Toronto To Warsaw- LOT Polish 787- Tight Seats!

Hi all,

Below are my pix from my flight from Toronto to Budapest via Warsaw. I am sharing this segment here as this was my first ever 787 experience and sadly it was not pleasant at all.
Even though the legroom was ok, the seat widths were very tight on the 787. As we have seen in the forum there are other complaints from the uncomfortable tights seats at 787s, which is very sad.

As soon as I sat down in my seat the armrests were pushing against my hip and having another guy next to me who was barely fitting in his seat and was pushing his armrest against my hip made it much worse. I had a very uncomfortable seat for this long 8:30 hours flight. If I knew it was going to be this uncomfortable I’d have paid for the Premium economy, which is $300 more each segment. But before disembarking at Warsaw airport, I tried the premium economy seat and it is just how economy seats on older aircrafts used to feel like. The width was just right but felt like just the Air Canada 767 or 777 cabins (before putting 10 seats instead of 9 in each row). It’s sad that they charge you this much extra and call it premium economy while in reality it is the normal economy seats people used to travel on before airlines adapt cramping passengers on these tight seats. I will try my best to avoid all 787s in the future and it’s a shame that this new plane is not comfortable at all.

However I should say that the crew were nice and professional and the meal was the best and the most fresh meal I have ever had on any route.

Overall an uncomfortable seat on LOT, but the crew were professional and the meal was nice. The segment from Warsaw to Budapest was great as it was on a LOT Embraer and they have very comfortable seats.

Hi Whitelight44,

Great trip report, especially all the photos of the terminals and the various aircraft from different airlines.

Apart from the tight seating, the onboard experience seems OK.

Great shots of Budapest too. Did you visit Gundel and try out the palacsinta?

Great TR   how was the food better then other carriers that you have flown? Was the price cheaper on LO? Would you fly again with LO?

Highly amused with the fact that you'd prefer to avoid the 787. It seems that the A350 with the 9 abreast configuration is actually more comfortable.
The Airbus A330 2-4-2 layout still remains the best option to me and I'm very glad to know they will continue with the A330NEO in future.

I like to LOT colours. The interior looks fresh and inviting though.

Thanks for the review and your many beautiful pictures. Yes, the seating on a 787 3-3-3 config is very tight and your experience confirms what we have gone through.

Some questions.

1) Was there an IFE box? I can't really tell from the pictures, though it looked like there wasn't any.

2) What camera do you use?

Nice TR, lovely pictures.

LOT interior looks fabulous, blue colour is so sharp and refreshing..food looks okay too. Portion could be little big but seems you had overall pleasant experience.

Enjoyed reading this TR! Great pictures of Budapest... going to have to add that to my list of places to visit as well! Overall the LOT 787 cabin looks pretty nice, I like the color scheme but sadly I keep reading reports that concur with yours about the seats being slim on 787s... thanks to the 3-3-3. The plane was supposed to be configured 2-4-2 but the airlines discovered that 3-3-3- fits with the narrower seats....   

Still, overall a very nice report!

Thank you for a great report, lovely pics from Budapest as well.

LOT has some good fares from Israel to north america, and flying the 787 is tempting, but considering your report they won't be the first choise. Crowded seats on 9+ hours flight isn't something to write home about, even if on a new place.

I am shocked about the Dreamliner. A lot of complaints about the seats in Y.

I want to go back to Budapest. I was there in 1972 and it looks so much nicer.

Also more places to visit now.

I did not get a chance to go to Gundel as Budapest had many nice places to see, more than I had thought and we were running short on time. I wish I had stayed there longer.

Hi Lesfalls,

The food was very fresh with great taste. I found a rather good price for $850 Canadian from YYZ- WAW-BUD and coming back from PRG-WAW-YYZ.

THnaks so much mh330. I'd love to try the A350 as it seems more comfortable. Me, too. I'm very glad that they are going with the A330 NEO. That is one of my most favorite planes.

1) Actually I did not see any IFE box near where I was seating. For sure it was not under my seat.
2) My camera is a simple point and shoot Sony DSC-WX100. I use the Pop setting when I take pictures and I edit them by using the photo editing program that is called Irfan View which you can download online

Thank you so much. Yes, I personally love the blue colors too and it made such a nice ambiance in the cabin.
Yes, the portions were a bit too small and wish they were bigger. Overall beside the tight seat, it was a very nice experience

Thanks very much. Yes, Budapest is one of the best places I have been to and people were very friendly and nice too  

I wish airlines never did this. I hope their reviews go down and they care enough to change these tight seats.

Thanks so much El Al   Yes, you are right, I don't think many 787s around are any more comfortable so if you can travel with another plane model would be better especially for a long flight from Israel, you certainly don't want to be cramped in the tight seats.

Sorry to hear this, but perhaps this is only just because of the way LOT configured their aircraft. I can't imagine every operator of the 787 is this way.

Food looks pretty tasty; I've seen several reports in the past of LOT and the food didn't look as good on those other flights as on your flight, so perhaps they've improved their catering quite a bit.

Thanks for sharing your trip with us. I'm flying through YYZ soon so I was glad that you shared some pictures of it. I really like the number signs near the gate. But I'll be in Terminal 3 so I'm not sure if they will be the same. Also, its unfortunate that you did not find the 787 comfortable. I hear this is also the case with BA's 787. It seems like while the 787 is suppose to be a very comfortable plane, airlines are messing that up by doing a 3-3-3 seat layout. Hopefully they'll switch it to 2-4-2 to make it more comfortable.

Also the pictures of the city were lovely.

I think that the 787s that are 9 across all should be as tight as the one for LOT. Isn't this the case? If there are other airlines who use 787s with 8 across I'm sure they'd be more comfortable. I just have to look up and see which airlines have the more comfortable setting of 2-4-2 787s.

Thanks so much rta. Toronto's terminal 1 is very nice and terminal 3 is a bit older but it is very nice too. They are revitalizing it now so you may see some construction work going on in it, but the gate area looks nice. Even the seats are more dated and do not have the lounge room seat looks as terminal 1. Yes, I hope so too that airlines shift back to the 2-4-2 seating but I don't know if it will happen or not.
