Qantas | 767-300 | BNE-SYD | Economy: http://youtu.be/w-B1Q2iRg_I

Hello, and welcome to my fiftieth trip report already. Picking up pretty swiftly from the previous installment then:

Oz 2014 4: Oz Domestic, VA MEL-SYD-BNE 738/E190 (by jwhite9185 Jul 7 2014 in Trip Reports)

And the rest of the series so far:

Oz 2014 3: Heading Down Under With MH 737/A333 (by jwhite9185 Jun 26 2014 in Trip Reports)
Oz 2014 2: Qatar Business BCN-DOH-SIN A333/77W (by jwhite9185 Jun 10 2014 in Trip Reports)
Oz 2014 1: Positioning LGW-BCN With EasyJet (by jwhite9185 May 26 2014 in Trip Reports)

My journey down to Sydney would be taken on one of Qantas’ many flights between the two cities. Most were operated by the 737-800, however one was operated by the 747-400 and another operated by the 767-300. As much as I would have liked to add a 747 into this trip after missing out on my journey back to Asia (details to follow in part 6), the fact it departed at around 7am meant it would have been a slightly wasted trip to Brisbane. Luckily the 767 flight was at 7pm – perfect for a day in Brisbane before heading back down south.

Unusually, there was an option to pay in either GBP or AUD. As the rate offered wasn’t particularly great, I paid in AUD anyway…

Next up was selecting a seat.

Before being sent an E-Ticket.

And 24 hours before departure, an E-Boarding pass.

After flying in from Melbourne the previous evening, my time in Brisbane was limited. Just the one day in fact. As luck would have it, PalmJet was on an extended stay in his homeland from London, so he was able to show me around the main sights in Brisbane. We met in the downstairs lobby of my hotel before venturing out into the rain.

First stop was lunch.

Followed by a guided tour of the city.

.

.
Brisbane skyline. It would have looked much better against a blue backdrop…

Taking a walk along the South Bank.

Nepalese gift to Brisbane for the 1988 Expo

.
Interesting beach in the city.

At around 13:30 we both headed for the airport via the train, as the constant rain was getting a bit much.

.

Around twenty minutes later we arrived, and I headed over to the QF premium line, although due to an issue with a passenger in front, it took a while to be seen. As I was so early, I was offered a seat on an earlier flight, however as they were all due to be operated by 737's I declined the offer.

.

We then both headed through security. Due to the rules being pretty relaxed in Oz, PalmJet was also able to join me.

.

We wandered the terminal watching the movements for a good couple of hours.

.
A trio of widebodies in the QF section of the terminal

.

.

.
Wish I could have worked one of these into the schedule.

It was then over to see what was happening in the Virgin part of the terminal.

.

.

.

.

.

We then sat and looked out over the tarmac for a while watching the movements

After this, we headed for the lounge.

I'd suggested to PalmJet earlier in the day that he brought his BA card along and attempt to gain entry too - as I figured the worst that could happen was that they say no. Amazingly though, he was granted entry too - despite not even flying anywhere. Try doing that in a BA lounge…

We took a seat, grabbed a drink and a few sweets.

There was a decent selection of food in here. In fact, I’ve found every QF lounge I’ve been in to be pretty good.

.

After a good few hours chatting about everything aviation related, and a few things that weren't, PalmJet went on his way. Thanks for showing me around, and no doubt we will meet up again in London at some point!

I wandered the lounge, made a sandwich, had another of the very tasty white chocolate brownies and grabbed a drink.

.

.

.

.

.

I made my way down to gate 22, where VH-OGR was waiting patiently.

.

Boarding began pretty much on schedule at 18:35, passing a big container of headsets on the entrance to the jet bridge. I didn’t bother to pick any up though.

QF551
BNE-SYD
April 2014
Boeing 767-338 / VH-OGR
Seat: 43K / Economy
Scheduled: 18:55/20:30
Off Stand: 18:55
On Stand: 20:26

I made my way on board and I figured it would be a pretty quiet flight. I was right - pretty much every solo traveller had a spare seat next to them. In the rear section at least, I'd say there were only around 20 pax, making for a very comfortable flight.

.

.

.

There was a surprising IFE choice in the seat pocket.

.

The captain welcomed everybody, but didn't give a flying time - he only said we would arrive in SYD on schedule.

We pushed back almost bang on schedule, and made our way over to the active.

We took off into the rain at around 19:10. There was a brief view below before we were into some cloud.

Shortly after departure, the crew announced that dinner would be served shortly. Dinner?! On an hours domestic flight?? That's almost unheard of in this day in age! It was a pretty tasty chicken and ham mix with a pastry top, joined by rice and green beans. Eaten with metal cutlery too.

Once I'd finished eating, I took advantage of not having anybody behind me, and reclined fully. The recline was pretty generous. I also had a brief look at how the on board iPads worked.

.

.

.

.

Just a few moments later, descent started. After a few turns, we were on to finals. Unfortunately, I was on the wrong side for city views today. And I didn't think to move until the last minute.

We made pretty solid contact with the ground and rolled out into the wilderness. We turned around and headed back to the main terminal area, arriving in to stand around fifteen minutes later.

It was then a case of following the signs to the exit/baggage claim.

.

I didn't have to wait too long for my bag, despite it not having a priority tag. Or my lock having its cover.

I went over to baggage services to mention it but the guy didn't seem all that bothered and just told me to 'buy another'. Never mind then... I made my way down to the train station to head into the city.

.

Within around twenty minutes, I was at a rather familiar looking Museum station.

It was then a short walk to my hotel, the Radisson Suites.

.

The rest of the evening was spent at the local supermarket stocking up on supplies for my time in Sydney.

And that’s where this pretty brief report will end.

I must admit I was very impressed with Qantas. Mainly because it was like how flying was 15 years ago! Right from the check in agent offering me an earlier flight, despite being on a cheap fare, to allowing PalmJet entry to the lounge despite not being a customer of theirs on the day, to getting a full hot meal on such a short domestic route. Sure they had a little wobble with the lack of interest in my lock being broken on my bag but other than that, they were miles ahead of Virgin Australia I thought. And the ticket prices between the two on the sectors I took weren’t too much different either – I know which one I’ll be choosing next time!

Look out for part 6 in the series in the next week or two, following my journey back to Asia on board one of Virgin Atlantic’s A340-600’s.

Hi James,

Great Report,

I too had a meal on a domestic flight with QF, the crew were fantastic as well - how were they on this flight?

Look Forward to the next part,

Ben

Thanks for another great report. By chance I literally just booked a QF 763 flight SYD-MEL and I looks like I made a good choice!

Does anyone know at what times QF serve the hot meal? My flight is at 17:00.

Dude! did you like... went back to the 80s?? seriously that looked like a really relaxed and comfortable flight, add to that the retro style of the 767 cabin and it´s pretty much back to 1986... xcept the iPads of course.

Try that nowadays in Europe, no matter what time the flight is... it will almost certainly be packed full.

I think you might just miss out and get a snack. I'm pretty sure dinner is served between 6-8? Check on you itinerary though. It will tell you if you have dinner or a 'refreshment.'

I've had a few empty ones - including my flight up to MAN on Sunday morning - pretty much the whole row to myself.

Yeah, that was a dead give-away on my flight actually - it had dinner rather than snack listed.

Thanks for the trip report and pictures. I just spent four months studying at UQ in Brisbane and a lot of those pictures are very familiar - I can even see my apartment in one of them.   You were pretty unlucky to have dreary weather that day because in the time that I was there it was usually always nice.

Thanks for sharing this. It shows me what I'm missing out while my firm's currently policy is to fly VA (it was QF until not too long ago).

Quoting jwhite9185 (Thread starter):
And 24 hours before departure, an E-Boarding pass.

Did they update the gate on it? It peeves me that VA's passbook boarding passes do not have gate info.

Quoting jwhite9185 (Thread starter):
We then both headed through security. Due to the rules being pretty relaxed in Oz, PalmJet was also able to join me.

How come you got a paper bp? Did you ask for one? I know VA was giving them out for the ATR flights since you board on the ramp, but only until early June.

Quoting jwhite9185 (Thread starter):

Wow, that is nice. AFAIK VA is not offering anything near this, at least not on SYD-MEL (and definitely not on my commute, SYD-CBR).

Gonna have to convince the powers that be to go back to QF.

Cheers

So did Palmjet convince you that Brisbane was the greatest city in Australia?

What is it with Qantas and risoni? Apart from the time I cooked it at home I think I've only ever seen it served aboard Qantas flights. A way to bridge the gap between those for whom pasta is their chosen source of carbs and those who prefer rice?
Quoting MIAspotter (Reply 3):
Wonder what is that ¨Security Technology Installed¨ find my iPad?

I was under the impression that it was just the standard "find my iPad" functionality and that the chunky cover was an extra battery, but I could be wrong or confusing it with Jetstar.

Eaten with metal cutlery too.

Qantas have not used metal cutlery in economy on domestic flights since January 2002 (and Perth Cityflyer and international since August 2007). The cutlery pack pictured contains non-metal cutlery.

- And it looks pretty decent too.

The viewing from BNE looks great, spotters, like me, would love it!

QF gets a real bashing in Australia, pretty much like BA do here, but all of my QF experiences have found them to be a pretty decent outfit and I'd have no question on booking them over the local competition.

Cheers

James W,

Another good read and nice pics, tnx! How cool is it to meet an a.netter living in the same area as yourself at the other side of the globe. Certainly nice to have spent a day in Brisbane with palmjet. Also Qantas’ B763 looks well maintained inside and the Ipad IFE is certainly something different and appreciated, even for this shorter flight.

I dont think so.

No, theres a big difference between them - see the previous part for the MEL-SYD-BNE leg on VA.

What is it with Qantas and risoni? Apart from the time I cooked it at home I think I've only ever seen it served aboard Qantas flights. A way to bridge the gap between those for whom pasta is their chosen source of carbs and those who prefer rice?

Must admit I'd not had it before - or since.

Ditzyboy,

Quoting Ditzyboy (Reply 9):
Qantas have not used metal cutlery in economy on domestic flights since January 2002 (and Perth Cityflyer and international since August 2007). The cutlery pack pictured contains non-metal cutlery.

Could have sworn it was metal, but maybe my memory isn't too great.

Adam,

Another fantastic instalment on your trip.

Thanks,

Quoting ab486 (Reply 10):
QF look really impressive here and along with flying on the 767 makes for an pleasant journey.

Yeah it was a pretty decent hop.

Nice read and pictues, thanks for sharing.

Thanks, no problem

Quoting ba319-131 (Reply 11):
- Now that is impressive, I'd assume it would have been a flat no!

As did I, but if you don't ask you don't get.

Quoting ba319-131 (Reply 11):
- And it looks pretty decent too.

Yeah it was pretty good for Y food.

Quoting ba319-131 (Reply 11):
The viewing from BNE looks great, spotters, like me, would love it!

It was a pretty decent airport to watch the outside world - although the international terminal was a bit far away.

Quoting ba319-131 (Reply 11):
QF gets a real bashing in Australia, pretty much like BA do here, but all of my QF experiences have found them to be a pretty decent outfit and I'd have no question on booking them over the local competition.

As previously mentioned, I'd choose them over VA.

Nils,

How cool is it to meet an a.netter living in the same area as yourself at the other side of the globe

Yeah it did seem a little odd seeing him a million miles away, especially considering we just happened to bump into each other a month or so before that in a cold wet muddy field at LHR...

Quoting sultanils (Reply 12):
Certainly nice to have spent a day in Brisbane with palmjet.

Yeah, great to have a local tour guide.

Quoting sultanils (Reply 12):
Also Qantas’ B763 looks well maintained inside and the Ipad IFE is certainly something different and appreciated, even for this shorter flight.

It was a pretty clean and tidy ride.

Quoting sultanils (Reply 12):
50 already? Congrats, you seem to be on a roll.

I have another ten to come... seven of which are already finished.

Quoting sultanils (Reply 12):
Good to see that there are places in the world where such things are still possible.

Yeah, it saved a long wait all alone.

Quoting sultanils (Reply 12):
She doesn’t look like an ogre at all

Haha, well spotted.

Quoting sultanils (Reply 12):
Never seen this! Interesting concept.

Guess it saves a little time on the flight itself.

I was under the impression that it was just the standard "find my iPad" functionality and that the chunky cover was an extra battery

I think they also have a retail security device in the cover, so an alarm beeps if you take it through the aircraft door.

Hi James !

Thanks for another great report with great pictures !

Nice that you were able to meet up with Palmjet, always good to meet up with a fellow a.netter.

Flight seems very nice and nice go on the 763 even for that short flight. Nice to get a meal and good idea with the iPad!

Looking forward to more in this series !

Hello James,

Excellent report as always! Great pictures of Brisbane, BNE and the flight!
So Palmjet was able to go through security without flying? That's pretty cool!

Another brilliant trip report, thanks James! So far a good series, I look forward to the next installment.

From this trip report I'd gladly pick Qantas over Virgin, I have to be honest I've never been a fan of the Virgin brand.

Nice report James.

QF look quite decent . The meal indeed impressive for a shortish Domestic flight. Free headsets at the get too where others charge.

Glad you enjoyed the QF experience.

Thanks for the report - I saw the title "A Qantas widebody to Sydney" and thought "wow, when did they put a 744 on that route?". Then realised it was the boring old 763s that have been plying the route for many years.

But we forget how lucky we are here - heavy metal and overall good service on short domestic hops. To think the 763s will be replaced by A332s by the end of next year.

Glad you enjoyed!

They do (or at least did when I booked). The DFW-SYD service stops off there - and departs around 07:00.

Yeah, much better than my LHR-MAN flight the other week.

good to know - I had wondered what they would replace the 767's with on that flight - I figured it would revert to at 737.

Hi James,

and another good one! I logged QF 738, 763, 744 & A332 on domestic routes in 2006, really enjoyed that back then.

Quoting jwhite9185 (Thread starter):

Shortly after departure, the crew announced that dinner would be served shortly. Dinner?! On an hours domestic flight?? That's almost unheard of in this day in age! It was a pretty tasty chicken and ham mix with a pastry top, joined by rice and green beans. Eaten with metal cutlery too.

Great to see QF still offers decent catering on these flights!

They really do use quite a big portion of their fleet on domestics.

Hi James,

It has taken me a while to read your next part in this interesting series you made here. Another nice report, good idea to try a widebody on this very busy citypair. QF's service looks excellent here! I am always impressed by their domestic service when reading reports on it here, getting a hot meal on an 1 hour flight? Very nice! It makes you wonder why they are losing so much money..
Shame it was raining all day in Brisbane but nevertheless you made some nice pictures. Always good to meet up with an a.netter as well!

Quoting jwhite9185 (Thread starter):
We then both headed through security. Due to the rules being pretty relaxed in Oz, PalmJet was also able to join me.
Quoting jwhite9185 (Thread starter):

I'd suggested to PalmJet earlier in the day that he brought his BA card along and attempt to gain entry too - as I figured the worst that could happen was that they say no. Amazingly though, he was granted entry too - despite not even flying anywhere. Try doing that in a BA lounge…

Wow! That is very nice.. Good to see it is still possible in Australia!

Quoting jwhite9185 (Thread starter):
In the rear section at least, I'd say there were only around 20 pax, making for a very comfortable flight.

Makes you wonder why they are using a 767 here, but I'm pretty sure the cabin has been packed on previous flights as well.

Thanks for sharing!

cheers,

Brendan

With no seat mate, a good crew and tasty food, Its a shame it was only an hours flight!

Quoting adamspotter (Reply 26):

By serving hot meals on an hours flight and letting people who aren't flying into the lounge to eat all their cake maybe??!

Yeah, I'm sure they have it all worked out - although I'm led to believe that QF have now retired their 767 - or it will be leaving the fleet very shortly.
