Emirates And Their Free Upgrades! EK149 | DXB-AMS

Tue May 03, 2016 7:47 am

Dear all,

This is my first trip report on airliners.net. I am sharing this particular one because I think it was rather special.

Last summer I took a chance at booking quite a good fare on Emirates from Amsterdam to Bangkok and Hong Kong (Via Dubai) in Economy Class.

This report actually starts half-way on the return trip to Amsterdam while on transfer in Dubai. Because of the long layover (4AM untill 2PM) I have booked myself and my girlfriend an executive hotel room in the Dubai International Terminal Hotel. Which was quite the experience. I can recommend this hotel to anyone on a long transfer.

1. The hotel room on the top floor of the airport (Concourse B).
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1495/26753486436_ebda09c7f9_o.jpg

The hotel room was roughly 50m² (540sqFt), which is in my opinion very generous given the fact that it's inside an airport.

2. The view from the room, which looks down on the Marhaba lounge.
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1467/26753484996_34aa81f1ba_o.jpg

After a (well needed) rest in the best bed I have ever slept in, we went for a breakfast in the lounge of the hotel which is so calm, it's a great escape from the hassle down below in the terminal. After this we checked out and started roaming the concource for the remaining hour of our transfer.

3. The concourse-B garden. You can actually see the hotel we slept in on the top.

This was my second transfer at Dubai Intl. in two weeks time. The first one we went into the city and we only had spent a short amount of time in the terminal. Though it struck me how quickly such a long concourse gets boring. There is really nothing for the avgeek or tourist to look out to because the windows are too far away and partly blocked by this very fancy pattern of stickers. Also the shops repeat themselves every couple of hundred feet. Therefore I think one can not enjoy him/herself for more than 2 hours in this terminal. Which is quite a contrast with HKG, where we were a day before.

When it was our time to board, we went to the gate area where we queued up with the fellow Economy class passengers. However, I almost were certain that we would end up on the other side of the curtain of these fellow Y-pax. Why? Because on the start of our trip, we were upgraded to business class and we figured that this was because of our long layover in Dubai. Sort of a 'sorry for the inconvenience' I think. So the closer we got to the gate-agents, the more nervous we got. When my girlfriend got her boarding pass scanned, the machine went *bleep bleep* and it ordered the agent to shred the boarding pass and to print a new one. And there it was! We were both upgraded to business class again!

4. The Boeing 777-300/ER (A6-EGZ) that took us on EK149 to Amsterdam, at the time it was 3 years old.

5. Upon entering the aircraft I came to the discovery that this was one of the three-class 777's. On our flight to Bangkok we were upgraded to business class row 1 on a 2-class 777.
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1493/26753483316_843402c563_o.jpg

After a quick few snapshots of the first class suites (Which look more sleek on the 777 in my opinion. Due to the straight and larger windows) we went on to our seats.

We were on seat 10J and 10K. (No guessing which seat I claimed)...

6. When we were settling into our seats, the business class attendant came to us to introduce herself (very easy; a Dutch FA!) and offered us some Moët et Chandon. (of which we probably drank more than we paid for our tickets).

7. During pushback it struck me how off-centerline this A380 was parked. (Or is that on purpose to fit more aircraft next to eachother?)

8. The endless concourses of Dubai Intl. Concourse C is the most nearby one with the 'other carriers' than Emirates parked there.

9. Holding short of runway 30R together with a sistership bound for Europe as well.
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1496/26778480125_2230b2f90b_o.jpg

10. Climbing out of the runway. What a fantastic view from 10K.... Incredible!
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1478/26753480536_86c8540de1_o.jpg

11. Hazy view of Sharjah.
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1476/26684671682_7d8aebe930_o.jpg

12. As soon as the seatbelt signs were off I started playing with the seat controls. Which was much fun. The second I went full flat the FA we met earlier came running to me asking if I wanted my bed made (with a duvet and a big blanket). I politely declined and jokingly said I was just messing around (quite easy to say to a fellow Dutch).
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1465/26172911134_e2ab9411cc_o.jpg

13. View with the shades closed. When lying flat it's almost a cocoon with a lot of privacy.
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1504/26753478556_9ba3c28b77_o.jpg

14. Routing straight over Saudi Arabia. What a fantastic landscape!
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1497/26684669942_02afcc4d62_o.jpg

After half an hour of flighttime we got served our dinner that we ordered a-la-carte. The dinner was so good that I completely forgot taking any pictures of it. I can only say it was world class for airplane food.

15. The after dinner dip must have struck hard on everyone. almost everyone was sleeping. I immediately spotted a fellow 'window licker' that also did nothing else than looking outside across the aisle.
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1503/26174520763_0bfbd18408_o.jpg

16. Crossing paths with a BA 767 over Prague.
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1496/26753476846_a1307693f7_o.jpg

17. After my girlfriend woke up from a nap. We decided to take a look at the options for cocktails. We decided to both get a Mojito, which was promptly and freshly made at our seats.
https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8561/26174520083_ede63b6e03_o.jpg

18. Then the sad moment came that we were actually already approaching Amsterdam. With the speedbrakes deployed over the province of Flevoland, we were quickly descending for the approach to runway 27.
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1504/26684668382_0d272ed755_o.jpg

19. Quick view of our routing, avoiding Syria and Ukraine.
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1496/26753475166_24afb66d4e_o.jpg

20. When approaching runway 27 you get quite a nice view of Amsterdam. (Not as good as 22 though). Among the tall buildings just above the engine cowling you can spot my university (where I study Aviation Management).
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1471/26684667012_51635e8c40_o.jpg

After a soft landing and a very very short taxi to the gate it was time to pack our stuff and get off the aircraft. I thanked the FA for her great service and had one final request: Another look at the first class suites. She kindly directed me to her colleague that was in charge of the first class cabin. Here I got shown some features of the seats and the services they receive.

21. Overview of the cabin with the huge overhead space due to the lack of overhead bins.
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1493/26711220221_c807030929_o.jpg

22. The seat after the flight. It sure looks spacious when it's empty but I doubt I would really like the fact that due to the fact that there are no overhead bins I have to keep my bag or trolley under the table, limiting my legroom. Any experiences on this?
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1488/26753473676_aa1320a815_o.jpg

23. Final view of the wing... We came to the conclusion that our fantastic trip to Asia now officially was over.
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1481/26174517533_dc45067c87_o.jpg

We were very very thankful of Emirates and their great service. Both economy and business class was very good. However, I feel like saying that the business class on the 777 is not up to par with their competitors due to the 2-3-2 configuration. Also I dislike the style of the seats with the wooden panels. But hey! I did not even pay for this!

Thank you all very much for reading this and I hope you enjoyed it. Comments or questions are always welcome.

Any reason why you did so?! Normally EK is providing free meals AND free accommodation for long layover passengers - even in Economy.

Because on the start of our trip, we were upgraded to business class and we figured that this was because of our long layover in Dubai.

Never heard of this before... Maybe you are an EK Skyward member (and collected some points on your previous trip) or you booked a higher Y fare? Would make more sense...

The stay was indeed sponsored by Emirates. Only I personally forked out the executive floor instead of the regular room. Also we had the vouchers for the free meals however we gave those away.

I am only entry-level skywards member and we booked an Economy Saver ticket. So I think that is not the case. Indeed it is a strange case. Only one other person I know had the same.

To elaborate more. What I have heard from the gate agent was that the flight was fully booked and origionally planned on a two-class 777. But due to one or two First Class bookings, the aircraft was swapped and economy class got overbooked. I think they transferred the Skywards Elite members and long-layover pax to business and business class pax to first accordingly.

Nice trip report. Thanks for sharing. As QF Platinum, have been upgraded 3 times from C to F (BNE-DXB / DXB-HAM and most recently AKL-BNE). I am 6'7" tall and had no issues storing my carry-on in my suite due to the missing overhead storage space.

Cheers from Brisbane,

Peter

Good to hear! Though there are better ways to store those bags, aren't there? I feel like this is something that is missing in the product.

Hi jeffreykim,

link to my F class trip report below. Was actually handy to have my carry-on with me in my suite as I used it as a foot rest.

This has happened to me before; I was an entry level Skywards member at the time as well as a first time EK flyer, and had booked the cheap ticket in Y. Got upgraded to business on LAX-DXB on the 777-200LR  .

Sounds like exactly the same case. It also was my first time on EK.

It happened again a few years later, on the BLR-DXB segment, but I was Skywards Silver at that time and all the Silvers in Y were getting bumped up to biz that day.

There's more than enough room under the table & TV for a large upright & backpack. I've flown in EK F 4 times now and not once was storage space a problem, nor was my legroom restricted.

On SEA-DXB, it was only myself and another gentleman in F and the FA told me to store my bag in the suite across the aisle...
