Japan Airlines First Class B777-300/ER Tokyo Haneda – London Heathrow

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

BACKGROUND

JAL was once the largest airline by far in Asia-Pacific before its bankruptcy in 2011. JAL fleet boasts over 100 B747 in the 1990s and it is famous of various special livery adorned on their fleet. Growing up in the 90s era, the best memory of JAL is their “Tsuru” logo. I am rather glad they have gone back to the basics and used the “Tsuru” logo once again. JAL rarely promote outside of Japan to foreigners, this developed my curiosity. Have seen much ANA first class coverage but relatively fewer on JAL. I have wanted to fly the new JAL First Class for a long while. I would also like to compare JAL with the rest of competitors.

DEPARTURE

Prior to departure, Japan Airlines reservation agent informed me it will be a full flight with 7 out of 8 passenger in First Class. To my horror, all window seat were taken or blocked, I was allocated a center aisle seat, 2D. Nevertheless, the agent inserted a message to check in station to request a window seat for me.

I arrived at Tokyo Haneda Int’l terminal with only 15 minutes train ride from Kawasaki where I overnight and well rested.

The JAL check in is immaculately presented. There was no queue and I was greeted and given a boarding pass of 2A! (A much desired window seat). I was told only 4 passengers out of 8 today in First cabin. All formality was done in just 2 minutes! So polite, yet so efficient. Mistake free of course!

SAKURA LOUNGE

The check in agent escorts me to the fast track security queue, after security I turn left heading to the JAL Sakura Lounge.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/6.JPG

Unfortunately, the First Class lounge is under construction as only recently long haul flights started flying in and out of Haneda instead of Narita. A separate area was reserved for F passenger in the main lounge. I helped myself with some fantastic Japanese breakfast.

Lounge design was bright, airy and minimistic, very Japanese.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/8.JPG

My Japanese-Western breakfast with grill salmon, miso soup, bowl of Japanese rice and salad/sausage.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/9.JPG

Famous JAL Curry is on offer even in the morning.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/10.JPG

Apart from this self serve salad bar, there were also 2 choices of soup, omelette, various Japanese and Western style dishes. There were plentiful of food and drinks on offer.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/11.JPG

BOARDING

I left the lounge a little earlier to the gate.

As you can see from the FIDS screen, many international departures in mid morning.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/4.JPG

The boarding area is very neat and peaceful. No chaos at all.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/12.JPG

JA742J, B777-346/ER will take us to London Heathrow.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/13.JPG

Boarding is separated into 3 queues, First/Business, Premium Economy and Economy

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/14.JPG

2 Aerobridge is used for boarding, one for First Class and another one for the rest. I was first to board!

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/15.JPG

ONBOARD

The “W84” code version of JAL 77W have a total of 244 seats with following break down:

8 JAL Suites, 49 JAL Sky Suites, 40 JAL Sky Premium and 147 JAL Sky Wider

As you can see, it is focus on premium with only a small rear section for economy.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/15A.JPG

Compare the 77W seat map with their retired B744 served on London route. You can see the B744 configuration was even more business premium focused!

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/15B.JPG

I was taken directly to my seat 2A, all the window shade was kept down. (Similar to US) I raised them up as I always enjoy the view onboard.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/16.JPG

The first impression is very luxury feel, wide and spacious as it should be. It looks even better than their website. (https://www.jal.co.jp/en/inflight/inter/first/)

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/16B.JPG

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/16C.JPG

All 4 passengers occupied the window seat, leaving the middle pair empty (later on used for bed)

Simple and easy to understand design

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/18.JPG

A small screen console as TV remote.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/23.JPG

A Mimosa to start the flight for me!

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/17.JPG

JAL Amenity Kit, a Shiseido branded Men’s lotion and a nice JAL gift handkerchief is presented on the table.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/19.JPG

DEPARTURE

Boarding took just 20 minutes and we push back few minutes early. Everything’s done to perfection so far onboard JAL, as one would expect from the country of Japan. We taxied to runway 34R followed an ANA 77W bounds for Frankfurt.

An array of JAL Tsuru tail in Haneda.

IN-FLIGHT SERVICE

After reaching initial cruising altitude, I changed into my JAL pyjama and leisurely took a few more photos of the First Class cabin.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/26.JPG

My seat with Japanese cushion.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/27.JPG

Good privacy can be had in Semi-Open suite.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/28.JPG

Wide and minimistic.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/29.JPG

The usual range of magazine is offer, with a large range of duty free. I bought a Tiffany tie later.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/24.JPG

JAL have great wifi coverage onboard which support multiple devices. I used the wifi during the whole flight for US$18.80.Wifi provider is T mobile.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/25.JPG

Snack is offered before the meal service. It is worth to mention the Champagne Salon 2002 is magnificent, only available to JAL F passengers. It is noteworthy to mention Champagne house has been releasing Champagne only for years when the grapes are truly exceptional. The other champagne is Laurent Perrier Cuvee Rose “Alexandra” 2004

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/30.JPG

Not long, lunch is ready course by course. Here is a PDF copy of the menu.

Dining on JAL is a grand affair!

The purser seeing me undecided, offer me to try both cuisine (Japanese and Western!) An offer I cannot turn down!

It was very satisfying, not only the taste but the attention to details on Japanese meal is second to none. The day before I flew from Singapore to Tokyo with Singapore Airlines, their Japanese meal pale in comparison with JAL, yes, they’re not just good, they’re perfect

A BEAUTIFUL SLEEP

After the meal, the FA have turned down the seat next to me convert into a full 2m bed. A choice of hard or soft mattress was offered. To be precise, the mattress come with 2 sides, one side is soft and another side is hard. I opt for the soft side. Little did I know, I slept solidly for almost 7 hours after!

We’re in Europe already and past Moscow after my beauty sleep!

Cabin Tour

There is a small bar area near door 1, where an adorable display have been set up for First Class passenger.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/48.JPG

Business Class cabin with 2-3-2 stagger seating. JAL won the best Skytrax Business class seat. I have noticed JAL seat is notably wider than BA and Etihad 2-4-2 staggered. The screen is huge in Business.

Business Class Self Serve bar

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/50.JPG

Every toilet in the sky should have the feature as JAL does. Japanese electric operated bidet!

I manage to seize some opportunity to take photo with the very hard working crew. They actually encourage for photo, always keen to help to take photo of the passengers. Fiona is a lovely UK based crew joined JAL 13 years ago. Her Japanese has grown to nearly perfection.

PRE-ARRIVAL MEAL

There are plenty of food and choices. I order my pre-arrival meal from the menu below about 2 hours before landing. Little did I know later, I sampled the BEST meal ever on an aeroplane!

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/30B.JPG

Fumiko’s Japanese set plate: Wagyu Marble beef

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/58.JPG

The beef is so amazing it literally melts in your mouth. I have never tasted such tender and soft meat on an aeroplane before. I went to ask for a second serving and I give it 10 stars!

ARRIVAL

Prior to arrival, the cabin crew came around to thank me flying JAL and bow sincerely. I was in absolute awe. Everything on the flight was done to perfection and many little things surprised me.

During approach, I was fortunate to film a British Airways B777 flying across. Please see the video.
We landed on LHR’s Easterly runway 09R few minutes early. Vin Man, a ground agent took the photo of my plane arriving to stand in T3. A glorious arrival with absolutely beautiful weather in London.

COMMENTS

Thank you JAL. When you didn’t want to leave from a flight that says enough how great the flight was.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/65.JPG

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/JAL/66.JPG

JAL, like Japan is famous for its ultra efficiency, attention to details, polite and humbleness. This is the best First Class flight I have for a long while. I simply didn't want to leave! The amazing yet adorable JAL service "from the heart" won me over! You have to experience it to understand the Japanese understated luxury.

Oh Wow, great trip Sam.
JAL First Class looks and tastes awesome judging by you pictures. How on earth do you manage to eat so much food, they would have to carry me off the plane.

The YouTube report is also very polished, well done.

An excellent trip report with some excellent service. I'd love to know how JL first class compares with TG and CX. They really seemed to do an elaborate service on the meals.
Have the restrictions at HND been relaxed? If I remember, international departures and arrivals were limited to the hours of 2200-0700. When I flew AA HND-JFK-HND, it was a 6AM departure, with an 10:20PM arrival. It made getting to HND difficult for those early morning departures, and for the late evening arrivals, the trains stopped running at midnight.
I have tried to get cockpit visits on both JL and NH and they will not allow it at all. I asked if it would be ok, once we landed and were parked at the gate and they said no.
It looks like JL has really upgraded their premium service. Thank you for sharing your experiences on JL

LOL I never saw older JAL flight attendants before.

What a difference from my F flight on JAL in 1976.

It was not that great and I hated the Japanese option. Even the croissant in the morning was tasteless.

I think ANA is better????

Thanks for an amazing trip report! JAL has finally caught up with ANA, and the new cabin product is definitely impressive. The meals look so amazing and I am sure catering out from Tokyo just makes it even better.

triple7man... Haneda has recently opened up many day time slots mainly for additional Asian and European flights.

Many thanks and can't wait to read your trip report!

Wow, what a trip report, JL deserves recognition!

My friends can't understand why I'm willing to pay extra for direct flights to Tokyo with JL rather than connecting via AMS... The answer is simply service, which you have shown here.

Thanks for sharing.

Amazing TR! Sam never fails to deliver!
JL first and business certainly looks impressive, a rare mix of superior hard and soft product.
I certainly need to continue saving up those avios miles for a JL redemption, alas BA is more attainable especially with a 2-4-1 voucher.
Was in BA F to NRT and back last month, the food is nowhere near JL, however the seat and crew were very good, beyond my expectations, guess they werent particularly high after all the bashing it gets on FT.
I need to pull my finger out and write a TR !

Thank you for the comment. FYI, I burned off 70K AA miles on this flight. JAL release a good amount of award seat in First Class a few weeks before departure.

Hi Carfield, I think JAL service is WAYYYYY better than CX or SQ flight I recently took. It may have very well ahead of ANA as well. I always wonder why there are many unnatural biase towards ANA over JAL. Both have 77W and 787. Both fly pretty much same route structure, same timing. Judging from the amount of trip reports, ANA seems pretty common these days.

Sorry you had bad flight in 1976 before I was born. May be Pan AM or Northwest Orient was the choice of carrier across the Pacific.

No, I think JAL is better now!

JAL was super strict at cockpit access. I can't even send my log book via the FA to the captain. The FA filled out for me instead of the pilots.

Hi Sam,

Very nice trip report! it's always nice to read yours...

That's by far the best looking dishes for F Class! Honestly...

Just out of curiosity... since you kept your journey flight log... how many times you have flown up to this date? =p

What an amazing trip report! I love the video; you can clearly see the excellent service from the flight attendants. In the beginning where one is escorting the other F-class passenger to her seat, that simple bow, the small gestures, handing over a card (?) with both hands. Very refined and elegant. The food looks exquisite; so many attention to details! To be honest, I wasn't really a fan of this plain livery from JAL, but when you see all that JAL metal on HND, it somehow made sense to me, spotting all those cranes. They should never abandon the tsuru anymore!

Well I know I will be flamed....but I was not impressed by the meal services. Granted, it's a Japan based airline leaving Japan and really doesn't have to cater to western people. I personally don't like raw fish and all those little fou-fou dishes. I don't mean to say I prefer roast beef and mash either, but please, all those little child like portions that are cute and not filling. I remember flying JL F/C when the F/A's in first wore kamonas (SP?). Or at least one did. The caviar service? Really? There is a proper way to serve it and that wasn't it. JUST My opinion. The seats and other stuff looked looked ok, but really, a bidet?!!!!!

Hi Sam!!!

I love seeing the swan all around the world, so it is nice to read your excellent trip report with JAL!!!! Thank YOU!!!!

The catering looks absolutely exquisite! I am of Asian-descent so I was naturally quite fond of your photos and this trip report. Everything looks so delicious!!!!!!!

My last flight with JAL was many years ago as a teenager when I first flew JAL from Washington/Dulles to Tokyo in Business Class (I think it was called Seasons?) I remembered eating at least 4 or 5 of the "Udon de Sky" from the Economy Cabin. I was flying with my father to Japan and was very fortunate he treated me to a nice flight and with all the wonderful and lovely cabin crew as you experienced here, too!

Re: ANA versus JAL - I, too, have heard these comparisons being made all of the time as to which airline is "better." And with your trip report, it makes things harder as JAL has upped the ante quite clearly!

I would only add I prefer the cabin crew uniforms of ANA versus JAL.

Thank you again, Sam!!!

Bon Voyage,

AirAfreak

Definitely you're entitle for your opinion. I can completely understand where you're coming from. Given 95% of JAL current clientle is Japanese/Asian origin, they are doing the right thing to be different to the mainstream airline which will all serve you a steak. There are 3 Western main course options but I didn't opt for it, that's why you see those "little fou fou" dishes there   It was quite a hard decision for me to go with the authentic Japanese or western options.

A bidet is a MUST! In my opinion.

Hi Sam!

Thanks for an amazing report with amazing pictures !

Japan Airlines look really good here and very nice with the suite.

Food looks great but not better than CX or NH from other reports that I have seen.

Great to see that they have the crane logo back and the livery is simple but very classy!

Thanks again for the report !

Hi Sam,

Great report, and super video. Especially loved the shots of Tokyo as you climbed out of Haneda... you went over Odaiba, and I could see the beach where I used to take my kids when we lived in Tokyo. I stood on that same beach many a day, watching the birds climb out of Haneda. Nice to see it from their perspective! I also loved the hazy Asian skies... anyone who's spent time there in the summer knows the haze, puffy clouds and light blue sky. It brought back great memories.

Thanks again!

Thank you very much for an outstanding trip report of an outstanding flight. I am glad to see the Grand Old Lady being fully back in Business. I loved the cabin design - on a side note: I shall never understand why they alway put the shades down..ridiculous. Food ..oh my gosh. The presentation is absolutely the most stylish I have ever seen in the air...and it looked soooo delicious..excellent photos! GREAT REPORT!!!!

Thank you Homer3152, enjoyed many of your Youtube video especially with FA in action!

JAL have really nice style, and it is not one of those flashy and always mentioned carrier, they just quietly and humbly doing the right thing!

Looks like you had an excellent flight Sam! Super catering and staff, as well as a wonderful loking cabin. I love how even a technical (was it?) chart with expected turbulence and waypoint markers had smiley faces and cartoon moose on it! Good old Japan! I think this might be a good use of my BA Avios!
