Photoshop CS3 Photomerge - WOW!

Wed Jul 25, 2007 1:10 am

For those of you who are keen photographers, I thought I would share this with you ....

I was looking into the benefits of CS3 over CS2 (which I use). The chap I was chatting with only recently purchased the CS3 upgrade so was still discovering the new features. One thing which he raved about was the automated photomerge process available in CS3 (this helps you 'stitch' several pictures together; to make a panorama for example).

I decided to give it a go and have purchased the upgrade. I have several series of pictures which I have in the past tried to stitch together to make a panorama but found quite often, due to shifts in light, cloud movement, difference in perspective etc, the results are mediocre.

NOT ANYMORE! - the automatic photomerge adjusts everything .... lighting, perspective, scale etc etc then renders the image into one, virtually faultless and stunning panorama.

It has to be seen to be believed!

A big WOW from me and a recommendation to anyone who enjoys creating panoramas  thumbsup

Does that have anything to do with autostitch? That's what i use, with results such as this.

Very cool! I use CS2 and frankly didn't think there'd be any worthwhile reasons to upgrade, but I'll definitely have to give it a try now. Thanks for the heads up!  thumbsup

BTW - got any samples?  Smile

Hmmm...I get a student discount, maybe its time to upgrade from Creative Suite 2.0 (CS2) to CS3.

Anybody have comments on Illustrator CS3?

Sounds great, can you post an example of a panoramic?

Here we go folks,

Two images formed using the same 6 original pictures in each. Both have identical processing, are uncropped (obviously), have been photmerged and flattened:

CS2 .....

Big version: Width: 1500 Height: 335 File size: 135kb
CS2

CS3 .....

Big version: Width: 1500 Height: 328 File size: 131kb
CS3

For me, it was worth the £160 to upgrade from CS2 just for this .... I love it!

And here's another finished article, made up from 4 originals .....

Big version: Width: 1500 Height: 429 File size: 109kb

All these images are taken with a point and shoot Ixus but now I have the software, I'll be creating some super images with my 'proper' camera  Smile

Wow! I am just getting used to CS2, but it seems I'll have to think about an upgrade already...  Smile
What is the earliest Photoshop version from which you can upgrade to CS3? I own PS6, but usually use our company copy of CS2. However, I'm quite sure my boss will not pay for an upgrade to CS3, so I'll probably have to buy it myself.

You can upgrade from PS7, CS or CS2, sadly not from PS6 Sad

These images also look good .... out of interest, how many images make up each of those you've posted?

Regardless, fair play, the quality of the stitch is good  thumbsup

OK, I'm back now.

no 1: 5 photos
no 2: 3
no 3: 5
no 4: 3
no 5: 2
no 6: 3
no 7: 2
no 8: 3
no 9: 2
no 10: 2
no 11: 2
no 12: 2
no 13: 2
no 14: 3

I've got another one made from about 15 photos. It's a 360° panorama:

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/aloges/panoramas/Helgoland.jpg

The original is a lot bigger and weighs in at 15220 x 2160 pixels and 16,2 MB. Don't be confused by the high number of photos, I usually take them so that every photo will overlap 50% of the next. For the skyscraper and church panoramas, it's best to turn the photos sideways.

I just recently upgraded to the full blown version of CS3 and yes, it is an amazing program. I've been using CS2 for quite some time. I also upgraded my Corel Draw to CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X3 it is amazing as well.

As a graphic designer I use both programs and they are the best!!!!!

I really don't mean to rain on anyone's parade, but if it's just panoramas you're after, you can get that for free from AutoStitch: http://www.cs.ubc.ca/~mbrown/autostitch/autostitch.html

All of these were taken with an old Olympus µ300 Digital, joined with AS and levelled/cropped with IrfanView (in other words: rough and ready); click the images for full size:

Wow, those panoramas are amazing!! You've inspired me to go on a photo spree tomorrow snapping as much as I can...but I wish we had views like those of NYC over here.
