Hoax Email Advice

Fri Mar 23, 2007 4:07 pm

Hello all,

I just thought I'd share with you a little advice which might save you some time, some face, and loads more spam!

From time to time, I'm sure we all receive those emails from our friends which warn about carjackings or muggings, scam emails, viruses etc?

Before forwarding these on to everyone in your address book, try cutting and pasting the first line of the email into google and see what comes up. My guess is that, like me, you'll find that one of the first sites which is returned in your search will be www.hoax-slayer.com or something similar; this will give you the history of the email and tells you if it's a hoax.

I received an email purporting to contain pictures taken from inside the ill-fated GOL Airlines 737 shortly after the crash with the Embraer over Brazil last year. I googled it and found this article showing how these were still from a trailer for the series Lost.

It sure is amazing the lengths some people will go to in order to deceive or scare vast numbers of people!

Yep, and then the naive ones tend to give it the unnecessary attention.

OK, whatever you say .... I was merely drawing attention to one of a few websites which allow you to check out hoaxes and avoid sending on sh*t that is exactly that. Apologies for wasting your time  sarcastic

They have the 9/11 one that was circulating around college last week as well.
I said it was a fake straight away, but some people refuse to accept it.
Worth noting that this resulted in a length debate about 9/11 in which ive never heard such rubbish before. Conspiracy my ass.

Here's a couple of verify sites that I've used before:
http://urbanlegends.about.com
Some links on following aren't that great but some are:
http://justpickone.org/hoaxinfo.html
Of these, I tend to use Snopes as it seems to be most popular...
