EDM Festivals: Miami+New York

Sat Mar 14, 2015 12:14 am

Hey guys, I have no idea if this is the right forum to post this question in (it might go to travel polls+prefs) but I figured since people travel from all over for these events, it could belong here. What's the experience of going to music festivals like Ultra or EDC New York? I've always loved EDM and been to a couple different shows, but never to a festival. I wanna know what it's like and what to expect when it comes to other people who go to these things. I'm really looking forward to having a good time, and any assistance to help me out with that is appreciated.

Cheers,
Jeff

For what you pay for these "mega festivals", you could easily go to 2-4 smaller festivals with arguably better line-ups. When you purchase a ticket, you're paying for all the artists to be there, including the large number of ones you'll never see. Why not go to several smaller festivals that only have a couple stages and be able to see most of who you're paying for?

But as far as the festival experience itself goes, it's not what it used to be...and I say that as just a 25-year old. As electronic dance music has gotten more mainstream, festivals are now overrun with people who are there for the popculture aspect more than the music itself. I go to a few festivals a year, and I generally stick to the secondary stages at the larger ones lest I be bumped into every 3 seconds by "raver chicks" wearing obnoxious flower headbands or bros just trying to show off their roid-assisted pectorals to the aforementioned "raver chicks".

Not to sound grumpy and pretentious, but the state of these mega festivals has made me a little grumpy and pretentious. But with that said, if they seem like something you would enjoy, I definitely recommend trying it once for the experience! If you like it, that's awesome; but if you go and find it wasn't up to the hype, then lesson learned!
