Lufthansa B747-8 Intercontinental First Class – Experience the Legend

Introduction

As many of you may know, from Feb 1, United is devaluing the miles by increasing the mileage level on redemption on partner airlines. Therefore, I took the opportunity to redeem my miles on something I haven’t flown but I always wanted to; Lufthansa B747-8I. After some searches, I was able to use my miles to fly between Beijing and Frankfurt (and onward to Dubai later on their B747-400) in First Class with just 65,000 miles!

Lufthansa is the only airline flying the latest generation of Jumbo Jet, B747-8I in the world so needless to say, I am very excited and looking forward to my flight. During the winter schedule, Lufthansa is using B747-8I flying to Beijing instead of the A380. I believe Lufthansa is one of the first Western European airlines to serve Beijing since China open its doors in the 1980s using B747-200. Flight number LH720/721 hasn’t been changed since!

To make it a little simple, I will let most of my pictures to speak for themselves. It won’t be a heavy trip report. I took most of my time enjoying the flight so the trip report won’t be very detail but I hope you can see my enjoyment!

However, I strongly encourage you to view the video as I have captured the motion of jetstream coming off the engines over a very cold Siberia (5:00)

Check in

Lufthansa and all of the Star Alliance airlines use Terminal 3 of Beijing Capital Int’l. Check in was swift, the agent were able to print out 2 boarding pass; 1 to Frankfurt and 1 to Dubai the next day.

Lufthansa use Air China lounges in Beijing. The lounge has nothing to write home about, it is awful. There were very little food and beverages available.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/LH748/6.JPG

Breakfast, lunch and dinner were served strictly in 3 time intervals, outside these intervals, you get nothing!

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/LH748/7.JPG

However, I manage to find some Dim Sum leftovers.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/LH748/8.JPG

After 1 hour in the lounge, it is time to walk to the gate and the excitement build up inside me!

The B747-8 await!

We pushed back on-time and took off from Northerly Runway 01 on a relatively clear day in Beijing. With several banks towards the NW directon, we crossed some mountain range near Beijing heading towards Inner Mongolia, then outer Mongolia and towards Siberia.

Followed by a gourmet lunch, I befriended with all of the flight attendant and the purser, we exchanged a lot of conversation of what China was in 1980s and now. They were all very friendly and did their best to serve their passengers. We took some souvenir photo together! Both ladies serving First Class has 26 and 28 years of experiences!

Back to First Class, other passengers retired to rest, however the crew was waiting me before turning the light down. They do care about their passenger! The divider provides good privacy.

Sweet Dream and very plush and soft duvet! I forgot to mention only in First Class the window blinds are electronic adjusted!

After 2 hours of rest, I woke up again and was offered some snack

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/LH748/51.JPG

About 1.5 hours before landing, a proper dinner is served! I was pleasantly surprised how much catering LH have on this 10 hour flight! Compare to BA First, they serve just afternoon tea!

Starter: Parma Ham, spicy beef and Salmon tartare.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/LH748/53.JPG

Without asking, the crew brought me both Chinese and Western choices. They know their F class passenger well  http://www.samchuiphotos.com/LH748/54.JPG

The window are raised for landing, a last look at the nose area! To be missed!

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/LH748/58.JPG

After landing, the captain invited me to visit the cockpit. Note the 2 large EFB on both side. The captain mentioned the MTOW is about 50 tons heavier than the B747-400. The B747-8 is also the world’s longest commercial aircraft!

D-ABYJ at gate, what a ride! The pleasure is all mine!

Conclusion

I enjoyed every minute of my flight and the sweet memory continues to last when I type this report. With my usual enthusiasm and positive attitude, the flight is flawless. Lufthansa is my favourite European airline because of they deliver a consistent level of professional service with elegance and sophistication. I have flown many flights with the Gulf carriers but flying European airlines in the front is a very, very nice change. I hope to fly more B747-8I in the future. Please stay tuned to my Lufthansa B747-400 new First Class experience from Frankfurt to Dubai.

Thanks for reading and watching

Hi Sam!

This was truly a pleasure to read today. Thank you!

Lufthansa provides an exquisite service here. I have only the fondest of memories flying with LH and this report remains quite positive in all aspects of cabin service. And all of this at such great value of only 65,000 miles!!! I thought I was lucky to find a one-way LAX-ICN-BKK in Prestige with KE for 80,000! haha!

Shame on Air China to offer such poor amenities in Peking in terms of a First Class lounge. But then again, one cannot truly expect to find consistency in the purest form within these alliances.

I am looking forward to reading a detailed experience in the First Class Terminal!

Bon Voyage,

Nice TR, as always and as expected, BUT...

In my opinion, the "new" First and Business Class cabins are a shame for the German flag carrier!

Quoting N178UA (Thread starter):
A pair of empty new Business class on main deck.

The worst design ever - sharing the foot rest (compartment) with some stranger is a joke, as well as the twisted seating position (especially for looking out of the windows).

Quoting N178UA (Thread starter):
Now back to First Class

Nothing special, no privacy at all.

I will always choose the old revamped First Class (with private bed) over this horrible new design...

Wow, what a flight in LH F! Food and cabin looks as excellent as usual, per Lufthansa. I'm blown away with how much catering they provided you with; amazed at the quantity!

Great photos and report, as usual, Sam!

Thanks for sharing,

Matthew

Sam fantastic report as always...with an opening photo taken by none other than you, right? I think the 747-8i is just so gorgeous when compared to even the magnificent B777-300ER. But for me the A340-600 will be the most graceful bird ha,ha

Looks like you had a very dedicated crew. Lufthansa really impressed me when I flew them for the first time. There was this (again older experienced FA) who was just so friendly....I have yet to experience KLM though.
LAX772LR - "Answer to goofy question:" in response to my question about the B737-MAX8 being grounded. 48 hours later all B737-MAX8 grounded worldwide. Go figure!!

A 5 stars trip report from you as usual.
I enjoy reading all your trip reports. Those high quality pictures brighten my day as always.

I didn't think of this routing to redeem my UA miles. Though I did redeem Phuket to Nadi, Fiji at 25,000 miles in Business class each way. This includes the Air New Zealand flight NRT-AKL Boeing 777-200ER.
This routing of yours is a real deal.

Do you know how difficult is it to redeem LH F LAX-FRA on either 748 or 380 using Asiana Airlines miles?

Anyway, thank you for your fantastic trip report.
Cheers,
Net-HKT
Let's just blame it on yields.

I believe that LH will release F class redemption seat about 2 weeks before departure. Not everyflight but to India, Asia is much easier than to US.

I think it is a step up in most of the cabin. Look at the current old J on B744 and most A340s, the new one is a mile better. I agree the 744 has the best F.

Air China lounge in PEK is disgraceful, especially that's their homebase, suppose to be a showcase to the world. Not even a proper bar and no champagne on offer (very little wine, almost a dry place)

Wow- that is even better than SQ first.

Kind of shame that their J class is so poor.

I will try to fly LH first next time.

Fantastic trip report!

I will never have to worry about First Class service because I never fly First Class! I can't afford it on my own income, and my company would never pay for it.

At any rate, I have flown LH 744 and 346 economy class. And I am traveling on Delta 744 in a few weeks.

Gives a good reason to board F @PEK without pre-meal/drink, and enjoy more the on-board service. Looking forward to it, got a GRU/FRA/HKG LH - KA HKG/PEK - PEK/FRA/BIO/FRA/GRU LH upcoming - apart from Z8/G3 flights.

I´ve been to the CA PEK + other CA lounge, it´s really a cry specially if compared with CX/KA @HKG Wing lounge.

Enjoy your TR's, keep up the nice work + photos
