Flybe and SQ - What are the options?

Mon Mar 27, 2017 4:10 am

Hi all

Did a search on the forum but didn't really find what I was looking for, other than this thread: https://www.airliners.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1339075&p=19007313&hilit=flybe+singapore#p19007313

About 8 months ago Flybe and Singapore Airlines entered into a bit of a codeshare agreement. This is appealing to me because I am from Devon and used to work for BE at EXT, however I now live in SYD. Previously between Australia and the UK I had to either fly into LHR or more recently flew EK/QF to MAN for convenience of visiting relatives in Cheshire. My father works for BE at EXT also, and so the idea of them not having to take a 3 hour drive to London or a 4 hour drive to Cheshire before jumping on a plane for a day is one I'm sure they'll utilise in future with Staff Travel, and it is a lot more attractive for us to fly into Exeter and be at home within 20 minutes. It was great to fly directly into MAN and be at our destination within 30mins, however future visits are more likely to be focused around Devon rather than Cheshire.

So far, the best I can see is a fair bit more expensive than my usual methods and some go via MAN anyway! Personally I would have thought it would be easier to go via AMS or CDG but there seems to be slim pickings for those options. I would be interested in the opinions of fellow Anetters as to what the best options would be with regards to flying SYD-EXT, or whether the LHR/MAN options are more practical. I haven't looked into flying into BRS, perhaps going BRS-MXP-AUH-SYD?

With EXT as the preferred destination, what do you think the most practical options are?

Thanks for your input.

C.

Try CWL. Options could be via CDG, DUB, GLA and EDI.

Yeah the problem with EXT is that they only have Flybe and they don't have a codeshare with KLM. I also believe that there CDG flight is only daily as well which can limit it a bit. Flying via CDG could be your best option.

Wasn't the codeshare limited to the SQ MAN flights anyway?

What about Newquay? Lots of BE connections there (if it has to be BE)

Otherwise BRS if no BE, lots of options there

Doesn't have to be BE, but the point of the exercise is convenience from EXT. NQY is a fair trek from where my parents live and there's only really BRS that is relatively convenient as an alternative to EXT.

That might explain the lack of searching options on the SQ website.

True, but you can fly to all of those from EXT anyway so kind of defeats the purpose.

It's looking more and more like the options are either fly to LHR and get a train to Paddington then onto Exeter/Newton Abbot, or to fly to MAN as previously.

I'm not too familiar with BRS ops... What are the options? I can only really see MXP-AUH-SYD.

Try BMI via FRA or MUN, they have code sharing / through ticketing with LH; they also have CDG & HAM.
Brussels Airlines have 2 or 3 a day operated by BMI; KLM 4 daily to AMS.

If you want to self connect EZY (or RYR) cover nearly all European capitals east of Paris

At BRS the best hub is AMS with KLM but I'm not sure if they codeshare with SQ. I know they do codeshare with Etihad as I've seen that option come up when researching flights to Australia. There is BMI regional flights to Munich codesharing with LH and BRU on behalf of Brussels Airlines. Hope that helps

Oh... the west Country is such a pain in the butt to get to... and with the death of Plymouth and the demise of Brymon/BA ops, things have only gotten more difficult.. Back in SABENA days things were marginally better for international connections with really cheap connecting flights to both BRS and Exeter, but now things are pretty bleak... I was hoping for Newquay to develop into a nice LCC base of some sort, but so far nothing has materialized...

True. I'm surprised (and at the same time completely not surprised) since leaving Devon that all the plans for expansion of Exeter Airport have fallen by the wayside. There were plans several years ago to have stands all along where the Exeter Flying Club building is, but those plans were scrapped as they realised that parked aircraft would block the Tower's view of the 26 threshold, amongst other reasons.

There is huge potential for Exeter Airport, for both passenger and cargo. Still looks like it might be expensive to get there from SYD though...

I remember at one time there were charters to Toronto on Worldways Tristars, and back then this seemed like a guarantee of bigger & better things to come for the future ..

Toronto was a regular weekly summer scheduled service with Air Transat. I have no idea if it still is, but they used to bring an A310 in, and depart for Toronto via I believe Newcastle.

Back in Worldways days the flight I think stopped in Cardiff... but I could be wrong..we are talking 30 years ago here!

This is my one shot of it in the database:

This was back in 2011.

I suppose another option is SYD-YVR-YYZ-EXT when Air Transat are running it... Long way round, though and probably expensive.
