AC464 In J, Short Ride On The 27 Years Old Beauty

Sun Apr 03, 2016 12:02 am

Here again is my monthly Trip report,
I have been working on some other projects recently and didn’t have too much time to write trip reports. I have a few unique ones that I'm working on, those include a lot of pictures and storytelling.
So at the meantime, let me bring you a not so unique but not as boring trip report.

I went to Toronto for a couple days on the Easter long weekend, to meet up with some friends and family. (And took delivery of a car)

While looking for a flight back to Ottawa, I selectively booked AC464,
Part of the Rapid Air flight by Air Canada.

But something is different about this flight,
It is operated by a Boeing 767-300ER instead of the regular Airbus/ERJ.
It is meant to be a revenue ferry flight to Ottawa then onward to London as AC888.
The YOW flights are just filling the empty block time, the crew on AC888 are usually commute to work from YYZ/CYYZ)
Destination: Ottawa Macdonald–Cartier International Airport (http://i.imgur.com/EeJAK1H.jpg

The long awaited aisle 1 at Person has now opened. Well, it opened a couple months ago, but I haven't been to Toronto for a while. Using it for the first time.
http://i.imgur.com/7pMS3p2.jpg

Very neat and exclusive feel to it. Away from other passengers.
Very quiet, no queuing needed at all.

I assume it is every ground agent's dream?

A model of the upcoming 737MAX8
They are joining the fleet next year,
I'm not sure how long I have left to truly enjoy taking Air Canada

I hate the 737.

A little bit of queuing at Domestic departure through security.
Nowhere near as crazy as in the winter holiday season.
http://i.imgur.com/sh4Dd1a.jpg

After security, I made my way to the lounge, as usual
http://i.imgur.com/N5s2tm7.jpg

and to the shower
http://i.imgur.com/ds0GsBN.jpg

The exact same one I used last time.
http://i.imgur.com/K19RaGY.jpg

The shower has got a little bit rusty
Not that I'm complaining,
in North Amerindian Standard, a shower in the lounge is already a mercy from the Airlines.
http://i.imgur.com/CVo5yRN.jpg

Not much to choose from, really.
Had some soup and beer.

No screaming children running around this time.
http://i.imgur.com/DAH7Crd.jpg

On my way out, there's a model of the 787-9.
Soon-to-be the backbone of Air Canada fleet.
Took it to London a couple months back. Not a fan really.

My ride of the day, C-FPCA, 27 years old lady, CP veteran.
probably one the oldest planes I have ever taken. I have been on older classics like the 747-100
but it was at least 10 years ago when they were young, as was I.

Made my way through the bridge
http://i.imgur.com/MD9O6Cu.jpg

And my seat.
http://i.imgur.com/E3F1IBN.jpg

Looking out at the window,
the seat arrangement pretty much blocked all the windows.
You cannot see anything outside without turning yourself 90 degree and over your seat.
Whoever designed it...

With the A330 and 777 are being refurbished,
I believe the classic coffin are going to retired with the 767 fleet in the near future.

Pre-departure drink,
served in a plastic cup. Water or Juice.
I guess it is domestic standard for Air Canada?
http://i.imgur.com/muIuwHF.jpg

First World Problem,
I can't reach the screen without leading forward... And it doesn't come with a functional remote.
http://i.imgur.com/7LZyiLh.jpg

View from my seat.
http://i.imgur.com/OZcFS4a.jpg

I believe they retained the old control units from old J seats from the 90's.
It's completely useless.
http://i.imgur.com/8iiQBko.jpg

Audio Channel and TV channel selection...
I don't remember the last time I saw one of these, probably on Cathay's A340 in 2007.
http://i.imgur.com/M6chdLd.jpg

Video controls,
they are not functional on the main menu.
http://i.imgur.com/LNKwa9q.jpg

Foot rest, and it cannot be turned into a seat for dining.
http://i.imgur.com/xveU36v.jpg

The takeoff,
the CF6 spin up sound is probably one my of favourite.

Majestic sunset up in the air
http://i.imgur.com/mD0bBra.jpg

Cheese plate was served shortly after take off.
It's a 30 mins flight, really can't serve anything bigger than this.
http://i.imgur.com/p4Rh9ym.jpg

And nuts too.
http://i.imgur.com/GfCxLLN.jpg

As a tradition, I asked for a cup of tea.

Safety Card time!

http://i.imgur.com/6C6Evg4.jpg

The seat is actually not very comfy for a short flight,
You can either sit upright, or lying flat.
I'd prefer the seats on ERJ over this.
http://i.imgur.com/3rOhhTC.jpg

I tried to lean back a little bit, I ended up in a rather awkward position.
http://i.imgur.com/3RvfvnA.jpg

Here comes the seat control instruction

Flying over Perth, Ontario as we descent.
http://i.imgur.com/e1E9FUr.jpg

The overhead panel shows its age
and the former J-class layout.
http://i.imgur.com/NgTWzv1.jpg

Boxy overhead bin as found in many classic Boeing.

The Landing
I was surprised full thrust reverse was used with today's strict noise regulation and stuff.
The plane probably touch down too late or the cockpit crew tried to catch an early exit.

And here we are,
The End.

Thank you so much fore reading.
More flight reports will be coming soon!
Like it or Dislike it or if anything you feel like I should improve in the future

Comments are very much appreciated

It seems like I have messed up with the code once again....

When I checked on the preview it was perfectly fine, I don't know why it is doing this to me again

Sorry if it interrupted your viewing experience.

Really enjoyed reading this trip report.

Would be interested to know why you hate the 737, and weren't impressed by the 787-9?

Thank you.

Great trip report!

It looks like BA and AC are having a competition with who can have the more disgusting showers in their home turf lounges. It's amazing how there is such a difference for cleaning standards in Asia compared to Europe and North America, at least in the lounges.

The CF6 used to be my favorite spool-up sound because it brings back memories of the DC-10. However I'm now more partial to the GE90-115B

I don't like the 737 either - too narrow in Y. It really is noticeable when you've been flying mostly A320s, MD-80s and E175s to have to squeeze in to the seat on a 737.

No worries. But hey, get rid of the annoying water mark in every pic, will ya'?

I find AC to be about a 3.5-star carrier, only slightly above the US3.

Anyways, thanks for sharing!

Hate would be a little too strong, I regret choosing this word. I dislike the 737,
To me, A320 to B737 would be a downgrade, especially when I'm travelling in Economy.
I know comfort is mostly down to Airlines configurations (AC is going to make them into slaveships anyway) but 737 is noticeably narrower and feel dated.

More less just a personal opinion.

737 is a great plane after all, almost 50 years in service and is still going strong.

Oops, forgot to change my lightroom setting...

I only put watermark on something more "valuable"

despite everyone is saying how terrible AC is,
I still find myself a rather loyal AC customer... and quite satisfy with them in most cases...

They have been treating my fairly well ..
or am I a victim of Stockholm syndrome ?

Really? I flew them in September 2015 on the route MXP-YYZ-MXP and liked the lay out of the business class much more than the so called classical pod
.

Fully agree. I prefer AC over the US3 at any time. Additionally transitting through Canada to the US is hassle free. That is why I booked AC on my upcoming trip to LAS (through YYC) and back from RSW (through YYZ). In addition to this I really like the executive pod of the dreamliner.

BTW thanks for you report. It was a pleasure to read.

I've never been able to tell a difference. The Airbuses annoy me more because they make high-pitched hydraulic noises while on the ground.

I think both the 737 and A320 are great planes. I must say I enjoyed your report. I wonder how long AC will keep the 767.

majority of the younger 767s have already transferred to Rouge.
the 767 will probably exit the mainline fleet and straight to scrap yard after the next 787 orders in ~2020

I wonder how long will they keep the A330 too...

They are fitting them with PEY this year (or later?)
I assume they will be flying the mainline in the foreseeable future,
hopefully end up in Rouge at some point.

AC -> All Boeing (+ Bombardier)
RV -> All Airbus?

There are no noise procedures regarding the use of reverse in YOW. Most airports don't, those that do have the additional note "consistent with safe operating procedures"
