United 787-9 To LAX + Amtrak's Sunset Limited

Sun Oct 05, 2014 5:02 pm

.

Planes and trains. Two modes of transportation that I've always loved nearly equally. The thrill of flying 5 miles above the earth doing 600mph is hard to beat; but at the same time, there's something to be said for taking the long way home...to seeing America from "see" level....and Amtrak usually gets it done with decent service, good food, and comfortable accommodations.

When looking to book this trip (it took place in late September, 2014)...just a simple LAX out and back...fly one way, take the train home...I was initially looking at taking DL's afternoon nonstop from MSY, until I remembered that UA's brand new 787-9 was flying the IAH-LAX route. After a quick search I spotted the 789 flight, and it was at a perfect time for my trip. The 789 was due to arrive LAX at around 1600, and my train was to leave at 2200. That would give me some time to hang in LAX, which is never a bad thing. On the day of departure, the United app offered me to upgrade for an amazing price, so I took advantage of it. I usually fly Y, so flying F on a brand new widebody was sure to be a treat.

MSY-IAH-LAX (United)

I'd fly over to IAH from MSY on a new UA Express/Mesa E175. Let me tell you, that was probably the worst coach seat I've ever sat in...even worse than the new United Airbus seat. There was literally no padding. My rear end was very sore after just 45 minutes in the air. A true shame, because I like the E-Jets. The 789, OTOH, exceeded expectations. I had flown on a 787-8 twice before (in Y), and the first thing that jumped out at me was the quiet cabin. Indeed, this was case on the -9 as well. It was only somewhat loud on engine start-up, but then quickly rescinded for the rest of the flight. The seat I had, 8A, was very comfortable, with a good amount of personal space. Not much room for your feet in the lie flat position, and since I'm kind of a big guy, it was kind of a squeeze when the seat was in bed mode, but a quick turn to the side fixed that problem. The flight attendants were friendly and the service was good...pre departure drink, then a warm towel service after takeoff, followed by nuts and another drink, then lunch, then coffee/tea, and lastly desert (warm cookies which I did not get a picture of). The choice of in flight entertainment was excellent. I watched a movie I had been wanting to watch, "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty", and I'm glad I did. The flight was on time, and there was nary a bump the entire way. Lastly, even those I was on the side of the a/c which had direct sunlight right into my window, the 787's window tinting feature easily solved that problem. The darkest setting blocks out 100% of the brightness, but still allows you to see out. What an airplane.

LAX-NOL (Amtrak)

I booked a Superliner Roomette, aka a private compartment for one person (technically two can fit, but it's better for one) on train #2, the Sunset Limited (hence my user name), which provides 3X weekly service between Los Angeles and New Orleans via Tuscon, El Paso, San Antonio, and Houston, a route stretching 1995 miles and taking two nights to complete. It's not Amtrak's most scenic mid con route, but it's still nice in its own right. All Amtrak trains in LAX depart from the beautiful and iconic Union Station, which is easy to reach from LAX via the FlyAway bus, which runs every 30 minutes, nonstop, for $12. Super convenient...I've used it many times. At the station itself, I was able to spend some time in the new Amtrak Metropolitan Lounge, which can be accessed by Business Class and Sleeping Car passengers. There are a bunch of free snacks plus soda, juice, coffee, and tea. The seating is quite comfortable, as well. Boarding start at 2100 from track 11. I had room #10 in the 0230 car, which was the first Sleeping Car next to the Dining Car. Very convenient. My bed was already down for the evening when I boarded. We departed on time at 2200 and were on time for the vast majority of the trip, only getting held up between El Paso and Alpine, TX and also somewhere in Louisiana. Ultimately, we arrived New Orleans at 2142, just two minutes behind schedule. The food on the Sunset was good to very good, as was the service in the food service cars. My Sleeping Car attendant left a lot to be desired, but it's always a mixed bag. The train was very busy, as it usually is, and I met some interesting people over meals as well as in the Sightseer Lounge Car. As usual, riding the train was one big social experiment.

From here on out, I'll let the pictures do the talking. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. I don't find much point in boring people the death with excessive details. All pics were take by my cell phone so it's not amazing quality.

Great report. I was in Cali last winter and I met someone whose heads to the Rose Bowl every year from Iillinois by Amtrak. She said while she doesn't love to fly just the pace to be able to enjoy the journey on Amtrack is enjoyable. I think I iwill have to try it sometime.

Great report

Wow. I had no idea AMTRAK was so nice. Must be expensive.
Was it boring at times though? How many days?

The F meal you got on UNITED was the same I used to get in economy on UNITED from La Guardia to Chicago; soup and sandwich and it was great.

Economy meals to California from New York were also great. Bagels, lox, cream cheese etc.

UNITED to serve the best economy meals in the 1970s. They were my favorite then. No more.

Thanks for reading. Some of the routes like SFO-ORD and LAX-ORD are incredibly scenic. SEA-ORD is nice, as well...as is LAX-SEA.

It can be depending on the time of the year, by my one-way private room was less than a one-way walk up fare on Southwest in the LAX-MSY market. There are good deals to be had, you just have to research a little.

I never find it boring, but I guess some people might. LAX-MSY on the train is 2 nights...you leave LAX at 10:00pm, and arrive at 9:40pm on the second day.

The sandwich itself tasted great (hot ham and cheese) and the soup was very flavorful. A small salad would have been a nice touch to accompany it, but by the time the meal service was over, I was pretty full. The constant drink runs made it a great experience, as well.

You just gave me the idea to do this, but on a much smaller scale. I'm thinking a daytrip to either MCI or ORD and back to STL. Still debating whether it'll be train and then plane or the other way around.

And if I do go to ORD, still undecided on whether to go by air both ways and spend a day spotting there instead.

Did you get Alice Wong aka the Dragon Lady in the dinning car? We did the Sunset Limited trip from LA Union Station in January all the way to NOLA. We were in bedroom E. The whole having the beds made when you board the SL made it really difficult to settle in.

STL-MCI has the nicer views, but some of the STL-ORD trains have been upgraded to 110mph service, which is neat in its own right. Tough call.

No, I lucked out and had Jose. He was on point. Very pleasant.

That kind of annoyed me too, having the beds down already. Like you said, difficult to get settled in.

Alice maybe called the "Dragon Lady" but its only because she runs the dining car her way with an iron fist. 79 years old and 30 years with Amtrak. With the passengers, she is a sweetheart! We had her in January and I have to say she kept us amused and entertained the whole trip.

Sounds like an old school railroader! Amtrak still has quite a few of those around the system. I've had really terrible service, excellent service, and everything in between. Ultimately, it's what you make of it. I know to expect the unexpected going in, so I'm rarely disappointed.

Avgeek that I am the charm of this great report was the train. I was drawn to read your report simply because it offered a new and fresh approach to a trip and trip report. I love the trains in Europe, and recently rode Amtrak's Star Light from Tampa to Wilmington DE in a single Roomette at exactly $115 more than WN or US fares to PHL. For the train service, I received a private room w/toilet, a made up bed, and all meals for a 24 hour journey. We departed at 515pm so the bed was made up later, and the attendant was very personable and professional throughout the trip. He ultimately wants to crew on a cruise ship, and laughed he'd not get seasick after years on a jostling train. I too found the food to be good, and I enjoyed just stopping for 24 hours to relax, read, meet an interesting mix of folks, watch some scenery you don't see on an Interstate, and found myself not bored at any point in the trip. There was even a honeymoon couple on the train who wanted to do something "different" than a Caribbean island or a cruise which was a nice twist to a 20-something honeymoon getaway. Delightful people. We shared some good wine and laughs in the parlor car.
Thanks again for the mix of plane and train. The pictures of the landscape from the train made for a best read, and I truly felt I was along for the ride. Awesome report, and look forward to a future trip and report from you.

Thanks for the positive feedback! Very much appreciated.

BTW, like you were saying, that ride up and down the east coast is nice in its own right. I was living in ATL for a while and I found myself taking the train from there up to D.C and NYC every so often. Once I flew DL to SAV for $39 (during the days when FL was still flying the route, hence the super cheap price) and then took the Silver Meteor from SAV up to D.C.

Great report but the 787-9 looks nothing special really and the food looks particularly bad for a hub to hub route. Your train had much better food!

Hope you enjoyed LA while you were out here. It truly is a wonderful city

Yeah no kidding. They used Katrina as an excuse to kill the eastern portion of the train. Decent sized cities/areas like Gulfport/Biloxi, Mobile, Pensacola, and Tallahassee no longer have Amtrak service and no one seems to care.

The quality was good, but like I said even a small salad would have made a difference. At least I knew what to expect going in lol. The -9 was virtually the same as the -8. Very nice airplane, but the UA interior on the whole is kind of bland.

I tell you what, we had some good chefs on that train!

The quality was good, but like I said even a small salad would have made a difference. At least I knew what to expect going in lol. The -9 was virtually the same as the -8. Very nice airplane, but the UA interior on the whole is kind of bland.

Yes unfortunately the layout, seat patterns, and overall motif of the 787 is just dated with UA. I feel this would have been cutting edge in 2006, but certainly not now. I've done the footwell on the new PS (same seat as this) and it just wasn't adequate enough for someone who is 6 foot.

I'm just about 6 foot and I had to cross my feet. I couldn't keep them apart without being squished like a sardine can.
Spread hope like fire.

Great report. My favourite bit was actually the Amtrak journey! I would love to do that one day it looks great. Was surprised to see they had lounges too. I have only done a short run on Amtrak from Boston to Providence so not really anything special.

Thanks for the insight.

Great trip report and great pics!

I'm glad to see a trip report about the UA 787-9.

Lastly, even those I was on the side of the a/c which had direct sunlight right into my window, the 787's window tinting feature easily solved that problem. The darkest setting blocks out 100% of the brightness, but still allows you to see out. What an airplane.

Those were my thoughts exactly when I flew DEN-IAH on the UA 787-8. Amazing window technology - what a plane!

I can't wait to log a -9

Awesome trip! Were taking the Empire Builder from Portland to Chicago and then the Lakeshore Limited from Chicago to Boston. The return will be UA business class from BUF to SFO to MFR.
