Fallen ill? Diarrhea and vomiting or sneezing and coughing? The article doesn't say. Did they have the fish?

They are reporting high fevers and coughing attacks.

In the ABC footage you can see all the ambulances and EMT vehicles: https://abc7ny.com/plane-carrying-dozen ... k/4152344/

Someone claiming to be a passenger on board says there are no sick people on his level of the plane: https://twitter.com/LarryCoben/status/1 ... 7080368129

The other 400 didn't have fish for dinner.

PS: Article now says fevers over 100 degrees Fahrenheit and coughing.

I'm not doubting the story, but it'd take quite some time to take the temperatures of over 100 people

With a lot of medical personnel, not really. Regardless, they probably did a sampling.

According to CBS, Emirates apparently is already blaming the food. Airplane! indeed.

I'm curious as to why they deplaned a number of flight attendants and had them walk with their luggage in hand into an ambulance. Do health officials not want their assistance in managing passengers?

I mean, F/As aren't usually trained medical professionals aside from emergency measures such as performing CPR, providing supplemental oxygen, and using an AED, so my guess is there really isn't much of a way for them to assist with these types of illnesses.

Agreed. My only thought was that they could help with any necessary passenger communication. I've been on flights where those multiple language announcements were definitely helpful.

Someone posted what they say is onboard video.

Regardless of what Emirates is saying, I'm assuming health officials will in fact look beyond food poisoning.

100 passengers were being checked (CDC). Emirates confirms that only 10 people are affected.

Coughing and experiencing high temperature seems like air born transmitted disease. If it is food poisoning coming from say 1 out of 3 main courses, why only 10 people?

I agree with this. If it was food poisoning from bad catering, almost everyone who ate that food would get sick.

That's why people are skeptical of Emirates' initial claim of food poisoning. The passenger who posted that onboard video told the news that people were coughing before they ever boarded the Dubai leg and that one of the flight attendants she knows got sick during the flight.

The NYC mayor's office is pointing out that some of the passengers had connected to Dubai from Mecca where there's a flu outbreak. So they are not confirming the cause of the illnesses, but putting the flu out there as a possibility.

NBC is reporting that at least 12 people have been taken to local hospitals.

An official statement from Emirates:

"Statement: Emirates can confirm that about 10 passengers on #EK203 from Dubai to New York were taken ill. On arrival, as a precaution, they were attended to by local health authorities. All others will disembark shortly. The safety & care of our customers is our first priority"

that seems most likely. As someone who's done hajj and been to makkah many times, the potential to spread disease there is about as bad as it gets. millions of people from all voer the world in close proximity sharing food, water, toilets, etc. i totally buy the flu story, as it's a running joke among muslims that hajis (people who do hajj) always come back sick

The story on CNN is quite different. It states people were sick prior to the boarding flight at DXB:

This theory seems plausible, but for an outbreak of this magnitude, shouldn't we also expect similar incidents on other flights out of Mecca?

I myself just came back from Mecca doing hajj a few days ago. Many members of our group had cough on the last few days of our trip.

Definitely possible. Could also just be "bad luck" that there were an excessive number on this flight. I supposed we'll know sooner than later if it happens on other flights...or if it already has in lower numbers and gone unnoticed/unreported.

I've seen the symptoms and they're not pretty.

It starts with a slight fever and dryness of the throat. When the virus penetrates the red blood cells, the victim becomes dizzy, begins to experience an itchy rash, then the poison goes to work on the central nervous system, severe muscle spasms followed by the inevitable drooling. At this point, the entire digestive system collapses accompanied by uncontrollable flatulence. Until finally, the poor bastard is reduced to a quivering wasted piece of jelly.

Articles and information change very quickly. Entirely possible it said 100 when it was posted, because that number has been flying around a lot. As has 10. And 18. And who knows what else. Unless you saw the original post with the article at that moment, it's not fair to say OP is sensationalizing.

There seems to be an increasing number of fume events on new airplanes recently. Strange odors. Weird smells that are making people nauseous etc. Wonder if this could be something along those lines. Bad bleed air?

Pull your head in. Initial reports reported 100 passengers were ill, bnonews.com twitter feed initial tweet said 100. Rather than accusing others of sensationalizing things, debate the topic and not throw accusations at others, if you can’t do that you are not obliged to participate in the discussion
