Vietnam Airlines 787 From SGN-HAN-SGN

Thu Oct 29, 2015 11:20 am

Hello Everyone! Long time reader on A.Net but first time posting a thread. I'm new at this so go easy on me!

Introduction:
I'm a Vietnamese-American living in Southern California. I often travel back and forth from the states to Vietnam visiting my family and for work. like most people on here, I'm also an aircraft enthusiast. I have many friends and family who works for Vietnam Airlines. My wife has worked for Vietnam Airlines(Tiags) for over five years. I naturally follow VN operations closely. When I heard VN was ordering the 787, seven or eight years ago(I don't remember exactly), I was very excited. Then came the news that they are going to be one of the first A350 operators, I just went crazy. I followed both aircraft development very closely. I even went to Everett and took the Boeing factory tour back in April of this year to see the first VN 787 (VN-A861) being assembled. I begged them to take a photo of me and this aircraft to show off to my VN friends, but they flat out refused. I wanted to be there when VN-A861 went for its first flight but I had no idea what Boeing's flight test schedule was like. While this was going on, Airbus was readying VN's first A350 (VN-A886). My wife gave me some inside info about the first revenue flight for these two aircrafts. She said they will first be used for domestic flights from SGN to HAN. I told her it would be awesome to get the chance to fly on both VN 787 and A350. She suggested that we fly from SGN-HAN on a 787 and from HAN-SGN on a A350 or vice versa. She also told me that we have to do it quickly before VN start these aircraft on international flights. So with inside info, she was able to booked us on flight VN264 SGN-HAN on a 787, and VN267 HAN-SGN on a A350. The reason I say "inside info" is because VN were putting their 777 and A330 on this route as well, so she had solid info on flights that will use the 787 and A350. However she warned me that VN's single A350(at that time) have had a lot of technical issues and were being grounded, so therefore it's a 50/50 chance we may or may not get to fly it, whereas their three 787 were on schedule. The plan is to fly from SGN-HAN on a 787 and stay for six days to visit all the point of interest of North Vietnam and fly back HAN-SGN on a A350.

Flight Info:

Date: SEPT-14, 2015

After we landed. We took a taxi into Hanoi "old quarters" and checked into a hotel. For the next four days, we went to the mountain town of Sapa. Then to Ha Long Bay and and area called Trang An. These two site are under Unesco World Heritage sites.

We had a wonderful time exploring the north's many famous points of interest, but then it was time to go home. We checked out of the hotel and took a taxi to Noi Bai International Airport (HAN). Our flight VN267 was at 20:10. To my great disappointment, my wife informed me that VN had bumped the A350 to an earlier flight VN256, leaving one hour earlier and replaced a 787 on flight VN267. She went to the counter and tried to switch our flight to VN256, but they told her that there were no seat available on that flight. She did not know why they switched aircraft, so it looked like we're going for a ride on the 787 again..that was a bummer! The aircraft would be the second VN 787 VN-A862. My wife tells me that down in SGN, they are experiencing severe thunderstorm and heavy rain, but managed to depart on time.

VN first A350 VN-A886..this was supposed to be our aircraft but it was bumped up 1 hour early as VN256..bummer! I guess I can use the opportunity to take photos of it while waiting for my flight....

As we approached SGN, the captain informed us that there is a huge rain cell over the airport so he is going to make a big circle out to sea and let the storm cell past. The night sky outside were a sight to behold. Lighting flashes going off like crazy. I never seen so much lighting flashes in my life. As we approach the airport, we encounter lots of turbulences. The aircraft was bobbing up and down and shaking sideways. With the cabin lights dimmed, you can see the lighting flashes coming through the large dreamliner's windows light a strobe light of a disco! We landed safely in the rain and taxed to the gate. The flight was about twenty minutes late due to the pilot circling around the storm. Wow..a real test for the Dreamliner and the flight crew!

Here is the video I shot inside VN Dreamliner going through a thunderstorm approaching SGN. It's a long video, but check out the crazy lighting strikes!

Very nice!

The VN livery sure suits the A350 and 787 nicely, I actually purchased 1:400 scale models of both the 787 and A350

Fantastic pictures of Vietnam, I have many friends who have travelled recently and loved the country, perhaps I should visit too in the future

What´s with the strange markings on the cockpit area of VN-A862?

Hi Tankdriver,

Welcome to Anet and congratulations on your first trip report. How fortunate to have some "inside" info when it comes to booking flights.

The 787 looks good in VN's livery and the legroom where you sat is great.

Thanks for the beautiful photos of Sapa and Trang An. The scenery is fantastic.

Thanks for sharing.

Sounds like an interesting jaunt. Great photos too. Hopefully you'll be able to fly the A350 soon, it's fortunate that both types are in operation with VN.

I would have thought that the handset would have a keyboard built in to take advantage of the various features of modern IFE systems. Instead it's a game controller. All play and no work!

Great trip report! I've been doing SGN-HAN with VN quite often lately, flying on both 787 and 350. I booked myself 3 times for the Boeing 777 and all 3 times, aircraft changed to other aircraft types. I got to try again for the 777. Hope you have gotten the A350.

I will be trying my luck for the airline's 777, wish me luck!

Cheers,
VN-A863

Do you know if VN will ever fly to the U.S.A. I would imagine their would be a good sized market due to the amount of business that is already done between both countries.

Here is a link from Vietnam Airlines website regarding the direct flight to the U.S.
http://www.vietnamairlines.travel/news/vietnam-airlines-expects-open-direct-fights-us

Boeing is helping Vietnam to achieve Level 1 of aviation safety standards of the FAA which is required for direct flight to the U.S. I think this has something to do with Boeing trying to sell VN the 777-8X. If VN is allowed to flight directly to the U.S., they would need bigger and long range aircraft to replace their ageing long haul fleet.

Nice report! VN are a great airline. Alas when I visited the country they only had the 772s and 321s on their internal flights.

Thanks for the report!
Me and my girlfriend will visit Vietnam next October, we will land in HAN and depart two weeks later from SGN (with QR). Do you know if VN is still using the 787 or A350 on their domestic routes?
It would be cool to fly one of them in case we don't follow the coast using bus rides..
Thanks again
