Day Trip To CLT And Miracle On The Hudson A320

Sun Nov 23, 2014 1:50 am

One year before this trip I was flying to NYC for the weekend, on the flight home from JFK-SYR the flight was oversold and I gave up my seat. They paid for my cab and I had to take a flight from LGA to SYR instead of JFK. Since I gave up my seat I got a $500 travel voucher. I had to use the voucher so my friend and I (we are both going to be pilots) decided to go on a day trip. We were looking at different places to go and decided on a day trip to CLT. We would go the Carolinas Aviation Museum and see the US A320 that landed on the Hudson River and then do some planespotting. We booked our flight in early August for a Friday at the end of October and the total was a little over $600 dollars so we only had to pay a little over 100 dollars because I had my 500 dollar credit. There were a few options we could choose from. All had stops in JFK, LGA, ATL, DTW, and MSP. We decided we would take two Endeavor CRJ-900s to CLT through LGA for the flight down. For the flight back it would be a MD88 to ATL and then a MD90 back to SYR. About a month before our flight we got an email that said they had changed our LGA-CLT flight from 815AM to 8AM which left us about 40 minutes in between our flights. On the return flight the times stayed the same but the MD88 from CLT-ATL was now a MD90, so now we would be on two MD90s instead of an 88 and a 90. The time went by fast from the time that we made the flight until the day we left. Our flight left early at 6am Friday morning. Thursday night we went to the airport to see a B6 E190 to JFK. This would be the last time we would be able to see the night flight. B6 does not operate it in the winter and the last flight was Friday night while we were in CLT. We left the airport once it landed and then I went home and packed and tried to get to bed somewhat early since I had to get up at 3AM for my flight.
The day of the trip:
I set a couple of alarms to make sure that I got up. I actually woke up a few minutes before my alarm at 250AM. I was not too tired considering I went to bed at midnight. I got ready and we had about a 5 to 10 minute drive to SYR. My friend’s mom drove us and she dropped us off outside the DL curbside. We walked inside and checked in at the kiosk at 3:48AM. There were a few other people on line and the DL counter didn’t open until 4AM. Once we got checked in we walked down to go see a few planes then went up to security. We had to wait a few minutes to go through (it also didn’t open until 4AM). Once we were through security we got Dunkin Doughnuts and then went to go see the different planes. There are quite a few planes this early in the morning. After that we went to our gate and waited to board.

Around 530-535AM they began boarding. They started with First Class, Gold, Silver, Platinum, Pre board and then general boarding by zones. I was in the back in seat 18A ( Zone 3)

Boarding was pretty quick and we were ready to go 10 minutes early, but the pilots said we could not pushback until 5 minutes before departure. We pushed back at 5:55AM and the flight attendants did the safety demo. Once we were pushed back and the engines started we taxied to runway 28. We had to hold at the end for a FedEx A300 landing from MEM. Once they were cleared we turned onto the runway and began our takeoff roll. The DL MD90 to ATL took off right behind us and the B6 E190 to JFK right behind the MD90. The takeoff was not that powerful and within a few seconds we were in the air. At 2,200 feet the pilots checked in with departure and we were given a left turn and were cleared up to 10,000 feet. Within a few seconds of takeoff we flew into a broken cloud layer. You could still see the ground but it was covered by a lower of clouds. As we climbed we flew through some more clouds and then we were in the clear and had a smooth ride. A few minutes after departure ATC asked our pilots how are ride was. They responded “Uhhhh smooth we are on top of them now”. The controller then handed us off to Boston Center and we were on the way up to 21,000 feet and headed to LGA. Since it was such a short flight the Flight Attendants didn’t do any service. It was still dark out for most of the flight and as we began the descent it slowly started to get lighter out. The flight was very short and it went by really fast. Before long we were on the final descent into LGA. The flight attendants turned on the lights and came through the cabin once. We then made a right turn and flew the express way visual for runway 31. We followed a DL E170 from DCA flight 5900. We made a firm landing and the pilots exited the runway pretty quickly and the Flight Attendant “Welcomed us to Flushing, NY – LaGuardia Airport where the local time is 650AM”. We made a quick taxi to the gate and parked away from the terminal which meant we deplaned out on the ramp and took a bus to the terminal. It was a pretty quick layover. We got some food and then sat by our gate and waited to board.

When we boarded this flight, it was the same crew from the SYR-LGA flight. Once everyone was seated we sat at the gate for a few minutes. The pilot came on the PA and gave the spiel about flight time, weather and time of arrival. Once the door was closed, we pushed back and started up the engines. Runway 4 was the active for departures and 31 was for arrivals. We taxied away from the DL terminal and taxied past all the other terminals on the way to runway 4. I saw a UA 737 with split scimitar and some other planes. There about 7 or 8 planes in front of us and after about a 15-20 minute taxi, it was our turn to takeoff. The pilots taxied us on to the runway and began our takeoff roll. Once we were in the air we made a left turn right after takeoff and then made another left turn as we climbed through some clouds. There were a few bumps on the way out and once we got on top it was a smooth ride. Once we leveled off at our cruising altitude the Flight Attendants came through the cabin with the beverage cart and snacks. I got a sprite and a Biscoff cookie. The flight went by pretty fast and before long the pilot was telling us we were about 80 miles outside of CLT and told us the weather. It was a pretty straight in approach. The Flight Attendants came through to collect trash. A few minutes later we touched down on runway 23 and there was really heaving braking, the plane slowed down really fast. We then exited the runway and taxied to our gate. The crew after this had one more flight of the day. They were going CLT-MSP. They were MSP based and would be done with this trip once they landed at MSP.

The Museum was great. They had some old planes in addition to the last DL DC9 (N779NC). DL flew it’s last DC-9 from ATL-CLT and then donated it to the museum. They also had the US A320 (N106US) that landed in the Hudson River. That was really impressive to see and be able to get right next to see it and see all the holes in the plane, the cracked windows and see the plane in person. After the museum we went into a parking garage and went planespotting for a little bit before we went back inside and checked in and went through a very long ( 45 minutes- 1 hour) security line. There were a few people in front of us that had less than 45 minutes until there flight. As we approached the front of the line TSA announced they were opening another lane and for people from the back of that line to go to the other screening area. Once we were through security we got some food and then did some planespotting from inside the airport until it was time to board our next flight CLT-ATL.

http://i.imgur.com/KeFm4j9.jpg
At 4pm our MD90 pulled into the gate. It arrived as the same flight we were taking. It was flight 316 from ATL, we were taking flight 316 to ATL. About 20 minutes after the plane pulled up to the gate they began boarding. They started with First Class and then Silver, Platinum ETC, Pre Board and then then by Zones. Once we boarded and everyone was sitting we pushed back and then sat there for about 5 minutes before they started the engines. Then we taxied a little bit and were given taxi instructions to hold for a little bit. Our release time wasn’t for 25 minutes. After waiting the 25 minutes we taxied to runway 18C and took off at 5:33PM. After takeoff we made a right turn and climbed up to 28,000 feet. The Flight Attendants did not do any service since it was only scheduled to be a 40 minute flight. The flight went by very fast and before long we were descending into ATL. We made a few turns in the descent before lining up for runway 26R. A WN 737 was a little ways behind us for 27L. We touched down in ATL at 6:11PM. As we taxied I saw the new VS 787-900. It took a long time for everyone to get off. The people in the row behind me had a very tight connection. Once everyone was clear they started to hurry off the plane but some lady stood up and started to get her bag out of the overhead bin. The bag was jammed in there and she had a hard time getting it out. For about two minutes she did not let the people that had the tight connection go by her, she just blocked the aisle. On our way out we wanted to see the cockpit and talk to the pilots. When we asked the Flight Attendant up front she said that they had already left. She said they had a shorter day then them. The Flight Attendants on our flight were SFO based, and this was their first day of the trip. Earlier in the day they flew SFO-ATL on a 737-900. Once in ATL they got on our MD90 and flew to CLT then flew our flight back to ATL. Once in ATL, they had one more flight to CMH. During a connection we went over to the “F” concourse. We then went to our concourse. At our concourse we got some food and then went to our gate. Our connection was not as long as we planned since it took a while to leave CLT.

Getting ready to push
http://i.imgur.com/DYncGKq.jpg
There is not too say about this flight. We pushed back the Flight Attendants did the safety demo, and we taxied to the runway. It was about a 15-20 minute taxi. On the way out all the planes that were taking off 26L and they were passing my side of the plane. The only plane I saw takeoff that was not DL, was a F9 A320 to DEN. Once it was our turn the pilots taxied us onto the runway and we began our roll. Once we were in the air, we made a right turn and climbed up to 31,000 feet. As we took off DL 200 to JNB was taking off the parallel runway. Once were up at our cruising altitude the Flight Attendants did a service. I got a Sprite and Biscoff. This was the longest of all the flights. It felt on the longer side. About 30 minutes prior to landing the pilots made an announcement. They informed us we were about 30 minutes from landing and the weather in SYR. The rest of the flight was quick. Once we passed 10,000 the Flight Attendants turned on the cabin lights and came through the cabin to collect trash. As we approached SYR it was to our right, so we turned left and flew past the airport. We turned about a 4 or 5 mile base and then landed on runway 28. We exited at taxiway Golf then taxied to gate 25 on Alpha and Echo. Deplaning was fast and we had to wait a little bit since we were all the way in the back. It was not too long. When we deplaned we were in the same spot we were in 16 hours earlier. We did not check bags so we did not have to wait for them. Within a few minutes of getting off the plane we were on our way home.

I had never done a day trip and it was great to be able to fly on 4 flights in one day. In one day I flew on 2 different type of aircraft, 4 planes, to 4 different airports in 3 states. I spent 4 hours 36 minutes in the air and flew 1,905 miles. It was a great day and a lot of fun to do so much flying!

Hey JetBlue, Great report, thx for shearing. I just love those MD jets.

Sounds like a good deal for me! Even when I fly 100% full plane they never offered anyone to get off the plane.

We booked our flight in early August for a Friday at the end of October and the total was a little over $600 dollars so we only had to pay a little over 100 dollars because I had my 500 dollar credit.

I can't believe prices of flights in the US. Here, for $600 you can fly from TLV to LHR, MAD or AMS and you'll still get change.

My favorite MD seat is always between the wing and the engine.

The museum in CLT looks like a must place to go. Maybe next time I'm in north America. Jonathan

The flight was overbooked, they were offering you a travel voucher if you gave up your seat
