Hello everyone!

So yes, the order of my trip reports are all messed up, but sometimes, the inspiration just comes for one and not for the other so I thought it was better to just post up whatever I felt like posting first! Haha. This TR is a continuation of the first part of my journey, TR Anniversary: SIN-HAN-HKG On SQ/KA!. This time, we leave Hong Kong for Ho Chi Minh City for a couple of days of work, before returning home to Singapore.

Pre-flight

Our flight today was scheduled at a leisurely 4.20pm, so we got up late, had a yummy breakfast with legit milk tea (take that KA stewardess!) at Tsui Wah Eatery, checked out, and grabbed a taxi to the Central Station for in-town check in. The plan was to shop at IFC Mall for a couple of hours before heading to the airport.

Just outside the check-in area. You must buy a train ticket to check-in in town

We bought tickets from the counter, because they come cheaper when bought in threes or fours, as opposed to individual tickets from the machines. Then it was through the gantries to the Cathay Pacific counters!

Thanks to QR's entry into oneworld last year, my parents had garnered a small stash of miles on their AsiaMiles account when they flew to South America, earning double miles during the promotional period! So there was enough to put all three of us in Business Class

https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xap1/t1.0-9/10552528_10152644514609540_152516815707283251_n.jpg
CX gets several counters to itself, while some other airlines even share 1 counter!

I had done online check-in the day before, more to confirm that our aircraft had not been swapped at the last minute to something else, than to shorten our waiting time. At the counter, I re-confirmed the aircraft type once again. CX is famous for playing aircraft roulette with their regional routes!

"Yes Sir, your aircraft is still a 777-300ER," the check-in lady informed me.

She then proceeded to ask for proof of our SQ flight from SGN-SIN, as our CX flight HKG-SGN was booked as a one-way ticket, and I suppose they don't want you to enter the country without having made plans to leave it....???

She scribbled down our flight details, and when check-in was finally done, we went on about our plan - shopping!! Except that I was a good boy and wasn't spending much money this trip

Hey it's true    I know what you're thinking....

The IFC Mall

So after about an hour or so of aimless walking, I decided to bid adiós to my parents and head off to the airport myself for some exploration!

Heading to the trains

https://scontent-a-sin.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfp1/t1.0-9/10550818_10152644514649540_5964641827914995684_n.jpg
And on board!

These trains have the hardest seats that any commercial vehicle should have. Ridiculous! Before long, the doors closed and we were zipping towards Hong Kong International Airport!

https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpa1/t1.0-9/1458627_10152644514699540_5934048366263674678_n.jpg

I don't know why, but at one of the stops, a man carrying a baby decided to plonk himself down next to me despite there being quite a large number of empty seats around. So I had to contend with a pair of eyes staring at me for most of the journey like I was some sort of alien. Then he started to jump around, make lots of noise, and even drool. And that was not cool at all. But neither was it nice to excuse myself to another seat. So I sucked it up (not the drool) and stayed where I was.

https://scontent-a-sin.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xap1/v/t1.0-9/10403226_10152644514859540_9100411331412507419_n.jpg?oh=d825dd2a9a8c824393056f626262a99d&oe=545F6AB6
Willing the train to move faster...

Well eventually I arrived at HKIA. The baby was still making weird noises lol. I exited the train and proceeded into the terminal.

Taking the travelator

Looking down at Arrivals

To my best knowledge, I have never checked in at HKIA before. I'm always doing it in town, so as usual it was just a bypass of all the check-in counters straight towards immigration.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xfp1/v/t1.0-9/10384342_10152644515129540_5390988936379730232_n.jpg?oh=c09688eb561ac3b5d251da933a72f845&oe=54790BBA&__gda__=1415467743_e2f6d76487d2a021cd44f0d8baaa3eb9
Phew glad not to be checking in here anyway

Despite it being a random Sunday afternoon, the airport was very crowded, especially at the immigration lines!

https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xap1/t1.0-9/936655_10152644515359540_1862093930873795944_n.jpg

I chose the South Entrance today (which I normally do). I wonder if it's better or worse than the North entrance...?

The queue for security and immigration took me about half an hour in total. I miss my Changi efficiency    Could be worse though.

After making it through air-side, I realised that I had never been into a Cathay Pacific Lounge before. There were no obvious signs for the lounges either. From something I read briefly somewhere, I seemed to recall that there was a lounge at each gate area. So I set off towards Gate 15, my gate for the day.

I wanna try BA's long haul some day. It's been more than 15 years!

Wow is this a shopping mall or what?!

As I was walking I also used my phone to check out the CX lounges on their website. About 3/4 of the way to Gate 15 I was halted in my tracks when I realised that the lounge I was headed to was supposedly not the 'best' one around. So I turned right back around and headed to Gate 1, "The Wing" lounge.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpf1/t1.0-9/10561642_10152644515779540_6509275223819260680_n.jpg

I was welcomed into the lounge and my lounge invite taken away from me, then directed up the stairs.

Crowded day

I bypassed the main section of the lounge into a tiny corridor that led to the Noodle Bar. I was starving by this time. As I rounded the corner, I was shocked to find my parents happily seated at one of the tables already!

Like, how did they get here faster than I???

Oh yes, they have that APEC travel card that allows them to cut immigration queues

Didn't help when Dad said "Pokfur! You're slower than us???"

Ohhh shut it dad...

Miffed, I dumped my bag down and went to order some lunch.

I walked to the end of the bar where I could look down on the departures area.

My lunch!!

I had ordered Wanton Noodles, some fried gyozas, and a minced meat bun. All tasted not too bad. A satisfying lunch

Well after lunch, it's time for some coffee! So we picked up our stuff and headed next door to the Coffee Loft!

I ordered a cappuccino, and an ice cream for dessert

Looking down to the concourse

We spent some time there relaxing, finally leaving to head towards the gate about half an hour prior to departure time. I really quite like this lounge. Although it was quite crowded, it was large enough to accommodate everyone. The Noodle Bar and Coffee Loft aren't obvious to passengers though, and one might completely miss them unless one did some exploration.

A short walk later, we found ourselves at Gate 15, where boarding had yet to begin.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xfa1/v/t1.0-9/1012436_10152644517449540_7302447174321987633_n.jpg?oh=a7bbe8937c9c99f83a656a40636d0b1c&oe=545D15B0&__gda__=1416438331_9f08e0a1b235c57df49d51b9fdfdd396
But a queue had already formed...

Aha! B-KPU servicing our flight today

Eventually, boarding for our flight was announced, and this is where things started to get a bit ridiculous.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpa1/t1.0-9/10559726_10152644517954540_3147019291872028614_n.jpg
That's the Priority queue

Yes, indeed. The priority queue was longer than the Economy queue, so much so that we actually joined the wrong queue and only realised our mistake when the other queue started to board first. So we left the queue and decided to take a seat, waiting for most priority passengers to board first before doing so ourselves.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpf1/v/t1.0-9/10565081_10152644517914540_1115516909974294846_n.jpg?oh=6e2e83f35b6dd42236dd32fb836ac6ae&oe=5465B2E0&__gda__=1417082783_3480de7e2b93f87c07727d08e96b3893
Clearly a gate meant for SQ, with the "Suites" sign...

The Flight

Cathay Pacific
CX 765
SGN-HKG
Boeing 777-300ER
B-KPU
Seat: 18K
Schedule time: 1620 - 1755

Once our boarding passes were beeped, it was down the aerobridge, onto the aircraft, where we were welcomed on board. I made my way across to the right side of the aircraft, through the First Class section, where a skinny young girl sat ramrod straight in 1K looking like she didn't know what she was doing there, through the mini Business Class section, and into the main section after door 2.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xfa1/t1.0-9/10592677_10152644518079540_869142636529958810_n.jpg
Oooh. That looks comfy!

I was practically wriggling with excitement at finally having a taste of Cathay Pacific's long-haul business class. Having heard so much about how this seat is one of the best out there, I would finally get to try it out myself!

Well so here're a few first impressions of the seat..

https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpf1/v/t1.0-9/10303290_10152644518129540_8113186998686663450_n.jpg?oh=420c1e1b24596c650512354ba0f36414&oe=54878515&__gda__=1422959466_506d2602ccf210823cd99f99b9a96bbf
Certainly some good legroom there

https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpf1/v/t1.0-9/10491112_10152644518249540_2184067125000166185_n.jpg?oh=ee592fb17b74ae5b2717845e91e2123e&oe=5482D09D&__gda__=1418182114_785364daae4f993df57b31f8443a7fa4

Panel next to me that gives you everything you need

At this point, a steward suddenly appeared next to me!

"Welcome on board Sir, would you like anything to drink?"

Well.... I opted for some champagne, of course

While waiting for my welcome drink to arrive, I took some shots out of the window, which proved to be quite difficult.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/10256945_10152644518909540_2913386985907436931_n.jpg?oh=a5b771a6eb2860a4de4442ed4a534105&oe=548E02FC&__gda__=1418841322_3f4d940d5bf57097d5e023c48730e8f3

It looks fine here, but I had to lean quite far forward, and around the side panel to take that shot. Seated normally, it's not too easy to look outside. Comparatively, Qatar's 787 seat doesn't have a big side panel next to your head, making it easier to look out of the window, and also gives the feeling of a more open space.

My champagne soon arrived, along with a hot towel.

Looking down the aisle. Notice how there's a foot hole next to the magazine rack for vertically challenged people to step in to close the overhead bins

Finally the doors were closed, and we were welcomed on board by a Singaporean-sounding purser    The safety video was played as we pushed back!

Dark clouds out there

The mooooo of the mighty GE engines filled the cabin, even drowning out the narration of the safety video. Surely that in itself is a safety hazard?? I almost had to cover my ears as the entire cabin vibrated and resonated with the low frequency. I must say, I really dislike this part about the 77W!! (I know many people are going to berate me for saying that!)

Hey look who it is!

During this time, the purser had come down the aisle and was introducing herself to the passengers in front of me, while thanking them for flying with Cathay Pacific.

Ooo.. Whose turn next? Was she gonna...??

Nope. She walked right by me, lowly non-frequent flier that I am.

Goodbye, my Queen

At this point I decided to take a video of our departure. Some nice sounds of the spool-up, though I'm not a particularly big fan of the GE-90s I'm afraid... Oh, and, I nearly sprained my arm taking the video

Our 77W thundered down the runway and lifted off leisurely into the sky, climbing comfortably and slowly towards cruising altitude...

This storage space, where the headphones are kept, was the reason why it was difficult to take pictures of the wing

To be honest, I can't remember if the menus were given out in the air or on the ground. What I do remember was that the purser gave them out personally. She had the passenger manifest on top of the stack of menus she was carrying, and thus was able to address each of us personally. Sneaky eh

Quality was quite good!

Rather quickly, the cabin crew began coming around to set up our tables for an early dinner. We were served the standard tray, a glass of water, and offered a choice of bread. My aisle was being served by a very friendly Japanese steward.

RE: Cathay Pacific's Business Class: HKG-SGN

Ooo what's that coming down the aisle?

As a first timer on CX's J class, I was quite surprised to see that all the main courses were being pushed down the aisle on a cart. Perhaps someone can advice if this is the norm even on long-haul flights...?

https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xfp1/v/t1.0-9/10590488_10152644529234540_4258902460576672049_n.jpg?oh=d6d335c6137f8c21e3d4d48108e4522a&oe=548616CD&__gda__=1422650280_31f792f42a6398ed1ce04e82a2636b52
Here you can see all 3 main courses on display

"Mr pokfur, what would you like for your main course today? We have the Chicken with rice, Prawn with risotto, and Thai beef with rice," the steward informed me.

In my mind, I had chosen the beef. However with the choices physically in front of me, I decided to go with the tomato chicken with rice!

"Mr pokfur, would you like any wine?" the steward asked.

"Yes, the Australian Shiraz please!" I replied.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xfp1/v/t1.0-9/10574449_10152644529494540_1786466188279502689_n.jpg?oh=5412bfb5548ded3a245b994df367b5d8&oe=548C80AA&__gda__=1422467279_1973c5d555149f38e4d300d6b756591b
Looks yummmy

I'm glad I went with this choice because it tasted really good! Although, I never got to try the beef so it's not as if I knew what I was missing out on... The Shiraz was mighty fine as well. Before I knew it, I had gobbled up my meal!! I continued watching TopGear and eventually my tray was cleared. My glass of wine was topped up and I kept it with me

https://scontent-a-sin.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/10592867_10152644529639540_5254462665079774278_n.jpg?oh=698aab202ede725ab22dd1afa8b33ef9&oe=5490BFA3
I know this isn't a legit wine glass but I think it has a very cute shape!

It wasn't too long later that another trolley was pushed down the aisle, this time with a pile of mini tubs of ice cream atop it! I was offered a variety of flavours, and went with the Cookies & Chocolate flavour YUMMMM. Drinks were offered and I decided to return back to the champagne.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/11207_10152644530324540_2077585418127957375_n.jpg?oh=380d120574d1b694fca3ef6ab43951c7&oe=54826397&__gda__=1422601130_3883314ffcddccd92cbd10b10fe2a221

Well, what's there to complain about Häagen-Dazs ice cream? It was excellent and creamy as expected, though I had to give it some time to melt as it was initially rock-hard.

I must have finished my show to be bored enough to take this picture

For the rest of the flight, we were pretty much left to our own devices, so I took this chance to play around with whatever I could.

I even decided to put my seat into lie-flat mode to test it out, attracting some strange smiles from the cabin crew.

Lots of space in the footwell

Compared to QR's 787 J class, this is one aspect where CX is superior. The swivel screen and tray table allow for an open area for the legs to toss and turn comfortably. On QR, the fixed screen and slide-forward table caused me to painfully jar my shins against them several times.

Priority luggage handling was somewhat useful

Well and that was it! We collected our luggage and stepped out into the hot Vietnamese weather, before making our way to our hotel.

Conclusion

A pleasant experience, Cathay Pacific was. I'm really quite impressed with their reverse herringbone seat. In particular, I liked the small details like the stowage space for shoes, water bottle holder, and even the adjustable armrest. The swivel screen and open leg area make this seat superior to QR's 787 J seat. However, I do prefer the more open feel of the QR seat (at the head and shoulder area) and the layout of buttons. The food on board was decent Business Class offering, although I was surprised by the use of trolleys as opposed to hand delivery from the galley. All in all, there was nothing much that let me down, but also not much that made me really go 'WOW   ' or feel particularly impressed.

Certainly though, I wouldn't hesitate at all to sit CX on a long-haul flight...

...which I'm going to in December!!!

Hi Pokfur,

A very detailed trip report on CX's J. It seems to me CX has a pretty solid product similar to the likes of SQ. I do agree that the boarding does look pretty chaotic to me  . I enjoyed reading your Tr and look forward to your long haul TR in December

PS: I am planning of flying SIN-SYD-SIN in December. Currently I am leaning towards QF (With an EK return from MEL). Are there any other more interesting combination for this route that you know of?

Hi Pokfur!
Many thanks for another wonderful trip report. Once again you had me laughing at some of your experiences! I have travelled with CX twice before to the UK from Oz. I went with my mum in 1992. Back then the service from SYD used to be operated by a 747-200. The flight onto LHR was, back then, considered Ultra Long Haul on a 747-400.
I then went again in 1995 with CX, this time I flew by myself. I flew on VR-HOY to HKG then on VR-HOW to LHR. (The registrations being before HKG went back to China) On the way back I flew on VR-HOW (again!!!!!!) & VR-HUA respectively. This was also when the airline was repainting its fleet to the current livery. Sadly I was on the old colour scheme (which I really loved). The engines, however were already painted in the new scheme. Ironically I had switched my flights from HKG to LHR over from CX255 to CX251. Had I stayed on CX255, I would have ended up travelling on the new livery!!!!!!!! Damn it!!!!!!!!!!!

Hahaha!!! Not sure why you don't like it. I have yet to travel on the 77W, yet I have seen enough videos of the engine start up, to say that I am looking forward to enjoying it myself one day!!!

Once again, thanks for another great trip report

Cheers

pokfur, how’s you doing? Good to see a new report from you, it seems like confusing people is a natural talent of yours    Then you’re in SGN, next HKG, or is it SIN or...? Anywayz, this was again a well written account of your joyride on CX’s T7. I thought that CX did herringbones in their business class? Obviously not, it seems much better like this. You know in 2007 I took exactly the same flight, although back then it was operated on a regional A340-300.

Hello Triple7X!

Quoting triple7X (Reply 4):

Yup! This sector was indeed better than my SGN-SIN sector on SQ later on which was literally nothing to write about. Not even sure if I'll post a TR of it.....?

Quoting triple7X (Reply 4):
I do agree that the boarding does look pretty chaotic to me

Apparently even CX's Marco Polo Green members (all you gotta do is pay the membership fee and you're green) get priority boarding.    Sort of defeats the purpose when you see that queue..

Quoting triple7X (Reply 4):

Thanks! Yup I should be writing one on that, but I'm sure I'll have a few more before December    hehehe...

HMMM... You could try Royal Brunei Airlines. I know they fly to Melbourne but I'm not sure if the price/timing is desirable. Of course MH is having some good sale fares now. Unfortunately I'm not too familiar with flying down South as much as flying to Europe. Haha. Either way I look forward to whatever TR comes out from this trip of yours!

Thanks for dropping by

Many thanks for another wonderful trip report. Once again you had me laughing at some of your experiences!

Thanks for the compliment!! I thought this report was already one of my more boring ones hahahah   . Glad that I was still able to give you the chuckles!

Quoting rb211524g (Reply 5):
Back then the service from SYD used to be operated by a 747-200.

Oooo I miss them 747 classics. I used to take them on short hops to Jakarta back when SQ operated the 747s on such short hops!! I always wondered why some 747s had winglets and some didn't, but of course now I know that they were simply different models!!

Quoting rb211524g (Reply 5):
The flight onto LHR was, back then, considered Ultra Long Haul on a 747-400.

Lol I would still consider a flight from Australia to UK as ultra long-haul even in today's age haha.

Quoting rb211524g (Reply 5):
Had I stayed on CX255, I would have ended up travelling on the new livery!!!!!!!! Damn it!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sure in hindsight, you're glad that you caught the old scheme before they were all gone, right? Haha. Similarly, I am debating with myself now whether to book myself on BA's tired 747 or new 77W for a LHR-SIN flight. To experience the Queen, but deal with an outdated interior/IFE, or the run of the mill 77W with a better cabin? Suggestions..?

Quoting rb211524g (Reply 5):
Hahaha!!! Not sure why you don't like it. I have yet to travel on the 77W, yet I have seen enough videos of the engine start up, to say that I am looking forward to enjoying it myself one day!!!

Trust me! They literally deafen you for a few seconds!!!    I think they are not mechanical enough for me. The RB211s on BA's 767 which I experienced earlier in March were the real deal I tell you. I regret not videoing my take-off.

Quoting rb211524g (Reply 5):
Once again, thanks for another great trip report

You're most welcome! And thanks for leaving a comment too

Quoting Sultanils (Reply 6):
Good to see a new report from you, it seems like confusing people is a natural talent of yours

Lol. It's probably better let my inspiration take over than to force out a badly-written report! Sorry if I caused any distress to you!

Quoting Sultanils (Reply 6):
I thought that CX did herringbones in their business class? Obviously not, it seems much better like this.

Ooo where have you been Nils?! The 77Ws and all A330s (I think) have the reverse herringbone layout. Only the 747s and A340s which are due to be phased out still keep the old (normal) herringbone layout. If CX doesn't play aircraft roulette in December, I'll get a taste of the A340 herringbone on my way from SIN-HKG. Not to mention the A340 itself which I absolutely adore!!

Quoting Sultanils (Reply 6):
That must’ve been an awful lot of stash available

Well.... They do travel quite a lot in general, I suppose. Haha. I imagine if they wrote a TR for every flight they took, they would never be able to finish their backlog!

I guess...

Quoting Sultanils (Reply 6):

Coz I suppose that wouldn't be 'classy' enough for CX?    I would have tried some if not for the fact that I was so full.

Quoting Sultanils (Reply 6):

Lol! You'll never know who's an a.nutter eh?

Quoting Sultanils (Reply 6):

Hello Pokfur,

As always great report, with pictures.
Seeing how comfy and spacious those seats are I think I know who I am going to pick for my trip next year.

Quoting pokfur (Thread starter):
The mooooo of the mighty GE engines filled the cabin, even drowning out the narration of the safety video. Surely that in itself is a safety hazard?? I almost had to cover my ears as the entire cabin vibrated and resonated with the low frequency. I must say, I really dislike this part about the 77W!! (I know many people are going to berate me for saying that!)

I actually like the GE90 sounds, but dislike the length of a 77W ( of the horror when the 8/9 is coming out   )

Quoting pokfur (Thread starter):
I took off my shoes and stowed them in the very useful stowage space.

I think I have to pick low shoes or my size 46 (US 11,5) aren't going to fit   .
And not to bring a lot of carry on with me, seeing all the storage space it wil end with me losing stuff or collecting and checking for half an hour if I have everything.

Anyway thats futuretalk.

Looking forward for your next one.

Hello MH017!

Quoting MH017 (Reply 8):
It's rather HKG-SGN I guess...

Aha! I was testing my readers to see if they were sharp enough to spot this mistake!

Thanks for pointing it out but it's unfortunately too late for me to edit my original post

Quoting MH017 (Reply 8):
.nice TR: love your pictures, esp...

Thanks! And thanks for dropping by

Hello Fallap!

Quoting Fallap (Reply 9):
I love those shoes! Do tell me the brand pretty please!

LOL!!! They're from Bally

Quoting Fallap (Reply 9):
Also great TR btw :P

Thanks for the afterthought

Hello Ramon!

Quoting RamonKok (Reply 10):
As always great report, with pictures.

Thank you!

Quoting RamonKok (Reply 10):
Seeing how comfy and spacious those seats are I think I know who I am going to pick for my trip next year.

Oooo! I have no doubts that you won't be disappointed!!

Quoting RamonKok (Reply 10):
I actually like the GE90 sounds, but dislike the length of a 77W ( of the horror when the 8/9 is coming out   )

I used to think the 773/Ws looked too long when they first came out. But with so many of them around now, I've gotten used to their look and think that the 772s look stubby in comparison! Haha.

Quoting RamonKok (Reply 10):
I think I have to pick low shoes or my size 46 (US 11,5) aren't going to fit   .

HAHA! That sounds like a silly reason to make your feet suffer! I'm sure your shoes will fit just fine!!

Quoting RamonKok (Reply 10):
And not to bring a lot of carry on with me, seeing all the storage space it wil end with me losing stuff or collecting and checking for half an hour if I have everything.

LOL!!! Again, the irony is not lost on me! Haha. But you do have a point; I was quite afraid I had left something behind too.

Thanks for dropping by everyone!

Lol as of now, I'm the least greatest fan of the 777 so I'm ambivalent about the 77X... Kinda glad that SQ went with the A350s because I think I'm a bigger airbus fan! (except the 737s because I adore the Boeing Sky Interior).

Ok haha it seems like I'm a model-specific fan I suppose.

Lol I know there's a video of a Lufthansa A346 bending quite a lot during a cross-wind landing at Narita on YouTube. Maybe you should check it out haha.

Oh I forgot about those! Ok maybe the 77X will prove to be an interesting aircraft after all.. Speaking about 777s, I just booked myself on a BA 77W flight vs a 747 flight   Will I regret it...?

Seriously though, please don't be jealous! I've only travelled a lot more since I wrote my first TR. Before 2013, it was maybe just two or three return flights a year? Or less.

Depends off course on how the onboard experience is, I am still sad that I don't have many pics from a Japan trip on KL 747, especially now that there leaving starting from NOV 15

Depends off course on how the onboard experience is,

The BA 747s have the old interior with tired seats and inferior IFE, while the 77Ws have, of course, the latest products (in Y at least). So, that was a big factor for me, plus BA 15 (77W) leaves London several hours after BA 11 (747), giving me more time to hang out with my girlfriend

So yes, the order of my trip reports are all messed up,

All I know is Pokfur is flying again hence another trip report. Good enough.

Quoting pokfur (Thread starter):
I don't know why, but at one of the stops, a man carrying a baby decided to plonk himself down next to me despite there being quite a large number of empty seats around.

He probably figured you could serve as entertainment for his baby. Guess it worked?

Quoting pokfur (Thread starter):
To my best knowledge, I have never checked in at HKIA before.

Ahh...I was at HKIA mere months after it opened in 1998. I can't recall how I checked in or checked out - too busy cursing the huge space I have to cover on foot while towing luggages. A drastic change from the old Kai Tak.

Quoting pokfur (Thread starter):
Seated normally, it's not too easy to look outside.

That would bug me, I think. I like being able to look out of the window easily.

Quoting pokfur (Thread starter):
The mooooo of the mighty GE engines filled the cabin,

I thought the last 747 I was on mooed as well. Then again I'm tone-deaf when it comes to engine noises.

Quoting pokfur (Thread starter):
Can't reach it!

Sorry, but that's hilarious...

So, more Vietnam trip reports possible? How about some shots of Vietnamese food? Or maybe I should just go eat lunch right now - spent a bit of time fixated on your CX meal and wondered why it looked like generic Chinese food we can get here. I'll take your word for it that it was delicious.

Happy travels!

LOL if me giving annoyed/disgusted looks is 'entertainment', then yes, probably it worked hahaha.

I remember the old Kai Tak for the landing of course. I remember being on SQ's 747s and making that famous turn before touching down! So thrilling!!!

Quoting CdnCactus (Reply 20):

Hmm. After a while you just end up giving up and relaxing back into your seat haha. But well, better this than having a window right in your face in Economy Class eh?

Quoting CdnCactus (Reply 20):
I thought the last 747 I was on mooed as well. Then again I'm tone-deaf when it comes to engine noises.

If it was a 748i, then it *might* have moo-ed (not entirely sure but I assume the GEnx have some similarity to the GE90s). Otherwise, yes, you're probably tone-deaf

Quoting CdnCactus (Reply 20):
Sorry, but that's hilarious...

Omg.    I can't believe you just laughed at me!!!!

Quoting CdnCactus (Reply 20):

Haha I do have the photographs from my Singapore Airlines SGN-SIN flight home, but no inspiration. That flight was, for the lack of a better expression, nothing to write home about. Maybe I'll do it one day if I'm bored....

If it helps, I myself don't really segregate 'Hong Kong' food from 'Chinese food'. To be honest I don't know what type of Chinese dishes come from where!!

Anyway, thanks for dropping by my friend!!

Nice read and pictures, thanks for sharing.

I had my first CX flight last year, simply superb! - I've two more J sectors booked next month and a daytime F class flight to LHR booked next year, cannot wait for that one!

Quoting pokfur (Thread starter):
She then proceeded to ask for proof of our SQ flight from SGN-SIN, as our CX flight HKG-SGN was booked as a one-way ticket, and I suppose they don't want you to enter the country without having made plans to leave it....???

- Not uncommon, I had to provide the same info when I flew into CGK with MH, the flight out was with CX.

Cheers

Wait a minute, are we the same person?    Because last week I decided to stop with my study probably after december this year for the same reason (and because Dutch is a too difficult language, I prefer English for speaking and listening), I still like the work and I am not planning to leave but maybe in a couple of years. It also helps that for travel I am not bound to holidays, saves some

Ok the -8 I agree, but you are not ruining the A332 for me. I actually can't see that much of a difference between the 330 sizes, especially on DL.

Pokfur!

Another nice story, even if a bit messed up in order lol.

Quoting pokfur (Thread starter):
I thought it was better to just post up whatever I felt like posting first!

We live in a free world.

Quoting pokfur (Thread starter):
This time, we leave Hong Kong for Ho Chi Minh City for a couple of days of work

¨work¨ huh?    sure...

Quoting pokfur (Thread starter):
we went on about our plan - shopping!! Except that I was a good boy and wasn't spending much money this trip

Again...    sure...

Quoting pokfur (Thread starter):
Hey it's true    I know what you're thinking....

Quoting pokfur (Thread starter):
I rounded the corner, I was shocked to find my parents happily seated at one of the tables already!

Like, how did they get here faster than I???

Never underestimate the power of parents... sometimes they come up with some bizarre stuff...

Quoting pokfur (Thread starter):
I ordered a cappuccino, and an ice cream for dessert

Hmm... works for me too!

Quoting pokfur (Thread starter):
Panel next to me that gives you everything you need

Where´s the eject seat button?

Quoting pokfur (Thread starter):
The mooooo of the mighty GE engines filled the cabin, even drowning out the narration of the safety video. Surely that in itself is a safety hazard?? I almost had to cover my ears as the entire cabin vibrated and resonated with the low frequency. I must say, I really dislike this part about the 77W!! (I know many people are going to berate me for saying that!)

Wait what... hold on... WHAT!

Engine startup on the 77W has to be THE coolest part of the whole thing, followed by spool up on takeoff... I get a tingly spine listening to it, even on youtube videos.

Quoting pokfur (Thread starter):
I was watching TopGear

Can´t go wrong with Jezza.

Quoting pokfur (Thread starter):
Certainly though, I wouldn't hesitate at all to sit CX on a long-haul flight...

Me neither, but for now its just a dream...

Quoting pokfur (Thread starter):
...which I'm going to in December!!!

   damn you...

Fantastic report once again, must get back to Honky Town sometime soon, I loved it!

Ha. Did you get a tingly spine watching my youtube video? Lol! Yeah I mean sure the 77W's engines have their own unique sound but not really my kind. I much prefer the more raw-sounding engines. PWs on the A330s and RB211s on the 767s are my favourite!

This should be SOP for most airlines. They get fined if they let you fly in, and you are denied entry due to not having the correct documents (e.g. an onward ticket).

Hi gabriel!

Nice report.

Thanks! Sorry for the delay in reply; been busy travelling as you may know

I'm flying the new J class on the A330 next month to NGO...can't wait!

Enjoy your flight! While I still prefer QR's 787 seats, CX's ones probably come up second.

Fined?? Really! Hmm ok. Now that you mention it, I was asked the same thing for my recent QR flight to LHR as well, since my return leg was on a different airline.

Cheers! Enjoy your travels
