Hello everyone,

I have decided to try something different this time by doing a video trip report (thanks to some of the folks here for the inspiration).

Flight: DL2014

Origin – Destination: Minneapolis (MSP) – Atlanta (ATL)

Delta’s last scheduled DC-9 flight
Last scheduled DC-9 flight by a major carrier

Aircraft: McDonnell Douglas DC-9-51

Registration: N773NC (Ship 9864), built in 1978

Originally delivered to North Central, which became Republic, Northwest, and Delta.

So really, this aircraft stayed with the same airline!

Scheduled: 4:20 pm – 7:46 pm

Actual: 4:19 pm – 7:46 pm

Takeoff – Landing: 4:27 pm (MSP 30R) - 7:32 pm (ATL 26R)

Flight Time: 2 hours 4 min

Flightaware flight track.

See my video trip report here, including takeoff and climb out shot with a borrowed GoPro taken by a friend who was seated at the engine view window.

Highlights

Balloon arch, cake, Delta DC-9 trading cards, and banner to sign.

Appropriately, taking off into the sunset.

Champagne toast.

Pilots receiving commemorative photos after the flight.

Collection of souvenirs from the flight (we all got to keep our safety cards).

As it turned out, Delta kept the DC-9 on for a bit longer as a spare aircraft. Even though we were not on the absolute last DC-9 flight, at least we got all the pomp and ceremony of a last flight!

Good trip report! The DC-9 has been my favorite aircraft to fly on and its too bad that they're finally gone. At least I managed to get on several flights over the past few years.

Yeah it definitely would've been cooler if they actually retired them all after that flight. Did they actually not have any other aircraft types sitting around that could have been used as spares instead?

Actually, you flew on DL1965. I am not aware of other fans that flew that flight, so you have to do one for that!

Great report Ben! A far cry from (but still similar to) covering the final space shuttle launch, huh?
