British Airways Open Day LHR, Inc. A350 Msn 002

Sat Jun 06, 2015 10:26 pm

Today I visited the British Airways Open Day at London Heathrow, in the East Engineering Base.

What a great day...really glad I went despite having a very late night last night.

I took the train from Clapham Junction to Feltham, then a bus to Hatton Cross, then walked to the event.

Spread across 2 hangars, and outdoors, the following aircraft were in attendance

BAC / Aerospatiale Concorde 102 G-BOAB
Airbus Industrie A350-941 F-WWCF
Airbus Industrie A380-841 G-XLEB
Boeing 747-436 G-CIVG
Boeing 777-336ER G-STBL
Boeing 787-8 G-ZBJB

For me, the highlight was the A350 but there was also so much other stuff to interest. I spent 5 hours there and it went by in a flash.

The A350 was great and I was privileged enough to have a visit to the cockpit and discussion with one of Airbus's test pilots (who still does occasional flying for BA to keep his 'airline hours' in). The aircraft was F-WWCF, msn 002 and it was the first with the full cabin to test the environmental control systems and conduct the initial long range proving flights with passengers. This particular aircraft had flown from Kathmandu to Paris recently on a humanitarian mission carrying a lady with a collapsed lung, they flew the whole way at 32k feet but with the cabin altitude set at 0 feet to keep her comfortable. Extraordinarily capable aircraft. Lots of advanced systems on the flight deck as you can imagine with integration and ease of use for the pilots - he demonstrated the electronic flight bag and even automated checklists (the aircraft automatically ticks off items it knows has been done). The cabin was 1-2-1 in J and 3-3-3 in Y...the latter very comfortable compared to the 787 I sat in later, although I suspect the 33-34" of legroom Airbus have put in this particular 350 won't get as far as BA's accountants!

I also had a look (again!) inside an A380 but unfortunately couldn't get into the flight deck as by the time I got there, they had closed it because so many people had been pinching items such as paperwork which would need to be replaced before the HKG flight later this evening. Some people, eh!?

I had a poke around in a 787 (G-ZBJB...nice enough in J (and the windows are nice) but I thought the cockpit was cramped and a bit old fashioned looking, and the Y seating is horrible.

There was also a 77W (G-STBL) and 744 (G-CIVG with the wifi) but didn't visit either of those.

I visited the Heritage stand which had a lot of nice memorabilia and whet my appetite for a visit to the main centre - I may arrange that for when my parents are in town as they would get such a kick out of it.

I also happened across the Panasonic stand and saw the new IFE which will be going into 18 of the 744s from the beginning of August. The screens are very nice 720p HD (and F can do 1080p if they wish) with a capacitive touchscreen (i.e. like an iPhone, no pressure required) and you can swipe and tap to get to the content. IIRC each system will have 8 Tb of storage?

I also saw the pay to order meals, the new Dubai lounge concept, the electronic bag tag (which is really cool, I am converted), some of the proposals for improving the T5 airport experience, inflated a life jacket whilst wearing it and a lot of other things. Everyone was very friendly but you really had to explore and ask questions to get the most out of the day: e.g. the Panasonic IFE stand was empty but as soon as you got talking to the guys a wealth of information was forthcoming that wasn't immediately obvious.

Admittedly if your BA events are measured by the amount of free booze possible to rinse this event isn't for you (and in fact is completely dry) but otherwise I really enjoyed myself and would thoroughly encourage anyone to go!

I would also like to thank the management and staff of BA, the former allowing very much 'open access' to a lot of their very valuable toys (I was amazed at the access we had in particular to the A350), and the latter for coming in on their days off to volunteer to make the event so successful and nice for everyone.

I believe it's still at LHR.

Hi eg77er,

Looks like you had a great time at the open day. How cool to be able to explore a very special aircraft.

The photos are brilliant and highlight how much the control of aircraft has evolved over the past few years. Which begs the question: what paperwork were people stealing? Isn't a modern flight deck supposed to be "paperless"?

I like the photo of the BA 777 tail with the EK A380 in the background. Nice contrast.

Thanks for sharing an unusual and wonderfully different trip report.

I was there too, brilliant day provided by BA, a job well done.

Nice to see all areas of the company involved, from the planes to catering and the App's area, well thought out.

The A359 being there was very cool, the 3-3-3 economy layout on the A350 is very spacious as the fuselage is some 6 inches wider than the 787. Even if the pitch is reduced, as I expect it to be, still, it will be more comfortable than a 3-3-3 layout on a 787, that is truly horrible. The 787 was designed with 2-4-2 in mind, I've flown it as that and it was lovely, 3-3-3 I won't do for sure!

Flying on my first A350 in two weeks time, really looking forward to it.

Very cool, thank you for sharing! I've only been on BA's 774 and 772 (and technically G-BOAD, parked in a museum   ) so it was nice to see the A350 and 787. The A350 looked very nice as well.
