Qatar Airways A350-900 World Inaugural Flight

Qatar Airways A350-900 World Inaugural Flight

AN EVOLUTION IN AIR TRAVEL

Innovations in passenger comfort and well-being take your flying experience to a new level.
Sit back and relax into spacious seats, take in the view from panoramic windows with electromechanical shades that go from fully transparent to opaque in Business Class, and feel the difference of a wider cabin.

A model of efficiency by design, the A350 XWB is one of the lightest aircraft of its type, made from advanced composite materials and powered by two new-generation Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines. This also makes it kinder to the earth, with 25% lower CO2 emissions than with current generation aircraft in its category.

Now, you can travel at a fast cruise speed of Mach 0.85 while leaving the lowest carbon emissions. You can experience state-of-the-art technology while enjoying superior comfort.
It is air travel that is truly ahead of the curve. Introducing the Qatar Airways A350 XWB.

15 January 2015 QR67 DOHA - FRANKFURT

The inaugural of A350 is the last major widebody aircraft type entering commercial service in this decade so it is a significant event that I am very lucky and privileged to attend. Most of us have flown the Boeing 787 so now it is time to see what Airbus has to offer to be competitive.
Many would argue this plane would fly for the next 20 years or so and have plenty of chance to fly and sample. However an inaugural maiden voyage has its own significant meaning and it only happen once!

I arrived on the day from Abu Dhabi with a short connection in Doha. The boarding gate A3 has been specially decored for the occasion of the inaugural A350 flight. Qatar Airways is very proud of this.
I must say about 60%-70% of the passenger were not aware of the A350 inaugural flight; they booked on as per usual flight and only became aware how lucky they were at the gate when a full ceremony took place.

Gift pack for every guest travelling on A350 flight. Inside the gift pack, it includes an A350 plane model and a Flight Certificate.

Many aviation enthusiasts understood the significance of the flight and joined together in Doha. Many of them belong to the “First to Fly” group, which some of them have flown all 13 A380 inaugurals!

CNN’s Richard Quest would not miss such an importance event for interviewing the passengers!

After first flight group photo, we boarded the flight with 2 aerobridge separating Business and Economy passengers. As my usual custom, a photo with the welcoming crew at the door, Ms Jelly from Serbia.

The doors closed and we pushed back pretty much ontime. “This flight is bound for Frankfurt”.

With a short taxi, we were at the threshold of Runway 34 of the new Doha Hamed International. With a Northerly runway heading, we were airborne at around 08:05am. Literally every passenger in the window seat was photographing, videoing the historical airborne moment.
It was such a smooth takeoff and riding out a clear, almost haze free sky of Doha in the morning. The noise level is so quiet you can hardly notice anything. Smooth and Quiet. The first impression was excellent! It is much quieter than the B777 and B787.

TOUR AND ONBOARD CELEBRATION

I was originally assigned in 36C and there were no window seat available at the time of booking. (guess you know the reason). Business Class was booked solid and I knew I have little chance when I booked at rather late stage. A window seat, 35A came up when I use online check-in so I immediately switched and I was very lucky as it was just after the wing and have a great view with the sun behind during the course of the flight.
After take-off, I went up to Business Class to join a few lucky enthusiasts there. The ambience was perfect, a wide cabin with no overhead bins in the middle, luxurious all aisle seating. There is a self service bar in the middle separating two section of Business Class. The first section located door 1 to door 2 has 6 rows with 24 seats. A smaller second section immediately after door 2 adds another 12 seats (3 rows) makes it total 36 seats. The same seat can be found on Qatar Airways A380 and B787.

You can see my latest book is on offer at the A350 bar table.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/QR359/slides/28.JPGhttp://www.samchuiphotos.com/QR359/slides/27.JPG

After about 1.5 hours in-flight, we were treated with amazing beautiful and clear view of Northwest part of Iran and Turkey. Snow capped mountain, crystal clear volcano crater lake, your world is an amazing place from 39,000 feet!

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/QR359/slides/29.JPG

Huge window from every seat, well done Airbus, a huge improvement over previous product.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/QR359/slides/30.JPG

Breakfast is served with choice of Omelet or chocolate/banana pancake in Economy Class. I have the pancake, despite the dark brown look, they’re delicious. Others complainted the omelet being too plain.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/QR359/slides/31.JPG

Almost full economy class. The overhead bins are curved like the Boeing Signature cabin design provided much better headroom than previous Airbus models.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/QR359/slides/32.JPG

Guess who is the man getting all the attention of fellow Avgeeks? Yes, he is the Qatar Airways group CEO, His Excellency, Mr Akbar Al Baker.

We spent almost an hour chatting aviation topics with Mr Al Baker, his depth of knowledge is really admirable and he has a quick wit and always come back with a smart comment! Unlike most Western media portrayed him, he is approachable, warm and single handly managed the airline from meeting new recruit, closely manage day-to-day operation and even calling customer replying their complaint personally over the phone! He is a real cult-figure. Couldn’t possibly think of another airline CEO nearly with this cult of personality.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/QR359/slides/34.JPG

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/QR359/slides/35.JPG

A photo with Qatar Airways excellent cabin crew is a must. We have over 10 different nationalities crew onboard from Poland, Serbia, Romania, Morocco, India, Singapore, Philippines and more. I think I am qualified to say Qatar Airways crew have best grooming and looks polished over other Middle Eastern peers as I fly a lot in the region and internationally with the Middle East big 3. The service and soft product from Qatar is the best.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/QR359/slides/36.JPG

The crews were happy to show us the crew rest located near the rear galley in the middle. It can accommodate 6 crew at a time with 3 bunk beds behind, 2 in the front and 1 behind (not in this picture)

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/QR359/slides/33.JPG

After all the tour and socializing, we were almost landing in Frankfurt as the excellent IFE shows.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/QR359/slides/37.JPG

The IFE came with high definition camera from the tail provide much clearer image.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/QR359/slides/38.JPG

We flew over Frankfurt airport during approach to new runway 25R which give us a great view of activity of FRAPORT from above. After a good and hard rubber kissing on the runway with strong cross wind, the world’s inaugural A350 flight landed 25 minutes ahead of schedule. We spent considerable amount of time taxiing to our gate provided good opportunity for every FRAPORT staff to photograph our shiny new plane.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/QR359/slides/39.JPG

After landing before deplane, I was allowed to see the cockpit.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/QR359/slides/40.JPG

Captain Konstantinos from Greece have the honor to fly the world first A350 commercial flight.

http://www.samchuiphotos.com/QR359/slides/41.JPG

CONCLUSION

I was truly impressed and wowed by the A350. It is much wider and technological advance which makes flying a real pleasure. Innovations in passenger comfort and well-being take the flying experience to a new level. The economy seat is wider, have more legroom than average. QR is the first airline that fully integrated the in-flight entertainment box into the frame of the seat and no longer blocking your feet. Business seat is as comfortable as a First Class seat with all aisle access. Onboard Wifi is also available. Qatar successfully created a great onboard ambience other airline couldn’t match. My flight with Qatar A350 is a real winner. 15 Jan 2015, a new aviation milestone has been set in the history of aviation. Congratulations Airbus and Qatar Airways.

Great report, came looking for it today and wasn't dissapointed! Thanks!

I have to say I don't like the bar in the middle of the business class section. The lack of a proper section divider completely exposes the toilets to the cabin and probably creates a lot of noise from people standing, chatting, waiting for their turn on the toilets etc. I hope other airlines don't follow this concept in their cabins!

Nevertheless, looking forward to my first A350 flight sometime soon!

Any informations given why QR chose the A350-900? The a/c seems comparable to the B787-9 - so why isn't QR building up a single fleet around the B787 family (with the B787-8 already operating)?

I was already asked several times why I did not participate to the A350XWB inaugural flight. I could definitely have been on board but I wasn't going to do this one -- without any shame.

From the moment I heard that Qatar would be the launch customer for the new A350XWB I knew that me old life long Avgeek wasn't going to be on board the inaugural flight.

I cannot patronize airlines from countries that treat some of their labour force as if they are less than animals.

No EK EY QR
Total boycott for human rights reasons. Never set foot on board their aircraft. No compromise at any level.

I refuse to sponsor these ruthless leaders at any level. I will not participate to anything or any event that will promote them..
I did not want to be a part of this for all the reasons quoted above, the same as I will not go on the North Korea aviation tours.

I am happy to see you all had a great time on the flight - but I had no place being on this one.

The Airbus A350XWB is a beautiful, elegant aircraft. I got to spend much time on board on static display, with leisurely visits by courtesy of the wonderful Airbus test pilots. I know I will be on board again.

The fact that I did not go on the QR inaugural does not take away my appreciation for this beautiful, new, high tech state of the art Airbus creation.

There will be other airlines receiving the A350XWB with more inaugurals. I certainly don't regret having missed out on the Qatar event.

This has to be single coolest TR i have ever seen on A.net - ever!

Not because of how well the inflight entertainment and meals and seats were described but rather how well the drama of the overall event was captured. How cool is it to be on the same flight not only with so many other enthusiasts but also have the opportunity to mingle with the likes on Quest, Al Baker and CEO of Airbus !!

Awesome stuff Mr. Chui - congrats on a truly once in a lifetime type of event!

Unlike EK and EY, QR is adopting a more lounging approach to their premium cabin, I see the Pros and Cons. To my own preference, I like it, it shows the spaciousness of the cabin. But I agree the bar may attract a lot of people standing and chatting around.

The A350 is wider than the B787 and 3-3-3 config feels right. The seat has at least 33" seat pitch, do not feel cramped and narrow at all. QR is the first airline done away with IFE Boxes and completely integrate them under the seat.

Fantastic, the seats are also slightly wider than on the 787, I have made the decision that I WILL fly the A350 this year hehehe, it just looks so cool!

That was a very enjoyable read! Trip reports like this are the best bit of this site. Thank-you Sam for your efforts to document the flight for all of us that couldn't be there. The cabin looks fantastic; very comfortable and modern. I really can't wait to fly on an A350. Hopefully PVG-HEL with Finnair at the end of the year.

What is the noise level like in the cabin during cruise? Quieter than an A380? Did you feel the benefits of the lower cabin altitude?

Also nice to see that there are plenty of other avgeeks who have a commitment to as many inaugural flights as they can. Big respect to that gentleman who went on the 747's first flight. I've only ever been on one inaugural, but certainly intend to do more.

Fantastic photos too. Keep up the good work!

And wow meeting Richard Quest and Mr Al Baker... cool!

Personally, I'd be more excited about the opportunity to meet Mr Bregier.   Pity he didn't bring along John Leahy too. Would love to chat to either of them.

Gift pack for every guest travelling on A350 flight. Inside the gift pack, it includes an A350 plane model and a Flight Certificate.

A very nice touch! I was annoyed at the lack of certificate for my inaugural. Were the certificates signed? On the inaugural of Etihad's A380, all the certificates were signed by the CEO which is pretty cool.

Quoting loalq (Reply 8):
I have to say I don't like the bar in the middle of the business class section. The lack of a proper section divider completely exposes the toilets to the cabin and probably creates a lot of noise from people standing, chatting, waiting for their turn on the toilets etc. I hope other airlines don't follow this concept in their cabins!

I agree with you about the toilets being too open, but the open-plan layout looks to give a nice ambiance around the bar. The illuminated Qatar logo on the bar itself is a very nice touch.

Quoting N178UA (Reply 22):
What's the carpet issue, care to share? I didn't know it.

The reason for Qatar delaying delivery of their first A380s and A350 was apparently attributed to an issue with the carpet.

Hi Sam,

An excellent report and good to finally see the competition to the 787. Overall, things look very similar, and it is good that airlines can standardise products now between the 787/A350/ A380.

I think I prefer the curvature of the ceiling in the 787, but that is the only thing that I noticed. I am also glad to see Airbus maintains window shades... it is a concept that I do not like on the 787, or at least I do not think them dim sufficiently when the sun is shining in at you for a whole flight duration.

Nice to see His Excellency holding court with the aviation lads... the FA is adoringly looking along like she would have his offspring. How much of a buffoon was Quest in real life I wonder? The first time I heard him on CNN, I thought it was a sort of charity event where they get down-and-outters to present for a segment. But, then I found out it was serious. Still he speaks a lot on aviation.

Agree about the level of grooming in flight attendants. They are sleek and immaculate. I hope their lippy is subsidised.

One gets the impression, again and again, that QR is only interested in premium PAX, and in doing so, is really taking its eye off the ball in Y class. Hard product remains excellent there, but food and service often suffer in Y.

Can't wait to fly the A350, the plane with shades on!

Thanks for your comment. You're entitled to your beliefs and I am definitely convinced you can easily afford to fly A350 at your wish. Personally I never mix politics and planes

I recall you flew Iran Air not long ago, is that implies you approve the Islamic Govt of Iran?

And Sam chose to spend his on the inaugural A350 be it QR or CX or JL or AY or whoever would have flown the A350 first.

Therefore your initial ramble about human rights, evil Sheikhs, etc I tnink where really unnecessary and uncalled for, and contribute nothing to the conversation, those are your opinions, we respect them but keep them to yourself, or to another forum that deals with those issues.

With regards to the trip report - thanks for sharing Sam! Awesome pictures. Beautiful cabin crew in a beautiful aircraft. I flew to Framkfurt yesterday and was hoping to catch a glimpse of the A350 myself but she'd already departed before we arrived. Hopefully I'll be flying this bird myself in a few years.

Not only to I fly with Iran Air. I also like to spend time in Iran. This is not the first time, certainly not the last. I have known Iranians in Paris since forever. The flights are certainly an enjoyable diversion. I love their old airplanes and their old captains. Reminds me of my flights from so many years back. I can't find that here anymore.

Iranians in their homeland are a lot more free going than the Western media depicts them. The outside is just theater.
I will take Iran over the Sheikhdoms any time - includes everything, the History, traditions, lifestyle, food, artistry, talent, intelligence and also their leaders, why not. At least they are genuine. No bluff no fluff.

I have never seen any wealthy Iranians showing off their mega-yachts or parading their Bentleys and Lamborghinis in Antibes or Cannes or Monte Carlo spending their nights in the wildest night clubs of the French Riviera drunk as anything, throwing off even wilder parties on their yachts off shore to the excess. It all starts when they are offloading their flashy supercars off their mega-jets at the airport in Nice, displaying such shameless behaviours. They are such nuisance it's shocking.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5pbCjFLaXk

I will take 1000 Nouveau Russians over these people - any time.

Not forgetting the beautiful QE2 -- now renamed "New Life". This once glorious ocean liner has been rotting away hidden from public view in the Dubai Docks from when she arrived there in Nov. 2008. There is not even a Captain anymore.

I am sorry to diverge. Just answered your comments.

Great trip report, Sam. As usual, fantastic photography.

How nice that the team at QR made your and your fellow enthusiast's flight with them so special. Nice bag of gifts and mementos too.

I like the appearance of the angled seating in budiness. It seems to afford extra privacy without being constrictive. For those with window seats they can actual see out without twisting their necks backwards like in some herringbone layouts. For those in the centre seats, the inward angle seems to offer more intimacy for people travelling together.

Thanks for sharing and happy flying.

Not a big fan of Quest myself, (though I wanted a photo with him or any celebrity onboard) I think his aviaton knowledge came from extensive of flying, but certainly not an Avgeek quality.

I know one flight cannot sum it up for QR. However, I actually think QR focus well in economy. From all my economy class flight on QR, their quality is well known and to me, they're above EK and EY in the Big3.

We do have a non-signed, generic flight certificate. But from what I've heard, it is much better publicity job they did than the QR A380 inaugural few months ago.

Quoting ZKOJQ (Reply 24):

Noise level were very impressively quiet, I would say a bit quieter than A380 and much much quieter than B787. I certainly didn't feel dry in my eye or skin

Sam, two milestone replies in one day. Great  .

Quoting N178UA (Thread starter):

I would sure love to see that 1:200 model. But better still a 1:200 Etihad A380 would be unbelievable.

Quoting N178UA (Thread starter):
Many of them belong to the “First to Fly” group, which some of them have flown all 13 A380 inaugurals!

One in that group has the Residence in his achievements!

Quoting N178UA (Thread starter):
It is much quieter than the B777 and B787.

Even quieter than the 787. The 777 is noisy, period

Quoting N178UA (Thread starter):
Over Doha Skyline

The Doha Skyline seems more scenic and closer than Dubai's skyline, even though the mammoth Burj Khalifa itself dominates it all.

Quoting N178UA (Thread starter):
The curved wing!

Better than that nose and racoon eyed cockpit windows. I always felt Porter Airlines should have been the launch customer of the Airbus A350 lol

Quoting N178UA (Thread starter):
With Airbus CEO Mr Fabrice Bergier onboard

Wow!!

Quoting N178UA (Thread starter):
We spent almost an hour chatting aviation topics with Mr Al Baker, his depth of knowledge is really admirable and he has a quick wit and always come back with a smart comment! Unlike most Western media portrayed him, he is approachable, warm and single handly managed the airline from meeting new recruit, closely manage day-to-day operation and even calling customer replying their complaint personally over the phone! He is a real cult-figure. Couldn’t possibly think of another airline CEO nearly with this cult of personality.

He seemed to be content his airline is the launch customer  .

Quoting N178UA (Thread starter):
I think I am qualified to say Qatar Airways crew have best grooming and looks polished over other Middle Eastern peers as I fly a lot in the region and internationally with the Middle East big 3.

Qatar Airways crews are the best groomed. Hands down. But I wonder if it is the fact they don't wear the veil to the side which helps bring out the excellent grooming standards.

Quoting N178UA (Thread starter):
After take-off, I went up to Business Class to join a few lucky enthusiasts there.

Sam, only you could do it.

I think A350 is a real winner in this category, even quieter than the impressive A380!

Hi Sam,

great report on the 350. Lovely pictures and story as usual. Good for you that 35A became available for you, otherwise we would've miss out the pics of the great wing(let).

Shame to see 3-3-3 on an Airbus widebody. I do like Airbus 330/340 because the seating in Y, 2-4-2. This QR cabin configuration will not really attract me immediately. Then again, and I agree with MadameConcorde for this, I have no reason to bring my money to QR anymore, nor Qatar. I flew QR once, and it was a mediocre exprerience at the old DOH airport, the staff on the ground was so rude. The whole '5 star' experience was immediately gone. Rubbish.

But fair enough, onboard QR is definitely a nice experience as you proof once again here. I can only admit that.
Now, I wonder if other airlines might choose different cabin configurations for the 350's. 2-4-3 for example? ANA is operating this config on the 77W.

Regards
Eric

The A350 is definitely fit for 9 seats in a row, the cabin is definitely wider and larger than A330/340 family. I agree 2-4-3 is better but Qatar A350 3-3-3 is a lot wider than their own B787 in 3-3-3 (IMHO, B787 should be 2-4-2)
