A Nice Trip With Swiss (RJ100 & A320 Sharklets)

Tue Jan 21, 2014 4:19 pm

Hi everyone, and welcome to another report and, apparently, my 2000th post.

This time, I decided to go to France and Monaco, on yet another weekend trip. The nice way to get there was to sample Swiss' Avro RJ-100 before they get retired. Coming back, even an A320 would be. Turns out, if wasn't a simple A320, which was much appreciated...

Cannes, Nice and Monaco are nicely grouped together and NCE well served by Swiss and EasyJet from Geneva, so it wasn't all that expensive, even bought late for my standards.

24AUG13
LX526, GVA-NCE
Avro RJ-100, HB-IXX
ST: 12:15-13:20
AT: some 30' late departing due to storms at GVA
Seat: 09A (was given the windowless 07A by Swiss, but I switched)

25AUG13
LX529, NCE-GVA
A320-200, HB-JLT (winglets)
ST: 19:15-20:15
AT: a bit late due to late arrival domino effect
Seat: 31F

Later on, my colleague, J, decided to join me on the trip.

I booked a twin room in Cannes for 70 Euros per night. Cheaper than in Nice or (god forbid) Monaco.

Luckily, it turned out that Cannes would see an artistic firework show that evening.

Anyway on to the trip. We met at the tram station Servette and went to the airport. I forget if I got a new boarding pass or used the one I printed out at work the day before. This time security wasn't too bad (since it was the French sector) so we went through, and waited upstairs. The weather was turning bad and as we were about to board the bus, it started pouring heavily. Boarding was delayed until the rain let off. Some minutes later it did, so we started boarding.

A few minutes later, we reached the Avro and boarded. I took my seat 07A and noticed the huge space between seat and window. Missed opportunity, IMO. They could've made the aisle a bit larger instead. We were given a welcome chocolate.

We had to wait a bit longer as a queue had formed thanks to the ground stop at GVA. Not long after, we headed to the runway and awaited our turn to take off. We headed off to the South, lessening our delay somewhat. Service on board was a choice of drink, as far as I can remember. I was given a bottle of Henniez blue water upon “ordering” still water.

Lots of room between the seats and the cabin wall:

Take-off was smooth, and we soon disappeared into the clouds. I was hoping to see some Alps on this side, but for a while this was prevented by the weather.

The Avro looks nice, typical of the Swiss. Unlike Swiss trains (I still haven't had a single delay), LX greeted me with a delay (not their fault, of course; weather always wins).

Not even 40 minutes later, the coast of Southern France appeared. After a few twists and turns, I spotted NCE to my left. We continued our descent and lined up with NCE's runway closest to land, 23R. A short taxi to the stand and it was time to deboard.

As you'd expect in France, it was hard to find signs for the city bus to central Nice. I bought tickets and then boarded the bus, which looked slightly ghetto-fied, with room for TV monitors, but without the actual monitors. It dropped us off in the center, and we first headed to the top of the hill, then proceeding in a clockwise fashion around it, before stopping to look at the 747 approaching overhead (mostly me). We ate, walked along the boardwalk, then to the train station, for our train to Cannes. The French ticket machines aren't all that customer-friendly to American cards (France often makes it impossible to buy something without a PIN and chip card) so I had to use the manned desk (huge queue). We'd've missed the train if J didn't run to the tracks to find out it's still there despite being a good 5 minutes past the scheduled departure time... Ah, not in Swiss-land anymore, eh?

Then we walked around, found the firework show fliers, found a good spot and watched the artistic show. Not bad, much better than a usual firework display.

The next day we continued exploring the city for a couple of hours, had a light breakfast and headed to Monaco. We had ~1 hr to spend in Nice station after missing the train I wanted to take. No big deal.

Arrived in Monaco, and I decide to follow the F1 circuit (duh...) towards the Casino, but proceeded further East than it reaches, to the Musee National de Monaco (IIRC). There, a security guard followed my colleague around almost the entire time. I wanted to see who he was following so we split up. The guard continued to follow J. I looked more Monegasque with long black trousers, maybe? Whereas he looked more like a tourist, in shorts? Who knows. Then, on to the Japanese Gardens, back to the hairpin turn on the circuit, and a stop at a restaurant at below Geneva prices! Then, onwards to the harbor and Monaco-Ville, before heading back to Nice to catch our flight that night.

Station closest to NCE (you can walk in about 15'):

We walked from Nice St. Augustin to the airport. It took roughly 20 minutes or so due to the awkward path. There didn't seem to be any check-in kiosks, so I had to wait for the check-in to open. Lots of Russians in the queue, with lots of bags. But I was among the first there, and among the first to be served. J used his iDevice for a boarding pass.

At NCE:

NCE terminal:

Through security, and on to spotting... a fair number of machines, including the 747 from the day before. Not bad. No problem in taking pictures, but I'm discreet (also, discrete). The Swiss flight into NCE had accumulated a delay so we had to wait a bit longer. But what do I see when LX pulls in? Some sharklets. Yeah, LX sent their newest machine to get me from Southern France. Cool; I've never been more excited to board an A320 in my life. J seemed not quite so excited.

NCE summer apron:

The UAE 747:

Uuuh... Thanks?

Something special, courtesy of Swiss:

Not bad looking:

The flight wasn't all that remarkable, except Russians worrying about their connection to DME. Luckily, it would be operated by the same aircraft, so not much to worry about, as they'd wait, and it would be a bit delayed, too. Some storms in the area on approaching GVA, and nice views of the Cote d'Azur and of les Alpes during the flight. Service? I got a 15-cl can of coke... Which is about all I can handle nowadays. I crave it sometimes, but then my teeth feel so very gross... Euch. Plus a chocolate (it's Swiss after all).

Arrival in GVA good; quick departure from the airport towards central Geneva.

What did I think?

NCE airport: a bit confusing, crowded... With interesting traffic, though. Decent.
LX: 2 delays, but I can't fault them for weather in GVA. Decent on board, but can only say so much about the service after 2 40 minute flights. Have more coming up this year.
Nice? Alright, nothing special.
Cannes was a nice little city.
I enjoyed Monaco, actually. Very clean, maintained... And not so boring when you see so many cars on the street worth 100,000s of Euros.

Cheers, and thanks for reading. Hope you've enjoyed... Comments always appreciated

Hi, A.,

for sure a nice set of pictures and an interesting story.
I like the Cannes/Nice/Monaco area too. Been there for several times.
Well timed, to say the least, with exactly this AC combination for me, too.
At least according to the booked schedule!.

Great report Alex

You certainly covered quite a bit of territory in the short time you were away.

Nice to see you got to sample the Avro. Sounds like they will be around for a bit yet - no idea (still) when the C-series are likely to be delivered to them. My first and only LX Avro was from ZRH-SOF which was an interesting flight, particularly as the approach into SOF was very scenic.

Great pics from Nice as well. I recognised many of the places you visited - it's a very photogenic city.

I was a little underwhelmed by Cannes but then again, I was only there for an afternoon.

Monaco was interesting too - a little surreal to see so much wealth concentrated in a tiny piece of land. Great pics of the Casino.

I love those sharklets on the A320 - Iike you, that's probably the only time I'd get excited about getting on an A320! I am still a sharklet virgin. No doubt they will become common place. Cool shot of the Alps and the fading light on your return.

Thanks again for this one. Palmjet

Hey Alex!

Nice (pun intended) report, as usual some pleasant flights on LX, and a sharklet A320 is a bonus! I once told Nils that we will someday actualle be surprised to get a normal wingfenced A320 lol.

Cool pictures of Nice and the area, I visited last easter and found it to be pleasant, although the Nice Ville looks more italian than french (and most of the restaurants being italian helped)

Monaco was also bizarre, I never felt so poor in my life lol! I even saw a yacht with a bloody helicopter on its roof! In the Monaco ville I found a place that made the most delicious crepes in the world.

Keep them coming!

Hi, Markus,

Thanks very much.

Yes, I remember your helicopter trip. I was telling J about it... Well, it would've been nice, maybe, but I don't like helicopters all that much.

But with sharklets, as well? And we all know the schedule can change

It's getting to be a habit. I'll move back to the States in late Summer or early Autumn, so I gotta fit many places in

I think the Avros will be around for a few more years, but I'm not sure when I'll be back in Switzerland (chances are that sometime in the next 5 years). Still haven't flown into SOF. I feel like a bad Romanian for never having gone to our friend widebodyroga's land.

It is photogenic, isn't it? Looks great in pictures (and not bad in real life, but better in pictures!)... The light plays a part too

Well, I guess if you expect glitzy Cannes you should go when it's really expensive

Monaco's cool. You don't have to be rich to enjoy Ferraris driving around. Thanks again!

Yeah, they'll become hated at some point in the future and the non-sharkletted ones a collector's item... Well, good luck getting a sharklet. I was very lucky. I think JLT was the only one featuring them at that point.

Thanks for your reply, Palmjet!

Hey Christian!

Yes, a Nice pun   A big bonus, as I had just found out my camera was dying... I felt like in the old days where you had one roll of film in your camera (I can take about 30 pics since when it indicates it's dying). I agree, they'll become hated soon.

Well, it's Nissart. The language is closer to Italian than French (or at least half-way). Very similar to the little Piemontese I've seen written...

Hmm, yes, yachts... The Rolls Royces of the sea. Crepes, huh? I didn't find any gelateria with real gelato, though. That disappointed me, being so close to Italy

Thanks for your comments, guys, much appreciated.

Hi Alex,

Thanks for this nice report (sorry, no pun intended) about your jaunt to the south of France. I love flying in or out of Nice, it's always good for some great views. Your pictures reflect that. I especially enjoyed the snaps of Monaco, never been there.

Interesting combo on LX and congrats on the sharklets, not been so lucky myself yet.

Alex!

Another good report, thanks for that. Isn’t it funny how now we all want to fly the ‘sharklet’ one? In many years to come we will be equally excited to fly a ‘non-sharkletted’ Airbus   Anyway, good for you that you have already flown on one. As for the Avro’s, I really like the Swiss examples, they’re well maintained and the seating is much better than on the SN ones.

Hi Alex,

another enjoyable report with nice pictures! What a great destination you chose. Swiss looks fine as usual. Congratulations on getting the newest A320 in the fleet. I got the newest A321 on a ZRH-GVA leg two weeks ago, found it quite nice, too.

Quoting dc9northwest (Thread starter):
The nice way to get there was to sample Swiss' Avro RJ-100 before they get retired.

They won't be retired anytime soon due to the CSeries delays.

Thanks for a very nice report with very nice pictures !

Glad that you finally went to my favorite part of Europe! There's so much to see and do and the weather is okay even when I used to visit in January.

Flights seem okay and nice that you got on the new LX 320.

Looking forward to your next report!

Hi Alex,

another enjoyable report with nice pictures! What a great destination you chose. Swiss looks fine as usual. Congratulations on getting the newest A320 in the fleet. I got the newest A321 on a ZRH-GVA leg two weeks ago, found it quite nice, too.

Hi PlaneHunter,

Thanks very much--yeah, it seems that the Cote d'Azur is a popular destination

Yeah, was nice seeing JLT pull up to the gate. I'm sure you felt the same way regarding the newest A321.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 9):
They won't be retired anytime soon due to the CSeries delays.

Wouldn't mind a C-series at some point in the future, either. But, for now, I'll take as many Avros as I can get
Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 9):
Nice, I flew NUE-ZRH on HB-IXX two weeks ago.

Nice to know. First time on that machine?

Hi Alex!

Thanks for a very nice report with very nice pictures !

Hi, L.,

Thanks for reading and commenting!

Quoting The777Man (Reply 10):
Glad that you finally went to my favorite part of Europe! There's so much to see and do and the weather is okay even when I used to visit in January.

Ah, the Cote d'Azur is your favorite part of Europe? I guess it's not bad... I had a negative view of France after seeing Paris, but Nice, Cannes and Lyon all seemed nice enough.

The mediterranean can often get rainy in the winter, that's an issue...

Quoting The777Man (Reply 10):
Flights seem okay and nice that you got on the new LX 320.

Looking forward to your next report!

Yeah, flights are good... Nothing special, like most flights nowadays

Thanks again!

Yes, Cote D'Azur is much more relaxed and better in most ways than Paris. I just love it there! I guess it's the mountain's close to the ocean which is something I really like. Similar to Southern California in that way.

France is my favorite country in Europe.

It does rain but the temperature is usually above 10C during the day.

Hi Alex,

Very nice report you made here with many lovely pictures, really enjoyed it
Looks like you had a very nice weekend away. SWISS look ok, despite the 2 delays. Getting the A320 with sharklets sure is a nice bonus. The interior of the AVRO still looks quite good despite its age.
All your pictures of Nice, Cannes & Monaco look great, well done

cheers,

Brendan

Hello Alex,
Thanks for sharing this tr to my new home town! Only about 10% of landings are on 22R but they are the most interesting as you approach along the coast passing Cap Ferrat, Mont Boron before turning to finals.
Yes, 747s from the ME are usually spotted during the summer season. Bahraini 747SP is a regular visitor.
Avros are still quite OK for short hops, specially those with 2+3 seating config if you are two travelling together, legroom also acceptable. When will Swiss get their new Cseries Bombardiers?

Hello Alex,

Nice report! A very familiar route for me as I have flown it twice as well. Decent service on LX on these short hops. Nice is such a lovey city; and good to also visit Monaco and Cannes. Great pictures! Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, it's very nice geographically. I think the Cote d'Azur is too touristy, at least in summer. I'd probably prefer to visit at another time, next time.

Can't say the same... mine's Norway. I like the cold and hate the heat. Mediterranean in Summer... I can't handle it.

I don't really like rain... But I do like snow.

Hi Saleya22R,

Thanks for reading. Yeah, that approach is quite cool!

I think they start deliveries in 2015, but I'm not sure. While I'm gonna wanna try the C-series, I prefer the Avro! Looks much less boring

Hey again Robert,

Thanks

Nice is perfectly fine. Doesn't have the "glamour" of Monaco and Cannes, but it's alright
