737max tail cone redesign = greater rotation angle?

Thu Jan 26, 2017 5:04 am

After an admittedly cursory search, no info found on whether the tail cone redesign would allow for a greater rotation angle for the max-8 or max-9. Has anyone seen any information on this? From photos it looks like the angle from the mlg to the tail cone might be slightly different compared to the ng models.

The 737 MAX does have a different tail cone design, but it's purely for aerodynamics and has nothing to do with necessitating a higher rotation angle or anything like that.

I think the OP's question was does it allow for a greater rotation angle? When deciding on the tailcone redesign was any of Section 47 redesigned that would permit a slight increase in rotation angle? My uneducated guess says no...as the tailcone just appears to be an extension, following the same 'line' .... (sorry just don't know the term you'd use).. where as the previous tailcone came to a blunt end.. the new one continues... again following the same 'line'. I don't know... so I'm asking the same question as the OP..

No. The point where the fuselage would hit the ground has not changed with the new cone design. So no rotation benefits..

Where going aft does the new structure actually start? Any idea?

It seems to only be the bit aft of the APU access door - well above the fuselage ground strike point.

Looks like they just need to thin out the fuselage a bit where the lower curvature starts upward.
Oh well, there goes the cargo hold!

Modifying the fuselage to overcome this problem would be more complex and costly than the proposed gear changes. They may even require a whole new certification process. And yes, no more cargo hold..

Aesthetics wise, it certainly is better looking.

No problem, glad to have helped you visualize it!
