Norway Tromso Snow Ice SAS Norwegian

Wed Aug 20, 2014 6:05 pm

This trip is dedicated to an Norwegian guy with Sami background, doing the right things at the right time!

The trip in one word:

EXPECTANT

"Sun, snow and lights up the north. Really?"

God dag, a good day, dear readers,
a new month, new travels.
This was the last February trip:

Greece AirSerbia JAT Athens Tess´niki Belgrade (by FLIEGER67 Aug 7 2014 in Trip Reports)

And the vids:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2tn32xTI3A

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0hkCgf3arY

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlNEC0DwoVw

I´am fascinated since a long time ago about a trip to the nordic countries during wintertime.
To explore the cold, the snow, the ice and maybe, just if I´am the lucky guy, the lights.
2014 and especially the late winter months seems like the actual statistics a good time to see some activities.
Let´s go, isn´t it?.

Thanx to once more:

Call it a lazy late morning departure.
Joining the office crowd to spend some more or less relaxed time on the motorway and
arrived at STR´s P0 well ontime.
Two nights to stay here for the car,
sure ok, so it seems, with these cute one right beside, like the last time!.
OLCI works well with, no SK, LH´s website for STR departures. Tripsta secured the ticket details, two legs on the confirmation and the fare per leg is 55.00 Euro´s.
There is just the paper to catch now from the SSK´s. It works!.
So, what´s going on at the screen?.
My plane should be here by now ready to leave the "Flughafen Stuttgart" again from gate 164

No time to wait during this time of the day at security, up for the lounge and soon thereafter down again for the bus gates.
Just to see this one

Leg no. 9 on type and new to the log.

The load is 100%, no open seat to spot at all also in biz.
Well, the ground staff looks somewhat helpless, there are much to much pieces of luggage for the tiny compartment here and finally we leave with a good number of bags not loaded still on the cart

This is LN-KKW, no individual name to notice, a 737-800 is on schedule,
not the classic 737-300 like it is.
Leg no. 57 on type, new to the log.
Call it an oldie, in the air since 07.12.1989 with Air Atlantis, TAP, Euro Atlantic Airways, BRA Transportes Aereos and finally Norwegian.
There are 9 planes on type still in the fleet and this is the oldest example.
Two stories are here:

6.00 pm with a weather related 15 minutes delay we leave the "Oslo Lufthavn" from the 2950 meters "One-Nine-Left". Snow, 2 negative degrees and 1.45 hours to fly.
OLCI works well 24 hours prior to departure but there is no seat change possible without extra payment. The fare is 90.00 Euro´s, booked directly via the companies website.
And yes, this is a Norwegian themed cabin.
The load is very close to 100%.
24C for me, the second to last row. The window is taken and the middle seat is open.

Ok, time to take a nap right now, one of these short examples!.

Here are the conclusions:
1.)Cimber Air STR-CPH: The calm service to start the trip.
2.)SAS CPH-OSL: Short and quiet up for Norway.
3.)Norwegian OSL-TOS: A sleepy
evening Norwegian style.

How far up the north should I go?:

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/NUE08/NORWAY032014187_zps36ea0211.jpg

Are the flights ok, also during this time of the year?:

Is there maybe also some sun to see above snow covered mountains?:

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/NUE08/NORWAY032014143_zps9e5c8ca5.jpg

And most important, great thanx to Trond, the right place at the right time, there is really a light to see.
And believe me it is not cold, no way, when you spend you´re evening at more than 20 negative degrees on a mountain top, thanx to Trond again, with a Sami tent to warm up from time to time:

Hola Markus!

Great report, nice to see some refreshing pictures during the summer.

Funny to see all those Spanish signs on a SK flight to CPH; it used be here the case on the opposite with JK MDs coming from SK, Danish signing for JK routes BCN-PMI   I guess that is the true European spirit...

Looking forward to seeing the second part, wonder how far north you went.

CRJ200 still in use with Air Nostrum; there's always one at BCN that covers the route BCN-LEN in the early morning.

Salut!

Hey Markus

Great report and just in time as I am planning a trip back to TOS sometime. I was there some years back in Winter and it was just amazing. Certainly a place you need to triple wrap though its bitter cold.

Anyway very much looking forward to the next part.

Markus, definitely a great idea to go up north and see the light, well, literally that is. I hear those flights to TOS are really expensive, therefore I’m glad to see you were able to snatch a bargain fare for this route - where is that irony out button when you need it   Also pretty cool to have those 2 exotic planes included - the Cimber and Norwegian one.

OY-RJL "Juan de Juanes", the CRJ-200 like on schedule.

Spanish, sure spanish fits perfectly to a danish registered plane on the way for Denmark!

Smells like an ex-Air Nostrum example?

a 737-800 is on schedule,
not the classic 737-300 like it is.

Thank you to Norwegian for this nice sub!

Hi Markus,

another fine report there! When it is summer in Europe and you read these reports from the winter time it doesn't look so bad and cold. It looks like Christmas time in a Hollywood movie. But I am getting off-Topic. ^^

Most important: great you managed to see the Northern Lights. I had the luck once in 6th grade, many, many years ago, at the coast of the North Sea in Bremerhaven.

Great you go the classic 73! Good to score another one, soon they'll be gone.

Great report as always! For some reason I always enjoy reading reports from Norway

You better catch those 733s from DY as they are heading out of the fleet after next summer(will not be used during the winterprogram and stored away at Lasham).

If any of you are reading this post and considering a trip up to TOS and beyond, then you should check out DY 2x weekly flights from LGW to TOS. The prices are normally in the range between £45 and £90 each way.

Looking forward to part two

Thankfully! My last 8 flights with DY have been on the 737-300s, and I'm yet to get on a -800 since they started offering inflight wifi!

Hello Markus,

Great report from snowy and cold Norway! You know I am jealous of this report - I was in northern Finland those some days hoping for the lights and got none; and you had them so greatly. Thanks for sharing, at least this way I feel like I sort of experienced it too!

Tromso in winter. Yes, a good idea, and no irony out button!

I haven't seen much snow this past winter... Maybe a trek to OSL would've solved that. Anyway, looks like a couple of pleasant enough flights, and DY an airline to try.

Thanks for the write-up, Markus!

Hi Markus,

So, finally a chance to catch up on some essential reading!

What a special report and I have a feeling the next part is going to be even more so. Amazing photos of OSL on the snow, most airports would grind to a halt in those conditions. Tromso by night must have also been a surreal experience, were you the only one out there?

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Two nights to stay here for the car,
sure ok, so it seems, with these cute one right beside, like the last time!.

Spring, oh it’s a long, long time until Spring

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Reply 2):
A very special announcement is to hear. There is one pax to much aboard. Please check the BP and press the button if there is something wrong

Someone got on the wrong plane?
