Meeting The Singapore Girls – ZRH-SIN-BOM In SQ C

Sun Nov 08, 2015 1:17 am

As explained in my recent trip report ( At Putin’s Show Room - Maks Airshow 2015 (by zolagola Sep 28 2015 in Trip Reports) ), when my father-in-law turned 60, we planned a visit to the bi-annual MAKS airshow near Moscow, Russia.

As he had never flown the A380 but is really fascinated with this aircraft, I secretly tried to come up with an itinerary which would allow us to fly a leg on the Super-Jumbo. After endless days of researching, calculating I eventually had a plan – and a crazy itinerary that only Avgeeks would come up with: going from Zurich to Singapore on the SQ A380 and then to Moscow via Bangkok on TG.

A few months after this was all booked, TG decided to cancel the BKK-DME flights so I was forced to look for new options again. And eventually found these, though not preferred we would now route through India on the way to Moscow (which meant we also had to apply for an Indian visa).

The trip was extreme to start with (spending 25+ hours in the air just to get from ZRH to DME) and during it we had to deal with a few curve balls which added to the travellers’ tales we can tell now from our trip. But let´s start with the first part which went rather smooth, here is the routing this trip report will cover (I´ll publish the 2nd part of the trip to Moscow later):

To make things even better, I had not told my father-in-law about the routing upfront, he was under the impression we would only fly FRA-ZRH-DME.

The trip started early in the morning in Frankfurt, this 24-year-old B735 called ‘Bad Nauheim’ (D-ABIW) took us to Zurich

Arrival into Zurich was on time and after passing passport control we boarded the underground train to get to the E gates in the mid-field terminal where the long haul flights depart from

SIN%252520Aug2015-014.JPG"/>

It was time for breakfast so we headed straight to the Panorama Lounge to enjoy some ‘Gipfeli’ (Swiss croissants). The lounge was not very crowded which was quite pleasant.

Plenty of drink options at the Panorama Lounge, but overall quality offered was only average

The biggest treat of the lounge however (at least from an Avgeek point of view) is the outdoor terrace which lets you get close to the Apron action, so first I´ll treat you to some impressions from the roughly 4 hours we spent there

But let´s now focus on the main character of the day. We were early enough to see ‘SQ346 Super’ touch down on RWY 14 and taxi past us to the gate

It was parked at gate E67 and so we went downstairs to take a closer look

At this point, my father-in-law still didn´t know we would fly to BOM via SIN, he still thought we would go to Moscow (our final destination) with a direct flight. I did intend to just hand him the boarding pass (which I had managed to hide from him since our departure in Frankfurt in the morning) when boarding started and capture his face on camera for the rest of the family to enjoy. Yet, things played out differently – the moment we stepped out of the lounge, a speaker announcement was made: “Mr … and Mr …, having arrived from Frankfurt and continuing on to Singapore on SQ345, please see an agent at gate E53. It turned out they needed to check our visa, so my travel companion now knew he would fly the A380, yet it still took a few minutes for this to settle with him.

SIN%252520Aug2015-063.JPG "/>

Just before boarding started, I told him we would not spent the 12 hours in cattle class but have a bit more comfort and he was both relieved and excited. It was my first flight on SQ since 2002 (back then they were still serving champagne in Y) so I was equally excited

Seat 12A

The A380 barely visible due to the three jet bridges attached

SIN%252520Aug2015-068.JPG "/>

Using the upper jetbridge, we were greeted friendly at the door and directed left. First impression of the forward C cabin with the sofa-style seats.

SIN%252520Aug2015-071.JPG"/>

My seat 12A – huge screen and lots of storage space. You could see the plane was five years old, the seat did look somewhat worn already (but not excessively). I did not opt for the first row (11) as there is a missing window in that row. 2007 Taittinger Brut Millésimé was served as pre-departure drink.

SIN%252520Aug2015-080.JPG"/>

The seats are very secluded and the 1-2-1 layout of SQ ensures maximum privacy - in contrast, other airlines use a 2-2-2 (LH, QF, AF,..), 2-3-2 (BA) or even 2-4-2 (EY) layout for their C cabin on the A380

SIN%252520Aug2015-079.JPG"/>

Seat controls – you could not turn the seat gradually into a 180 decline, instead the back of the seat was flipped over manually by the FA to get a flat bed

SIN%252520Aug2015-081.JPG"/>

SQ’s philosophy is to spend money only where they think it makes sense – and amenity kits do not make this category, hence you only receive socks, slippers and an eye shade (rest rooms are usually well stocked with tooth brush etc). I find this decision an unfortunate one as I believe amenity kits are a great way to advertise your airline (as e.g. in case of the Rimowa kits in LH First). And cost can´t be an argument really – I´m pretty sure various firms would pay money for the chance to promote their products to premium class travellers.

SIN%252520Aug2015-082.JPG"/>

Noise cancelling headphones – unfortunately these did not work properly, also second pair I requested had only one side working from time to time, so not the greatest joy watching movies

SIN%252520Aug2015-083.JPG"/>

The crew did meet the (high) expectations I had, after all the image of the Singapore Girl is like a trademark and represents the high service standards of the airline. And the crew on this flight was no different. First of all, there were lots of them and always ready when you needed them. They did address you by name, a basic but still impressing gesture. And in case of issues, they were quick to do their utmost to resolve it – pretty early in the flight, my IFE stopped working so I asked the FA to reboot. She did that instantly and later even came back twice to check everything is still OK. Well done, SQ.

SIN%252520Aug2015-086.JPG"/>

With a slight delay we taxied out and lined up on RWY 16. If you would like to see the take-off as well as some cabin impressions, take a look at my video on Youtube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=XN2W7Dl1MA0

SIN%252520Aug2015-088.JPG"/>

Whilst I love aircraft with proper sound, the smooth and silent take-off run of the A380 always fascinates me (captured well in above video)

I spent some time investigating the cocktail section - I ‘only’ managed to sample four during the flight but enjoyed all

Number One (for obvious reasons) was a Singapore Sling though also the SQ signature cocktail (Silver Kris Sling) I tried later did make it on my ‘recommended’ list

I had used the “book your cook” option and pre-ordered my main course: “Tender grilled Beef steak served with baked potatoes, young vegetables. Accompanied with sour cream and homemade herb butter” – the beef was actually pretty good, not to be compared to the one I had on UA last year

SIN%252520Aug2015-105.JPG"/>

My father-in-law opted for the wok-fried sliced chicken

Followed by a cheese selection (brie, cambozola, gruyere)

Some chocolate at the end. Overall food was good and whilst having no extraordinary compositions still classy – but it didn´t reach the presentation and quality of QR ( New, Newer, Qatar Airways – A350, A380 & B788 In C (by zolagola Aug 21 2015 in Trip Reports) ).

SIN%252520Aug2015-110.JPG"/>

After the lunch service, I took a small tour of the aircraft. Spacious Business Class rest room in the front (the other rest rooms for business class were significantly smaller)

In the meantime, the FAs had prepared my bed which comes with a cosy duvet and mattress (the FAs proactively approached my several times if they shall set up my bed)

I didn´t sleep much though (a shame I know but that´s me on planes generally), so over India I focussed on KrisWorld, the SQ entertainment system again

SIN%252520Aug2015-136.JPG"/>

A flight I had been looking forward for quite some time went by quickly but I enjoyed every moment of it. The crew did meet the high expectations I had, e.g. they also offered a lot of snacks at night time ad whilst drinks were served less frequently you were given one immediately when requesting one.

It was still dark when we landed so I only managed a quick shot of the ‘50 years Singapore’ special livery A380

Leaving the aircraft was quick and we found ourselves in Terminal 3 of one of the best, if not the best airports in the world

Great TR!

Quoting zolagola (Thread starter):
sofa-style seats.

Those wide sofa style SQ J seats are, IMHO, the best in the sky and even put many airline's F product to shame...

Quoting zolagola (Thread starter):
The seats are very secluded and the 1-2-1 layout of SQ ensures maximum privacy -

Hi zolagola.

It's good to see SQ maintaining a high standard of service. They used to be my preferred airline before a more convenient option became available.

The meals look good. Decent though not oversize portions and the presentation is pleasing. Those seats are definitely the best in appearance and width. Excellent for a Business cabin.

Thanks for sharing.

Very cool! Next time I'll stand in as one of your loved ones so I can get this experience. BTW, on this 380 do you have overhead gasper/a/c vents? If you do are they reachable (PSU) any climate controls on seats?

But surely he needed to apply for a Transit/Tourist-Visa for entry into India - or did you do the new evisa application online?!

Thank you all for your comments.

Of course when you travel a lot, a convenient connection is worth more and from PER backtracking to SIN does not make sense at all when going to Europe. Personally I don´t like the EK bling-bling too much but I have got their DXB-FRA service on my list again for 2016.

And for you the future might bring some changes as well... I heard QF are planing a nonstop LHR-PER service...

Quoting zippyjet (Reply 4):

No, I´m afraid there are none as far as I recall. One of the few downsides of traveling upfront.

Quoting debonair (Reply 5):

I went for the visa on arrival option where you only have to do an online registration but don´t have to send your passport to the embassy. And of course I did this upfront without him being aware

What a mad routing without even experiencing a stopover or being able to blame cheap LCC airfares!

Fantastic photos too.

Quoting zolagola (Thread starter):
Also in this case I had pre-ordered via the Book the Cook option and selected a dim sum selection which was OK

Dim sum with sushi???
