AMS gets ready to build new A-concourse

Fri Feb 09, 2018 2:15 pm

Amsterdam's Schiphol airport has released more info on the soon to be built new A-pier. Scheduled to open in 2019 it will be the airport's largest pier in terms of square footage.

More info and pictures here:

I thought that AMS is capacity constrained. Is the new pier to relieve over-crowding in other piers or to replace other piers?

Correct. As explained on their website (https://nieuws.schiphol.nl/waar-is-de-a-pier/ in Dutch) the decision was made not to have an A-pier because of the confusion between the English 'A' and the Dutch 'E' who sound similar. There is an A/B-platform though at the location where the new pier will be built.

Partially correct. Up until the '90s the pier that is now known as C was called the A-pier. It was indeed changed for the reason you mentioned.

The constraint is political. The new pier is indeed meant to relieve overcrowding and also expansion, no concourses are being demolished. Piers A+ and A++ are also planned.

The above reason is also why we have a H & M pier. As we have B-C-D-E-F-G-H-M now. And no A-I-J-K-L .
The English (and Dutch) "j"sounds like a Dutch "e". The Dutch "i" sounds like a English "e" , I don't know why they skipped K & L though.

Could be a good chuckle, concentrating all the skyteam flight on the K-L-M piers!

The renderings look beautiful and very different from the current gate and pier design at AMS. I wonder if there will indeed that much trees and plants in the new pier.
Next flight: AMS - TLL - AMS

Where exactly will the A pier go? Is it where the Fokker (RIP) Farm is? If so, what does that mean for Cityhopper operations?

Yup, on the fokker farm. Next to the b-pier. The Cargo building is the site of the new terminal: https://www.google.nl/maps/place/Amsterdam+Airport+Schiphol/@52.3035301,4.7554545,233m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0xc7d51583f1cef188!8m2!3d52.3105386!4d4.7682744

I believe due to the moving of non skyteam flights at the B-pier to the new a-pier new KLc space will be created for the lost spaces on the fokker farm.

Thank you. So at last, we will see the end of the bus rides from the Fokker Farm to the terminal and we'll get to use proper gates....

Is it already known who are supposed to make use of the A terminal? I have never bothered about the distances within Schiphol (never thought anything too much of a walk), but going from the train station to A-Pier or vice versa will be quite an exercise, automatic walkways or not.

Don't get your hopes up too soon. I would not be surprised if the current R-platform becomes the new Embraer-farm when the freighters move to the other side of runway 06/24 on an extended S-platform. Making the busride even longer. AMS really needs that people mover, the distances are becoming ridiculous.

The idea is that with the a-pier the walking distances will decrease, as skyteam ops. will be concentrated on the B to F piers. Nobody will make a H to A connection offered by a airline..

Surprised they're using the KLM 747s in the render, as they're being retired in 2020, if this is delayed at all they may never see it!

Nice and indeed totally different compared to the design of all the other piers, even though most of them are pretty outdated in exterior appearance/design. Are there any drawings of this new pier. I now only see in which area this new pier will be built but don't see how this new pier will look like (areal view of this new pier).

I'll miss that Fokker farm if it's truly going? Last time I passed through, I ended up on a transfer bus with Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age and his wife Brody Dahl of The Distillers, not to mention their baby kids and touring entourage. They had just flown in from the US and were headed for his UK tour opening solo show in Glasgow. I was on my way home from shooting a Biffy Clyro show in Slovakia. We all looked a little bedraggled, great experience ! ;-)

Huh; there are already no more Fokkers on the remote stads south-west of the B-pier. KLM Cityhopper uses Embraer E175+ and E190 now.
The the new A-pier will be build on some of the grounds of the remote stands. AFAIK, the rest of the remote stands will remain in use.
A Cargo building from KLM has to be relocated and demolished for the new pier.
Another improvement would be the relocation of the KLM catering building; this would allow the creation of several gates at both the B and A pier.
(This last thing is what pupped up in my mind. It's not planned, as are the A', etz, piers.)

Great news. Best will be if they now break the partnership with AF.

Note that there are two phases to this:

2019 opening of the new pier
8 new gates – 5 for narrow-body aircraft on the north side, 3 for wide-body aircraft on the south side. The south side gates will also be suitable for 6 narrow-body aircraft. We will build 2 additional wide-body gates on the south side of the new pier at a later date

2023 opening of the associated terminal, offering a landside facility as well. This will help easy congestion for O&D traffic, as the current main terminal gets very full already.

So at last, we will see the end of the bus rides from the Fokker Farm to the terminal and we'll get to use proper gates....

Depending on where you're connecting to, the bus ride can even be an advantage as it leaves you in a central area and can save you a walk.

going from the train station to A-Pier or vice versa will be quite an exercise, automatic walkways or not.
I'm wondering if there will also be a connection to the new terminal from the station or if you will walk through the other piers to get there. The links just show nice renderings but not much actual useful information on its practical consequences for landside operation.

there are already no more Fokkers on the remote stads south-west of the B-pier. KLM Cityhopper uses Embraer E175+ and E190 now.
I'm pretty sure the posters knew that when they wrote it, as I too know it. But for anyone who has regularly connected through AMS, and enjoyed the rides on those Fokkers, that place will always be remembered as Fokker Farm :wink2:
