Garuda, Business Class, MEL-DPS-CGK

Fri Aug 21, 2015 3:43 pm

Hi guys, as anticipated in my recent trip report on Air France, La Premiere Designer Suite, Jakarta to Singapore (click to view Air France, La Premiere Designer Suite, CGK-SIN (by ExpatFlyer Aug 18 2015 in Trip Reports) ) the Air France flight was the last of 3 connecting flights I took last Thursday 13 August from Melbourne to Jakarta via Denpasar, flying with Garuda, and onward from Jakarta to Singapore, with Air France, at the end of a 1-day biz trip to Melbourne.

flight: Garuda GA 719
route: Melbourne-Tullamarine to Denpasar
aircraft: A330-200
seat 10K
class: Business Class
cabin load: 16/36
schedule: dep. Melbourne at 9am - arr. Denpasar at 1:15pm am (6h 15')

So on Thu 13 Aug, after an early morning transfer to Melbourne airport, check-in, and passport control,

I head straight to the Qantas Business Class lounge which is the one available for Garuda Business Class passengers

http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Garuda%20Business%20Class%20MEL-DPS-CGK/IMG_2000.jpg

A great lounge, developed around several different rooms to cater different needs (business, relax, family space) and providing a complete full hot breakfast buffet displayed in different areas and with different food counters, along with an amazing array of excellent Australian wines

http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Garuda%20Business%20Class%20MEL-DPS-CGK/IMG_2001.jpg

The sausages and the scone were delicious and I accompanied them with a glass of Australian sparkling

http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Garuda%20Business%20Class%20MEL-DPS-CGK/IMG_2007.jpg

Then I moved to the exclusive dining area of the lounge, where a barista was at work preparing espresso coffees and cappuccinos, for a good double espresso and another flute of Australian bubbles

And time for lunch.
The lunch menu offers 3 selections defined as Indonesian Warmth, Japanese Delicacy and Modern European Edge.
I opt for the Modern European Edge which presents 2 selections for the appetiser, 3 selections for the main course, plus cheese board and 2 selections for dessert, and my choice goes for:

Pan-grilled marinated herb prawns with heirloom salad and roasted red pepper aioli
***
Pan-seared Tasmanian salmon, saffron veloute tomato and lemon-thyme tart
***
Chef's cheese board with King island double brie and South Cape smoked cheddar
***
Vanilla ice cream with strawberry coulis

So let's start with the appetiser: Pan-grilled marinated herb prawns with heirloom salad and roasted red pepper aioli

http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Garuda%20Business%20Class%20MEL-DPS-CGK/IMG_2100.jpg

Hi ExpatFlyer, another fantastic report! GA J from MEL to DPS looks fantastic. The food presentation looks impressive, and much better than what can be found on some international F (looks miles above US carriers). The domestic J meal also looks really good. The bubbles also look very impressive and it sounds like the crew were eager to keep those flutes full.

Hi Coal, thank you again for your message, much appreciated.

Indeed I do enjoy both flying and trip reporting.
I'm very keen in checking all details especially on the on board dining experience which is an essential component of the flight experience, especially on longer flights.

Also you are right as the cabin crew were quite generous in pouring down that great Billecard-Salmon Brut Rose champagne.

I have to admit I've been positively impressed by Garuda on this Australia trip.

My only other experience with Garuda goes back to some 30 years ago flying twice on their Rome/Abu Dhabi/Bangkok/Singapore/Jakarta/Denpasar route (I loved multi-stop flights), flown with the B747 in business class, and the business class was in the front cabin of the Jumbo Jet and I remember I was seated on row 1 on both flights.
Good old memories of a bygone era when flying was completely different from today.

I'll give Garuda a try again when i'm flying back again to Melbourne, Australia, in a couple of weeks.

All the best and have a great week-end,
Expat Flyer

I didnt know they are 5 star ranked, since when? find it annying their title applocation in middle of aircraft on 747 and A330 fleet, should have been near firsy exit like on all others types shown in the magazine's fleet page.

Fantastic trip report. I want to go to Bali.

What airline is that red ATR? I have never heard of it.

Apparently there are 60 airlines in Indonesia? Most are banned in Europe.

The Airliner magazine at your seat made me giggle.

Garuda looks great. Delta awards allow flights on Garuda but I don't think it's easy to get seats.

Thanks.

Hi 777way, Garuda joined the club of Skytrax 5-star airlines on Dec 2014, along with ANA, Asiana, Cathay Pacific, Hainan Airlines, Qatar Airways and Singapore Airlines

Hi Lychemsa, the red ATR is operated by Wings Air, with Lion Air as parent company, and the livery marks the delivery of the 50th ATR 72-600 for Lion Group.

The August issue of the Airliners World magazine has an interesting article on Indonesian airlines: Growth at any cost? Deregulating Indonesia's airlines.

Hi mh330fc, thank you, much appreciated.

indeed the Garuda business class and the in-flight dining have been a pleasant experience.

Really enjoyed the photos, not gonna lie.

Garuda is a great airline. I took my wife and daughter to Bali in Jan 2014 at an amazing price in J class from Tokyo-Narita. The A332 was wonderful but the B77W from Jakarta-Tokyo was even better in Business class. You should at least spent a day or two in Kuta. Such a wonderful place.

out of curiosity, the plates are fine bone china by Royal Dolton but ... some are for Emirates and not for Garuda

I thought it looked familiar. Mix up at the cleaners or GA buying seconds?

Great trip report with excellent photos, especially of the meals. It is also good to see that you were able to capture shots of other aircraft along the way.

The cabin crew sure were generous with the rosé prior to departure. Cheers!

I am happy to see that Garuda continues to maintain its standard post the Satar era. I really enjoyed all my flights with Garuda especially its medium and long haul business class service.

Thank you for such wonderful photos especially on the food which look delicious. It seemed that you really enjoyed your flight. Looking forward to your next trip report on Garuda.

Hi WearyDrover, indeed they remained generous for the entire flight, and along with the rose champagne the wine list was very interesting featuring 3 great French white wines, 2 red Australian and 1 Italian wine.

Hi GASQKL, you got it right as I did enjoy the in-flight lunch which was well presented, delicious, perfectly cooked and rich in taste.
