To LGW Via FRA + Spotting At FRA

Tue May 01, 2012 7:15 pm

Hello everyone and welcome to my 7th trip report,

Knowing that the viewing terrace at FRA was open again I wanted to plan a little spotting trip. It was either the train or flying and being an aviation enthusiast I of course chose for flying. As I booked AMS-FRA-AMS with LH, leaving with the first flight in the morning and coming back with the last flight the next day it gave me 2 nice full days of spotting at FRA. But spending the night at FRA was a little too “boring” for me, I looked for some other options to fly too and spend the night at. I saw a good fare RT to LGW leaving FRA late in the afternoon and flying back to FRA the next morning. Perfect for me as it still gave me 2 good days of spotting in FRA. Upon looking for an hotel I chose for the Marriott hotel which is in walking distance from the South terminal at LGW from which I will be arriving and departing. AMS-FRA-AMS will be operated with an A321 this time. FRA-LGW with an A319 and LGW-FRA with the good old B737. The map for this trip thanks to www.gcmap.com:

07:05 – 08:15

An early flight means an early wake up call. My dad was once again kind enough to drop me off at AMS. Woke up at 05:15 and after a nice shower, a little breakfast and 20mins of driving I arrived at Schiphol airport at 06:00, 1 hour prior to my departure time. I had already checked in online the night before so all I had to do was print my BPs and drop my bag off. So off I went to check-in area 8. Printed my BPs, and dropped my bag off within 10 mins. Now it was off to security. Security wasn’t that busy so I was through in another 10 mins. I then proceeded straight to my gate: B17:

My aircraft for this leg: D-AIRW:

Boarding started at 06:35 and I was of course one of the last to board:

Upon entering the plane I was kindly greeted by 2 female FAs and proceeded to my seat: 23A. Flight was around 80% full with the 2 seats next to me occupied. The view from my seat, quite a rainy morning at AMS today:

A kind welcome from the cockpit and with an announced flying time of 45mins we pushed back 5 mins late at 07:05:

It was a short taxi to runway 24, also known as the “Kaagbaan”:

Once at the runway it was our turn right away. Lining up:

I bid the crew farewell and deplaned. I entered T1, with the viewing terrace being in T2 that meant taking the Sky Line:
http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/055-3.jpg

Spent a couple of hours spotting inside at the food plaza as the viewing terrace wasn’t open until 10 o’clock and it was still raining outside. Once the weather started to clear up a bit I proceeded towards the viewing terrace. Paid the 5 euro entrance fee and went through the security checkpoint. Here are some pictures of my nice spotting session:

RE: To LGW Via FRA + Spotting At FRA

Tue May 01, 2012 7:17 pm

It was my turn right away, so I was through within 5 mins and headed towards the baggage claim:
http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/141-3.jpg

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/142-3.jpg

I got my bag, which was one of the first on the belt, passed through customs and proceeded towards the arrivals area. I then followed the signs to my hotel which meant taking this walkway:
http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/143-3.jpg

Outside upstairs South Terminal:
http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/144-3.jpg

It was a 10 minute walk to my hotel, following these signs:
http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/145-3.jpg

I’m glad they showed this every time I crossed the street as I had to get used to it:

My hotel:
http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/147-3.jpg

I checked in at the reception desk and got the key to my room no. 313 which was on the 3rd floor:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/150-3.jpg

I watched a movie in my room before going downstairs and having dinner at the restaurant. After having a nice meal I went back upstairs to my room where I watched another movie and fell asleep. 7.5 hours later my alarm went off and I took a nice and long shower. Checked out at the reception desk and after 10 mins of walking I arrived at the South Terminal, this time downstairs:
http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/152-3.jpg

Got the elevator to go up one level and proceeded through this walkway before arriving at the check-in area:
http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/153-3.jpg

Having done check-in online the night before at my hotel I proceeded to the desk to get my BPs printed and drop my bag off. After 15 mins I headed upstairs to go through security. Security wasn’t that busy and I was through in 10 mins. Took a short walk and have now arrived at the “waiting area”:

As the weather was getting worse, with storms surrounding FRA I decided to go airside and continue with my spotting session. So took the Sky Line back to T1 and went straight through security which took about 15 mins. Got a bottle of Sprite and walked all the way to the end of the A gates where you get a very nice view of all the action with planes taking off from 25C, taxiing close in front of you and all the aircraft that landed on 25R also taxiing by. Once arriving this KE A380 had just landed:

It was now time to head over to my gate B2, which is quite a walk from where I was. Gate B2 was another part of FRA where I haven’t been too. Once arriving at the B gates you take an escalator upstairs and there you have a whole bunch of B gates close to each other. Boarding commenced almost exactly at the time I arrived:
http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/251-1.jpg

I was one of the last to board. Walked down a whole flight of stairs and took a seat in the bus that will bring us to the aircraft. Once arriving at the aircraft I got this nice under the wing view:
http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/252-1.jpg

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/253-1.jpg

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/254-1.jpg

Once entering the aircraft I was greeted by a female FA and took my seat which was in the last row. The view from my seat:
http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/255-1.jpg

Not going to bore you too much with this flight, it was the usual LH flight. Had the seat next to me empty with the aisle occupied. Load was 80%. Flight crew consisted of 1 male purser, 1 male and 2 female FAs. Snack was the same as on the FRA-LGW sector. We took off from 25C and landed on the Polderbaan which meant a long taxi. Arrival gate was B15 and we parked next to this VY A320:
http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/257-1.jpg

I quickly retrieved my bag and took the train back home.
Once again the usual nice flights with Lufthansa. Had a nice time spotting at the viewing terrace in FRA. Marriott hotel was a nice place to stay at LGW. All in all a nice weekend away!

This will conclude the TR. I hope you guys enjoyed it as I sure enjoyed writing it. Comments/suggestions/questions are very welcome and much appreciated.

Cheers,

I flew on the LH897 myself recently - your trip seems like a carbon copy of mine!!

LGW-FRA-BRU-LHR With LH And SN (by jwhite9185 Mar 27 2012 in Trip Reports)

Interesting that they use the A319 on the LGW route too now. Thought it was a 737 on both flights.

That´s for sure the perfect idea to spend two days at the FRA terrace, nice pictures btw. and split it up with a night at LGW. Don´t tell it to the non aviation interested!.

Hey Brendan,
Nice report and Im glad the weather cleared up for the terrace. I love that place

I was wondering why the Courtyard by Marriott was familar , I stayed there once . A very nice hotel IMHO .

Nice photo of the B787 , I still have yet to see it in real life .

Thanks for the nice read.

Nice report and nice to see photos from my local. LGW's had a ton of work done to it in the past couple of years and it's looking massively better than it did in the BAA days. I fly out of LGW almost daily but never go into the terminal.

Just wondering what you thought of it as someone who isn't based in the UK?

Thanks for posting!

Hi Brendan,

nice report with great spotting pictures from FRA. It's always worth it to spend a few hours there. Btw - I also flew on D-ABIO (STR-FRA) and D-AILT (CGN-MUC).

Spent a couple of hours spotting inside at the food plaza as the viewing terrace wasn’t open until 10 o’clock and it was still raining outside.

Hoi Brendan, nice report!

Seems like you had some good two days of spotting in Frankfurt. Having just been to MUC, I must say that I still prefer FRA over it mainly due to the more interesting traffic, and of course the fact that the spotting terrace isn't shielded in glass.

Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter):
It was either the train or flying and being an aviation enthusiast I of course chose for flying.

Hehe, well I guess with DB and their outrageous fares you'd better fly anyway since it's cheaper
Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter):
An early flight means an early wake up call. My dad was once again kind enough to drop me off at AMS. Woke up at 05:15 and after a nice shower, a little breakfast and 20mins of driving I arrived at Schiphol airport at 06:00, 1 hour prior to my departure time.

Ah how convenient! I wish I could've lived that close to the airport. Nice of your dad to drive you, but I guess there are busses to Schipol also?

Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter):
Paid the 5 euro entrance fee and went through the security checkpoint.

Hmm €5 is a bit steep I'd say, at least considering the fact that MUC only charge €1, but then again it might be worth the money if you plan on spending a few hours there. Good to know that the weather didn't stop you
Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter):
I checked in at the reception desk and got the key to my room no. 313 which was on the 3rd floor:

Room looks really nice, how much did you pay for the night? Also were the movies free, or did they charge for them as well?

Yes, there is also a bus service and a 5 min train ride from a station just 10 min walk from my house, so nice and close

I just love how you guys in Europe can just pack up and decide trips like this...Fly from Amsterdam to do some spotting in Frankfurt and spend the night in London, say what!! Glad you had a good spotting trip at FRA!! I wonder what happened to make that SQ flight do tech. Booking flights on these A380s makes one wonder of unnecessary delays.

Hello Brendan

Thanks for sharing your great TR!!! Was very interesting to read!!!

Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter):
AMS-FRA-AMS will be operated with an A321 this time.
Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter):
Flight was around 80% full

- This would be enough for a A320!! Quite a big aircraft for the "short" flight/distance!!!

Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter):
And touchdown into rainy FRA!:

- Thought that would be a rainy day for the spotting in FRA... but lucky the weather turned out much better!!!! Very much like your photos and the huge selection of airlines (we not get in ZRH or anymore). Maybe mistaken but you like sitting over the wing on your flights?
Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter):
The “famous” bridge here at LGW:

- Show's me that haven't been to LGW for ages!!!! That really looks fantastic and special. I'm sure that gives one a super view and not only for spotting up there if pax are allowed!!!

- Also the Marriott Hotel looks very nice... and sure relaxed for more flights and super spotting!!!!

Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter):
XQ // 737 // TC-SUZ, the highlight of this spotting trip, finally caught it, nice livery!:

- That is really a nice one... I managed to get it as was going with my girlfriend on SU in ZRH ( - SVO - LED) last Christmas!!!

What is your next trip?? Anything in planning now??

Thanks for sharing!!!

Cheers
