About 1:45pm today I was at the old GM Proving Grounds today and looked up to see 3 C-17's make an impressive nose to tail flyby over Gateway, and equally impressive peel off one by one, drop gear and flaps and circle back around for landing. I've never seen an aircraft of that size bank so hard and so fast before. Like they're flying fighters! Very cool!
Anyone at IWA know what the deal is with these guys?

It is called the overhead break. I have experienced it in both C-17 and C-130.
Basically the G forces are used to bleed off all the airspeed.

I've seen similar maneuvers in the vicinity of TCM. Very impressive indeed!

Every year, sometimes twice a year, we get 3-4 C-17s for specialized training. They park and fly for about a week and then off they go. Last fall they allowed some friends and family to check out one of the planes. There is a USAF Research Lab across the street (for another few months) and they work a lot with them. We also have several C-130s from Davis-Monthan as they refinish their runway, and three planes from the Collins Foundation were here the last three days. Full ramp!
