Any chance of commercial service returning to INT?

Sun Apr 07, 2019 11:41 am

Winston-Salem (INT) was an early stop, even hub, in Piedmont’s route network. US Air kept some commuter service (3-4x daily to CLT) after the acquisition, but a number of years ago, that service was discontinued in favor of GSO. Is there any chance with the growth in area of reinstated service by AA to CLT or possibly even DL to ATL? My guess is no, but I’d love to see it.

If I had to guess, there’s 2 possible options:

1) Service comes back, or
2) Service doesn’t come back.

50% chance.

I would say no. INT had service for years because it was Piedmont’s home and maintenance base. Even in the sixties, the majority of their service in the Triad was through GSO. At one time their maintenance hangars were located across the road from the airport. They had flashing lights to stop traffic when a plane was being towed across the road. Once, a car blew through the lights and collided with a 727. Later, the major maintenance facility was moved to GSO. Subsequently, they went to a hub and spoke operation based in CLT. Now that they have been absorbed twice, US and AA, I would say INT is a non-starter.

Probability is not the same as possibility.

Delta keeps parking CR2s. AA has parked all the props but still contracts a lot of E140s and E145s. The prospect of small cities getting service that was dropped years ago diminishes by the day.

I doubt it. I can't really see the Triad supporting service at two airports these days.

IMHO the only reasonable shot would be if the cost difference for a ULCC is a lot lower at INT versus GSO.

I do not think that scheduled airline service will ever return to INT. I do remember fondly reading about Piedmont's service in & out of the Smith Reynolds Airport (INT) in Winston-Salem in Piedmont's system timetables. At the same time back in the day, I remember reading Allegheny's (later USAir's) system timetables when they had service in & out of Philadelphia-Northeast (PNE). There are many cities around the world where lower-tier airports have lost scheduled commercial service over the years. Without re-regulating the airline industry in the USA, service to those lower-tier aerodromes is NOT coming back!

Actually, would be interesting if Allegiant went to Winston to get away from Spirit at GSO.
