To Île De Beauté With Air Corsica –what Else?

Mon Apr 20, 2015 4:43 pm

We planned our first visit to Corsica several months ago. Using the ferries was one option as you need a car to explore the island. However, the off-season ferry timetables were inconvenient, and we chose XK and their car rental service. A small rental car felt more carefree on Corsica’s narrow and sometimes bumpy roads.

Network and fleet info

Air Corsica flies to four airports on the island. Our goal was to explore the northern part of the island, and we booked Nice-Bastia already in late January. The cheapest fare on their web site was 188€ per person for this short hop. But hey, it was also our first flight with their “national” carrier! The car cost us 200 € from Monday to Friday.

They lost the match against PSG but came back as heroes

Our preparations also included the 2004 Jean Reno comedy L’enquête Corse where the main message seemed to be: Enjoy the stunning nature and views but don’t ask too many questions.
The excellent guidebook “Corsica: The finest coastal and mountain walks” describes 75 walks on the island –all grades.

Our trip comprised a visit to Bastia, then driving north around Cap Corse where hotels had been booked in small towns. In spite of being part of France and located just 200km or so from the mainland, the scenery is so different! Cap Corse has a stunning nature combined with a very laid-back and friendly atmosphere. But unfortunately one can see poverty, unemployment and young people leaving the villages. In April the tourist flocks have not yet arrived, and many of the hotels have just opened. On the other hand, the weather can be unstable and the high terrain in central Corsica is still covered with snow.

Welcome on board

We did two hikes, one strenuous and one easy coastal walk:
Ascent to Monte Stello (1307 m) in central Cap Corse: A popular panoramic peak, the ascent is easy but long starting from the hamlet of Pozzo. Total elevation gain was just under 1100 m, duration 6 hours (walking time).
Then a short part of the coastal trail called the Sentier des Douaniers (customs officers’ path) in the northernmost tip of Cap Corse, from Barcaggio to Tollare and back (1h 30). This section of the trail is considered the most picturesque by many.
This also happens to be my first trip report on airliners.net. We will certainly return to the island of beauty – maybe to the southern part next time!

I flew the same route 5 years ago but landed at night.

However left from Calvi. The view on the left side was beautiful flying over the town.

The only thing I disliked about Northern Corsica was that the ocean is freezzzzzzing cold.

The same in Northern Sardinia.

Yes, it's not like in the Caribbean! At the moment the sea temperature is around 14-16 degrees C -way too cold! Even so, we saw a family in the water on one of the beaches along the coastal trail.
Thanks for commenting!

Thank you for reading and commenting. It's hard to compete with the "pros "on this site with all the exotic planes, places and airlines
Cap Corse countryside is actually very verdant a bit like in Ireland -quite different compared with say Côte d'Azur

Thank you lesfalls, as you are a regular visitor in the region why not consider Corsica next time you are here! The ferries are running more frequently during the summer season, too.

MadameConcorde,

Thank you for commenting! I apologize for having messed with the pictures, most of them I have re-posted above, a few more can now hopefully be seen below.

There's two short video clips from Monte Stello and Barcaggio as well

We explored just a small part of Corsica, mainly Cap Corse. It exceeded our expectations that already were high. Our next trip will be to the southern part of the island. Any recommendations?

You are most welcome!
Maybe there is a way you can have those failed pictures off the thread.

Photo hosting sites can bring some bad surprises sometimes.

Corsica is still unpolluted place - other than yachties putting their crap in the sea. No pesticides are used on the island. The orange/mandarine/clementine orchards on the Eastern side are naturally grown. What does not go on the market (calibrating) is distributed to the locals and their friends for free or at a minimal cost.
.
High rises are not yet wasting the scenery. I hope it will never turn into a Monte Carlo with casinos and hyper luxury hotels

As for visiting other parts of the island, the road between Calvi and Porto is quite scenic with beautiful spots.like Girolata and the Scandola (they have boat tours), the Calanche of Piana, down to Cargese, a historical site with ancient Greek churches.
From there you can go on to Sagone and to Ajaccio where you can visit Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte's native home which is a national museum.

You can save the South for again another trip:

Porto Vecchio
Bonifacio
Sartene
and Propriano.

and spend time in the center of the island, the Castagniccia and all the villages. The train from Ajaccio to Bastia (or Calvi) is quite scenic. A beautiful ride.

Corsica is picking up with tourists. It's always been an Italian visitors favourite.

Also you can pick up some delicious foodies to bring home as a souvenir of your visits to the island. The road from Sarteneto Solenzara is quite scenic.

How nice to see a report featuring Corsica. As you will have discovered it is a fascinating place. Such wonderful scenery from mountains to rocky shorelines covered with low scrub. Doesn't the name of the WWII resistance, le Maquis, derive from the Corsican name for that scrubby mountainous terrain?

Bonifacio is a pleasant place for a visit, as is Sartene, as MadameConcorde has suggested. There are some very scenic parts aound les Aiguilles de Bavella as well.

Thanks for sharing,

Yes, they are of excellent quality, I always buy them when possible!

Thank you for your tips. I already have them saved between my LeGuideVert Corse!

Thank you for commenting! Yes, resistance and guerrilla movements have used the name as well. I was not aware of the different meanings of the word until recently.

Bonifacio has indeed been recommended by friends. Air Corsica has daily flights from Nice to Figaro in the south, a good option to explore that part of the island.

Nice to see Corsica and some great pictures. I was at this island last year and enjoyed my time a lot, despite way to short. Need to go there again to explore more.

The flight is a bit boring, short flighttime, ATR is such a common aircraft, but nice little airline company to fly.
