Singapore Airlines, Business Class, KUL-SIN-MXP

Sat Oct 03, 2015 8:57 pm

Hi guys, this is the part 1 of a multi-stop trip report about my moving back to sunny Florida from Singapore.

After 6 years spent in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand I'm returning home in Miami, although with our Asia Pacific HQ based in Singapore I will continue to fly back to the Lion City at least once every quarter.

So this trip report covers the 2 flights flown last Wednesday from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore and from Singapore to Milan, and next Thursday I'll continue onward to Miami.

For this trip, going against all my preferences for always flying with SkyTeam, I decided to fly Singapore Airlines (as I only experienced SQ on shorter regional flights from/to Singapore and Beijing, Maldives and Denpasar).

So let's start with the first flight, the short hop between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, flown with SilkAir on Wed 30 Sep 2015:

flight: SilkAir MI 325
route: Kuala Lumpur-KLIA to Singapore-Changi
aircraft: A320
seat 2A
class: Business Class
cabin load: 7/12
schedule: dep. Kuala Lumpur-KLIA at 12 noon - arr. Singapore-Changi at 1pm (1h)

Quick check-in at the SilkAir business class counter, fast track for the passport control, short train ride to departing terminal and onward to the Silver Kris lounge

http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Singapore%20Airlines%20Business%20Class%20KUL-SIN-MXP/IMG_2630.jpg

A quick visit to the SilverKris lounge at KLIA which is quite basic, with no style, no interior decor, and the only positive aspect is the view on the tarmac:

http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Singapore%20Airlines%20Business%20Class%20KUL-SIN-MXP/IMG_2626.jpg

Flight delayed by fifteen minutes and boarding via gate C6.
The SilkAir aircraft operating this flight is an A320 featuring 12 seats in the business class across 3 rows with a 2-2 layout.

http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Singapore%20Airlines%20Business%20Class%20KUL-SIN-MXP/IMG_2636.jpg

Orange juice served as a welcome drink upon boarding and a quick look at the in-flight magazines

Then right after taking off the cabin attendant walks around the cabin taking the orders for the snack served onboard by selecting between a ciabatta with chicken & lime cilantro, or croissant with scrambled egg & roasted tomato:
http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Singapore%20Airlines%20Business%20Class%20KUL-SIN-MXP/IMG_2639.jpg

And the snack is quickly served

http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Singapore%20Airlines%20Business%20Class%20KUL-SIN-MXP/IMG_2647.jpg

After landing at Changi T2 I take the skytrain to T3 and straight to the SilverKris Lounge:

http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Singapore%20Airlines%20Business%20Class%20KUL-SIN-MXP/IMG_2703.jpg

The lounge offers an ample selection of food and wines, and at almost 2pm it is lunch time starting with a glass of Charles Heidsieck champagne

http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Singapore%20Airlines%20Business%20Class%20KUL-SIN-MXP/IMG_2662.jpg

and followed by viewing the food stations for lunch:

http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Singapore%20Airlines%20Business%20Class%20KUL-SIN-MXP/IMG_2686.jpg

I tested and tasted the tagliatelle with zucchini and shrimps but the pasta was well overcooked instead of being al dente, resulting in something uneatable (at least for an Italian taste), while the chicken cacciatore was juicy and tasted great and accompanied with a great New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc

http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Singapore%20Airlines%20Business%20Class%20KUL-SIN-MXP/IMG_2683.jpg

http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Singapore%20Airlines%20Business%20Class%20KUL-SIN-MXP/IMG_2689.jpg

Time flies and at around 4:30pm the lounge team starts passing around serving the afternoon tea:

http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Singapore%20Airlines%20Business%20Class%20KUL-SIN-MXP/IMG_2704.jpg

My selection goes for a scone and apricot pie and Earl Grey tea:

http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Singapore%20Airlines%20Business%20Class%20KUL-SIN-MXP/IMG_2706.jpg

Then we get to dinner time and the entire food selection on display is geared towards dinner and supper
http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Singapore%20Airlines%20Business%20Class%20KUL-SIN-MXP/IMG_2715.jpg

Baked fish fillets, cheese selection and the mandatory sweet side

http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Singapore%20Airlines%20Business%20Class%20KUL-SIN-MXP/IMG_2717.jpg

The day has gone by between emails, follow-ups and a 9pm conf call with the Florida office (where it's 9am) while enjoying in-between the great Silver Kris lounge and eventually it's boarding time for the 2am flight to Milan via gate B2

flight: Singapore Airlines SQ 368
route: Singapore-Changi to Milan-Malpensa
aircraft: B777-300ER
seat 20A
class: Business Class
cabin load: 40/42
schedule: dep. Singapore-Changi at 2:05am - arr. Milan-Malpensa at 8:45am (12h 40')

http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Singapore%20Airlines%20Business%20Class%20KUL-SIN-MXP/IMG_2721.jpg

http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Singapore%20Airlines%20Business%20Class%20KUL-SIN-MXP/IMG_2723.jpg

The Business Class on the Singapore Airlines Boeing B777-300ER displays 42 seats in a 1-2-1 layout, with rows 11 and 12 in a separated section right after the First Class cabin, and rows 14-22 in the next section.

A smiling greeting upon boarding the aircraft and I walk to my seat 20A

Still on the ground and the f/a comes along offering a glass of Taittinger Brut Millesime 2007 which I enjoy while reading the menu presenting the supper and breakfast selections, the in-flight delectables, the wine list, the coffee selection by Illy, and the tea selection by TWG

Anyway when i booked my flight on the SQ website I also made my selection for dinner and breakfast via the Book the Cook service.

And taking off from Changi
http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Singapore%20Airlines%20Business%20Class%20KUL-SIN-MXP/IMG_2757.jpg

Then after the take off the cabin crew passes along distributing eye-shades, socks and slippers (there's no dedicated amenity kit), and the next round of champagne with warm nuts

Dinner time, at 3am, starting with an appetizer of crabmeat salad with avocado, radish, mesclun and cilantro oil:

For the main course i selected the classic Lobster Termidor from the Book the Cook menu available online, and here we go:

http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Singapore%20Airlines%20Business%20Class%20KUL-SIN-MXP/IMG_2796.jpg

http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Singapore%20Airlines%20Business%20Class%20KUL-SIN-MXP/IMG_2811.jpg

Well, the only thing i can say about this lobster dish is: amazingly full of taste

Next is the selection of cheese with red cheddar, camembert and blue stilton, accompanied with a glass of Marchesi De Frescobaldi Nipozzano Chianti Rufina Riserva 2010:

http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Singapore%20Airlines%20Business%20Class%20KUL-SIN-MXP/IMG_2816.jpg

http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Singapore%20Airlines%20Business%20Class%20KUL-SIN-MXP/IMG_2817.jpg

and concluding with a chocolate mocha cake with vanilla sauce:

Well past 4am, Singapore time, and after dinner why not viewing a movie? so here we go with Jurassic World:
http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Singapore%20Airlines%20Business%20Class%20KUL-SIN-MXP/IMG_2790.jpg

And finally sleeping time, and turning the seat into a very comfortable bed:
http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Singapore%20Airlines%20Business%20Class%20KUL-SIN-MXP/IMG_2823.jpg

Resting well, and after few hours of sound sleep we are flying over Iran, and time for a walk to the galley

http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Singapore%20Airlines%20Business%20Class%20KUL-SIN-MXP/IMG_2848.jpg

Why not a mid-flight snack? from the delectable menu I select a ciabatta with grilled pumpkin and peppers, along with a good espresso coffee, and ... served in bed:

http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Singapore%20Airlines%20Business%20Class%20KUL-SIN-MXP/IMG_2858.jpg

http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Singapore%20Airlines%20Business%20Class%20KUL-SIN-MXP/IMG_2863.jpg

Another couple of hours of sleep and we are somewhere over Bulgaria and Romania, and it's breakfast time starting with a selection of sliced water melon and pomelo and blueberry muesli:

http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Singapore%20Airlines%20Business%20Class%20KUL-SIN-MXP/IMG_2878.jpg

http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx192/AF-KL/Singapore%20Airlines%20Business%20Class%20KUL-SIN-MXP/IMG_2889.jpg

Then, as main course, I selected the Grilled Angus Beef Burger via the Book the Book service online:

Well, over 12 hours of flight, and close to landing at Milan-Malpensa airport on a sunny morning this past Thursday Oct 1st:

Overall great flight, very comfortable seat, good food, although I found the cabin crew acting quite robotic while performing the service and not engaging with the passengers.

Next week I’ll be flying to sunny Florida and will later post the continuation of this trip report.

Until then feel free to read my other Trip Reports:

Hi ExpatFlyer.

What wonderful photos. The meals look decidedly eatable.

It seems that SQ still leads the field in many ways. On many airlines meals in J are on a tray, but here they are served individually, more like in F.

Thanks for sharing.

Hi Lesfalls, thank you, much appreciated.

As stated the cabin load was 40/42 with only 2 available seats in a cabin featuring 42 business class seats.

Enjoy the week-end

It seems that SQ still leads the field in many ways. On many airlines meals in J are on a tray, but here they are served individually, more like in F.

Hi Weary, thank you for your comments, much appreciated.

Indeed SQ leads, and way ahead, the in-flight service, and the J service tends to feel more that of a fine dining restaurant, especially with their bespoke Book the Cook selection where you can select your own main course instead of taking the standard manu.

The Air France new Business Class service still remains my favorite long-haul business class (see my TR: Air France, New Business Class, SIN-CDG (by ExpatFlyer Jun 30 2015 in Trip Reports)) but the SQ in-flight experience was really great.

The only negative aspects on this SQ flight were a seat showing signs of wear and tear, and the cabin crew performing more of a routine, calling passengers by family name at any moment but missing completely any form of interaction, quite robotic indeed.

Anyway I will want to try the SQ J service on the A380 the next time I'll fly to Singapore, and think of testing SQ 11 routing LAX/NRT/SIN.

All the best

I'm complementing my TR with some additional pics:

My travel companion, seated in 19A, ordered "poached egg served with hollandaise sauce" for breakfast via the online Book the Cook service, and this is how this plate looked like:

The Book the Cook service by Singapore Airlines really elevates the in-flight dining experience to the next level by offering a great selection for the main course and you can have a preview of these world class meals on the Book the Cook webpage at http://www.singaporeair.com/en_UK/flying-with-us/bookthecooklanding/

All the best

Thanks for the TR and all the best in Miami, all these pics are making me hungry now...

I arrived to Singapore this morning on SQ from Munich and was comparing our route to yours, we took a much farther north way flying over Yangon and Koh Samui on approach to Changi, we barely flew over water on the Bay of Bengal, something I havent experienced (or noticed) before when travelling from Europe to SIN, not sure if this northern routing had to do with weather in this region or what, but caught my attention this time...
