VS40 ORD-LHR Virgin A-go-go!

Sat Nov 12, 2011 4:13 am

Virgin Atlantic Airways
VS040 Economy Class Service
Chicago O’Hare International (ORD) to London Heathrow (LHR)
Estimated Take-off: 6:00pm (local time)
Actual Take-off: 7:25pm (local time)

The flight started out on a pretty dry note with once again, terrible ground services on VS’ part. We were in line for the bag drop and were called by an ‘Upper Class’ ground staffer. I pity those who were in Upper Class and were dealt with by her. She started off with, “Passports.” then a few minutes later, “Bags on the scale.” followed by our boarding passes being slapped onto the desk, I asked, “Could we get our boarding passes for our LHR-AMM bmi flight?” she responded with not even a look, “No.” The ads tell us, “You’re airline’s either got it or it hasn’t.” She clearly doesn’t “have it!”

My Mom and I sat down in O’Hare’s pathetic T5 food thingie. Honestly, Terminal 5 is in dire need of some better offerings, but TSA takes up a huge chunk of real estate so I’m not going to complain. There was never a call for VS40, but we went through security at about 5:10 and were at M15 at 5:20. Boarding began at 5:35 with “Upper Class and Premium Economy passengers” then progressed to “Those with small children.” followed by row numbers. Pretty organized, can’t complain.

Once our row was called, we got in a seemingly five minute line and boarded, Crew were very friendly upon boarding and were actually smiling naturally! That’s new for cabin crew! We trotted our hand luggage down the aisle and shoved it into the overhead lockers. We took our seats, and I immediately noticed that my bottom seat cushion was not positioned right, it was pushed way forward to the point where there is a visible gap between the seat back and the seat cushion. Annoying, and impeding on already restricted legroom.

The flight was mostly uneventful past this point.

Virgin Winglet, SWISS, Royal Jordanian, SAS and a BA 777-300ER hiding.

Someone please tell me I’m not alone in thinking this video is pointless...

My remote had seen better days.

My Mom’s had the up and down toggles broken, but she just slept through the flight anyways.

Can you see the excitement for our 14 hour layover?!

The entertainment box didn’t really bother me much.

As pushback began, the BA 777 revealed itself.

At this time, our captain announced that we’re being delayed due to removal of luggage of some guy that decided not to board. Same story EVERY TIME! But, they were consistant and went around and asked if anyone wanted water during the delay. Alas, we pushed back at 7:00 and we’re flying by 7:25.

Had to use the loo.

VS recomends closing the lid and then flushing, [to avoid loosing hearing].

Hooray for vanity shots!

When I got back to my seat, V:Port was all ready and waiting for me.

I decided to catch Big Momma, as I hadn’t seen it yet.

Shortly after all of this, the captain interupted us and told us to get strapped in, as there was some rough air ahead.

It cleared out pretty quickly, so the cabin crew came around with meal services. I went with Salmon and Pasta. It was extremely tasty, and was the best food I’ve had in economy ever! Thanks Gate Gourmet!!!

Peas are just gross, leave that out next time.

Crew dimmed the lights and basically forced everyone to sleep.

Virgin was feeding my guilty pleasure!!!

Listening to Katy Perry while watching the map.

So close, but so far...

I decided to watch Green Hornet, which was ‘meh’ at best.

Cruising through the sky at 32,000ft.

My video cut to the landing video which came on REALLY LOUD!!!

Sun was shinning directly at us.

Plane was noticeably old.

Captain announced we would be on the ground in a few minutes, and whattya know, we were on the ground in a jiffy!

Qantas’ big bird.

Show some VS A343 love!

American 767. What can I say? “meh”

We parked by an A343 being prepped.

Snapshot of the forward mini-cabin while disembarking.

Spotted a new paint 744!

Air Canada 767. More “meh.”

I see you Cathay 744!

And another 744 with new paint!!!

I didn’t come to Heathrow for American planes, let’s get something I can’t see at ORD!

BA has a lot more 744’s than I thought!

My bed for the next 6 hours.

Rise and shine to some beautiful birds.

It’s not your imagination, there is a random white line though the “I” and the UNITED lettering is not straight.

While I’m not always fond of Eurowhite, SWISS pulls is off well.

This beauty just needed another picture!!!!

Some VERY heavy South African metal!!!

I think the Emirates livery is quite possibly my least favorite of any airline. It’s just.. not love.

My Mom really fell in love with this livery. I admit, I like that sun on the tail!

MORE SWISS!!!!
The Austrian livery sort of screams, “let’s settle down and get serious.”

South African A330

Thank you for sitting through this long TR! It was a pleasure delivering it!

Great TR. At least you seemed to have a decent experience with VS, I have heard it has been falling over the years. WIll have to agree with you on ORD T5, it is strange how there is pretty much nothing past security.

The "checked baggage but decided not to board" issue happened to me once before. I was flying SK from Washington to Copenhagen, and the flight got delayed 2 hours. It was a total pain.

5* luxury that is... Was this in Terminal 1 or 3? Did you not see if you could pay to use one of the lounges?

Quoting liftsifter (Thread starter):

I despise the livery, the airline and eugh, a) bad experience with EK, b) the way they treat their staff (especially the indian ground staff), like most arab countries to be honest (from my experience with Saudi Arabia). SV, it's all part of the countries attitude towards cheap migrant labour, with EK, a "world class airline", I'd expect better... however (this has turned into a little EK rant!)

Great trip report, shame about your mum's broken IFE... VS will be next to go up sh*t creek without a paddle right after BD... haha

I believe that's T1. It was a deserted gate for the entire day, so It was nice to be able to spot around and watch so many aircraft go and come.

Quoting planejamie (Reply 4):

The Servisair lounge said that they would not let us in until three hours before our flight, which at that point, I felt would be almost useless.

Quoting planejamie (Reply 4):

You can say that again! VS needs to improve their ground service and their night-flight service. I had two service requests unattended to, and they never even brought me my breakfast!

Those Y seats were only installed on Virgin's most recent 346s so your plane was at most, 5 years old. And a few scuff marks are hardly a sign of an old plane! Didn't realise that VS were using the 346 to ORD though.

nice TR. Certainly has a different twist than we're accustomed to.

Did you take the pics with a cell phone? Or, did you just resize them for bandwidth sake?

I can tell you from personal experience that it does take quite some to find that idiots bag. It is NEVER the first one you grab. Many times we'd have to unload a PK 772 with 900 something bags to take ONE tiny little bag off.... Trust me. an hour is a pretty good turn around time! lol

I grabbed my report from another site which forces you to use this low resolution. If any photo interests you, just ask for it, and I'll get a high-res photo.

Hi!

Many thanks for the trip report. Looks like you had a not too bad flight although not getting any breakfast would be quite a downer for me. I was in OHare terminal 5 a couple of years ago and there is nothing to do there I agree. The domestic terminals were much nicer airside from my experience.

Many thanks.

And to lessen the noise of the poor people that have to sit near the loos. You'd be surprised how much quieter it is when the lid is shut.

Thank god! I'd rather they dim the lights on a night flight so I can sleep than leave them turned up all night! Very common on all carriers for night flights.

Come on... were you sleeping? lol The only time Ive missed breaky was when I was snoozing... but managed to catch them on the way back down the aisle lol

Nope. The choice was fruit salad, or tuna sandwich. I asked for a fruit salad and the FA said he had none on the trolley and would be back with one in "just a moment!" It was terrible when he came around for seat belt check upon landing and just said, "Got your belt on there, yeah?" I responded with, "Yeah, nice and tight."

Sorry for the little tangent there.

Would it not have been better to fly on Royal Jordanian direct? Seems a hassle.

VS are known for tight legroom. How come you missed the breakfast? Would never happen to me.

Np problem checking your baggage VS to BMI?

I always prefer to fly RJ, not just for the leg room, but because of the direct fare. In this case it was $2300 for an RJ fare and $1250 for a VS/BD fare, so value prevailed over convenience.

The choice for breakfast was fruit salad, or tuna sandwich. I asked for a fruit salad and the FA said he had none on the trolley and would be back with one in "just a moment!" He never returned.

The BD gal that checked us in assured us that our bags were transferred to the BD flight, and we were all set with our bulkhead seats. But indeed they were not. Since BD has quite a few daily flights to Amman in the summer, our luggage was delivered to our front door two hours out of Amman which was quite a nicety for us. In the past, RJ forgot our luggage at ORD and we had to wait until the next day to come back to AMM to pick it up.

Overall a nice flight though.

I just love the service, I'm almost embarrassed by some of the offerings given by VS at the moment. Even more surprised you liked the food. They have been slated for their catering recently and have had to invest loads to try and turn things around.

Were the ORD staff VS employees do you know? Being a seasonal route I wasn't sure if they kept people on all year round at the airport?

A weird breakfast; fruit salad or tuna fish. They have an average reputation but the entertainment is supposed to be their forte.

They appeared to be VS employees, all speaking British English with VS uniforms on, although I know that RJ used SwissPort for a while but the vast majority were Arabic speaking and wore RJ uniforms.

I enjoyed the meals I had on VS, on the outbound, Salmon Pasta with Parmesan cheese. On the inbound, Macaroni and Cheese with a nice kick in it. Food didn't look very appealing, but tasted great! V:Port had an amazing collection, especially the 'Virgin Loves' selection. But was really slow, and my system was reset at least three times on the inbound.

Thanks for all the great feedback!

Thats even more bizarre, I can't imagine they send out ground staff from London to work at ORD. The supervisor might have been British but thats strange.

Also surprised VS can't through-check you on to RJ, if they genuinely can't then VS are very 'behind the times'!

Nice cute trip report!
I don't see a lot of Virgin Atl. A340-600 report on airliners.net but well, here we go.

I noticed that most crew serviced on US routes are rougher than average.
I think it's industry standard on particular routes.
Because after dealing with demanding, complaining, sueing customers for quite some times, they lose all the service mind and become more aggressive....for the self protection sake? Don't you agree? lol
Even on my Asiana flight in-out of SFO, crew are noticeably rougher and tougher above than airlines' standard.

Always love ORD, T1 is ofcourse the nicest one!

VS food offering is too cute too small lol
The handset is pretty thick to my opinion.

Many thanks once again!!
Let's just blame it on yields.
