To MIA And TLH: AA 319/E75/ten-day-old 738

Sat Aug 29, 2015 3:12 pm

Yesterday I did a MSY-MIA-TLH-MIA-MSY day trip on AA/AA Eagle. The purpose of this trip was to really just add a new airport to my list...TLH being the airport. I've driven through TLH quite a few times and even passed through there on the train, but I'd never flown there. Let's just say the airport is in need of a refurbishment to bring it out of the 1980s.

AA was fine as usual. I happen to like the new A319 even though it gets a lot of grief from frequent flyers. The power ports, AVOD, and comfortable seats make up for the tight pitch, IMO. It's a nice addition to the AA fleet and, as much as I like the M80s from a pax perspective, getting on a new plane is a nice treat every now and then. Transiting in MIA was easy as always . We boarded the E75 up to TLH from the ramp, which is always a treat. MIA-TLH was basically a one hour roller coaster ride due to the many storms over Florida. The flight was empty...maybe 28 people total? TLH itself was...interesting. It was retro. Functional of course, but I've been to many smaller airports that are far nicer. I wonder if the city has a plan to refurbish the terminal? Overall I'm glad I checked it out. The employees were very nice, if anything. The ride back to MSY was on a 10-day-old 737. It was probably the nicest 737 I've ever flown in. The F seats were comfortable, mood lit cabin w/ Sky interior was open and spacious, and the PTV's were huge. In fact they were the largest I've ever experienced. Fantastic service by the F/A in charge of F, as well. Upon landing, she came around, shook everyone's hand, and thanked them for their business. She probably came around five times during the 1h40m flight to offer refills and to hand out more snacks. Truly top notch service.

Great report, don't see too many MIA-TLH reports. I really enjoyed seeing Eastern back on the board at Miami, I have fond memories of flying Eastern at Miami. Of A319 and 738 which did you prefer?

I too have fond memories of EA. My first flight ever was on an Eastern 727-100 between MSY and IAH. It's great to see the name/logo back in the air.

I'd say they are about even. I like the performance of the 319 and it looks really good with the Sharklets. The 738 feels like a flying tank, which is a good thing...I've always had the sense that it gives you a better ride in rough air.

Hi SunsetLimited

I enjoyed reading your post. Looks like an interesting trip with three different types. Did the 738 still have a new "smell" about it?

Some cool photos too. I like the shots of the wings and clouds, as well as the shadow cast over the trees.

Regards, Weary.

It did. You have to love that smell.

Great report, don't see too many MIA-TLH reports.

Agree - great to see a report on TLH. I grew up in TLH and if you think the current airport is stuck in the 80's you should see GNV. It's like a shoebox and very 80's. I do agree that TLH could use a makeover, though with the limited service it gets now I'm not sure it's economical. I remember not that long ago (circa 2000-2003) when TLH was on fire. Delta was all mainline to ATL, plus connection flights to MCO, FLL, MIA, DFW, CVG and JFK. DL (mix of mainline and connection) had ~30 flights a day. Plus US to CLT and FL to ATL & TPA.

TLH-MIA on AA used to be all E145's, so seeing the 175's on it is a good sign. Friday evening flights are probably lite in general, but nice to see the upgauge. Hoping one day they put CR7's on the TLH-DFW flights.

Great trip report, thanks for this one!

Funny coincidence that my girlfriend was aboard this very B738 (N976NN) just 24 hours later from MIA to PTY.

Interesting report. I was wondering why anyone would want to fly to TLH for the hell of it. The airport has been a white elephant for years. TLH's glory days are far behind now. The last time the airport had any significant traffic was in 1990/91. It's best days were the 1980s when one could see several EA/DL and later Piedmont flights serving the airport. USAir frequently used TLH for "touch and go" flight crew training for their F-28s on Friday and Saturday late evening from 22:00-00:00 hrs.
In the Fall of 1990 Delta had several crew training flights fly the pattern from DC-9s, 727s, 757s, to L1011s. I recall seeing one of each one late morning flying the pattern for Runway 18/36.
TLH has always had a problem getting someone to fly there. They city even tried to subsidize Air Tran to serve the airport but they pulled out after a few months. TLH will unfortunately never become anything more than what it is now.

Thanks for sharing. I actually think that despite not having much of a refresh, the terminal at TLH is not that bad. But I do agree it has not been refreshed or upgraded in a looooong time.

My TR on MIA-TLH on an ERJ 7 years ago shows the terminal in the same state (and this may have been one of the other few MIA-TLH reports):

Maybe, but then are you suggesting there shouldn't be an airport in TLH at all? How would all the FSU and FAMU students, as well as gov't officials get in and out of town?

I actually don't see it being that bad now compared to 10yrs ago. Back then, DL had a stranglehold on the place, AA didn't fly there, FL had pulled out due to pressure from DL, and US only had service to CLT.

I've seen worse. I actually liked how the windows were angled. It did look like one of the restaurants in the area near the TSA checkpoint was closed for good.
