Would be an odd merger, not sure what they would gain from it. More Florida connections?

Unless they're crazy enough to bank on a Trump DoJ, I don't see how this would ever get approved.

I don't think it would be a good idea for United to merge again. Even if it was true, merging again would be a huge mess anyways.

Okay - thinking way way out there ...

United might be able to put all the *new* A320s with swing-out bins to good use. Many are OW - good for cross-Caribbean.
And B6 has some usable South American routes out of FLL that UA might benefit from.

Possibly, B6's new Mint seats might be compatible with UA's new Polaris seats.

This would never get approved. Not unless they gave up all of B6's slots at every NYC airport, not to mention DCA and LGB. The airlines have incompatible business models and it would serve no purpose to UA other than to gain slots, which would never happen. This is virtually a non-starter from the outset.

Haha, that's one way to get more A320s and roll out flat bed product to places like SEA and SAN ;-)

Maybe it's like with Salesforce, lost out on buying LinkedIn to a company from Washington state and now you're going for the consolation prize. AS bought VX so now you're going for the next best thing to VX.

But... If that's the case, why did LH sell their 19% stake just last year? To pave the way for UA? I don't think so...

It seems as though alot of people are against UA acquiring B6, but looking closer, I don't think it would be nearly as terrible as everyone is thinking. If you look at what B6 has to offer, UA would get almost 400 aircraft, about 150 being new on order. Plus, they would get 25 new destinations, and an additional 5 destinations that UA terminated in the past. B6 has 6 Hub/Focus Cities that UA could potentially take over. The biggest flaw is going to be the 18000 employees that B6 has. I'm sure half, if not more, would lose their jobs. There is potential for UA to become a powerhouse for the Caribbean if they were to take over B6. The aircraft and destinations are listed below. The ones with an * are Hubs/Focus Cities for B6 that UA does not service.

IF any US3 were to were with JB it should be AA as they do not have a hub at either JFK or Newark. AA's JFK operations are not a hub pr anything near Delta or UA operations in NYC.

Hmm...on the surface it doesn't seem too bad. More A320's, which if they cannibalize some of the B6 network, could replace old UA A320's. Mint A321's could replace the P.S. 757's, ditto with the TATL 752's. BOS could become a secondary TATL and TPAC network, at the expense of battling DL. But, having a BOS hub would probably be at the expense of the IAD hub, and also, AA, DL, and the DOT probably wouldn't like UA being really big at JFK and EWR. Seems untrue, there's too many logistical difficulties.

B6 has always been a dramatically more enjoyable flying experience than UA for me. It's currently my top pick for flying and I would be very disappointed to see them go.

They have been profitable pretty much every year and have a large passenger base, I'm not sure why they would merge.

Person 1 at the paint shop: "You need to paint the tail of this jet blue"
Person 2: "Paint the jet blue?"
...
Person x: "We're buying JetBlue."
The plural of Airbus is Airbuses. Airbii is not a word.
There is no 787-800, nor 787-900 or 747-800. It's 787-8, 787-9, and 747-8.
A321neoLR is also unnecessary. It's simply A321LR.
Airplanes don't have isles, they have aisles.

This!

To be honest, only WN, AS or HA merge with B6 without running into anti-trust issues in the NY metro. There is no way DL would be allowed to combine their JFK/LGA operation with B6's operation at two of the nations three slot-limited airports. Similarly, given how much the DOJ objected to the UA/DL swap at EWR, no way they will allow CO to dominate EWR and JFK though a merger.

AA considers JFK/LGA as a hub...

I'm almost certain this B6/UA rumor is not true but I can virtually guarantee that AA would never be allowed buy B6 as they are already larger than UA or DL.

In ither news AA has decided to de merge and operate all the airlines it has merged with as subsidiaries. TWA, will begin operations out of STL hub as early as January. America West will reclaim its hub at PHX and all repaint of US planes will come to a halt ASAP. Doug Parker had this to say about this decision "my good friend Scott Kirby told me this would be a good idea, prior to his departure."

I did a double take when I saw this thread - when I think about it more and more it seems like an interesting idea. Those B6 320s with free DTV would be so much better than the streaming service that UA has on them right now. UA would do is add F class and E+ to the bulk of the fleet.

This merger would never get approved unless they gave some NYC slots up at JFK and/or consolidated further at EWR. At EWR that would mean probably giving up all access to Terminal A & B gates to stay in C, and at JFK that would mean a large dumping of slots.

I don't see any possibility of that occurring in the next 10 years let alone in the near future. JetBlue should steer clear of that, wouldn't want UA ruining and possibly removing that brand.

No way, they would have to give way too much at Newark for DOJ approval. Delta LaGuardia and JFK hub is different because of Lagurdia perimeter rule.

Do differing business models really matter much in this instance? In a acquisition where one airline is considerably larger than the other, the smaller airline's business model is simply replaced, with perhaps some small holdovers (i.e. Mint). I would imagine UA's gain from B6 would be more about their client bases outside of NYC such as South Florida, the Caribbean and secondary LatAm markets. Now that B6 competes for premium transcon traffic with Mint, buying B6 eliminates that competition (think AS/VX merger reasoning).. All the newer model 320 series aircraft is added bonus.

All that said, I think the biggest stopping block is the NYC market as you suggested. Beyond the regulatory nightmare UnitedBlue would face, the almost certain need to dismantle most, if not all of JFK would kick the door wide open for AA or DL to gain more traction. With B6 out of the way, AA or DL could very easily create fortress hub on the order of what UA has at EWR. At present, one could posit UA actually has the upper hand as they are larger/stronger at EWR than either AA or DL is at JFK. Post-B6, DL could consolidate its split Domestic/International Ops at LGA and JFK into one at JFK. This then creates a further domino effect of leaving LGA open for AA which in turn gives AA two "inner city" hubs in two very important markets. LGA for NYC and with DCA for Washington DC. The US3 would do well to leave B6 alone for that reason.

Just my 2 cents,

Oh gosh give me a break. There is no way in heck the DOJ is going to allow UA to merge with another airline this decade. Same goes for AA and DL. Both airlines are doing just fine on their own. The UA and CO merger was messy enough and there is still bad blood. Also UA's turf is EWR so why would they want to deal with all the headaches of going back to JFK which they just abandoned? Next story.

I am not saying this is at all important, but remember by passenger enplanements you are talking about the 3rd and 4th largest from 2015.
UA (95M) and B6 (35M) combined would total around 130M
that would still trail AA (146M), SW (144M) and DL (138M)

(all date from here: http://www.rita.dot.gov/bts/press_releases/bts018_16)

So while I don't disagree it would be tough approval from DOJ, it would not give UA a dominate position in the total market (since UA is such a distant 4th compared to it's US rivals).
Now the DOJ would have a field day with the NYC market, but crazy things happen all the time.

I am not sure I agree that the way the CO+UA merger handled activities like reservation systems, etc have any bearing on the approval process. As I understand it the DOJ will look at market forces and impact that any merger would have on the consumer and fares.

Shocking that so many here are against this merger but were coo coo for Cocoa Puffs on all the other mergers that has taken us from 7 majors to 4? Oh that's right, JetBlue is the darling of Anet.

If the other oligopy mergers were great for the industry and employees why not one more? I mean this is what everyone wanted? Right?

For the record, I am and was against all the mergers from the get go. Capacity discipline vs market share religion isn't new, it was preached back in the 90s and early 2000s too. I am not impressed this new crop of airline CEOs think they found some new religion.

I should like to know what office you work in so that I know never to trust that company's products or services.
