Why doesn't Itami have any International Flights?

Sat May 18, 2019 12:28 am

Why doesn't Itami have any International Flights? I mean Itami could support flights to GMP, PEK, SHA, and TSA.

Google it. When Kansai opened, the Japanese government limited Itami to domestic only

Perhaps a better question is why does Itami still exist after megabucks were spent building KIX.

B/c for all the noise concern, people love their airport that's in the smack middle of the city?

Hence they come up with all the restrictions as compromise, i.e. No international flights; Limited to 370 flights per day with 170 of them being "turboprop-only" slots (That had since been relaxed to "quiet plane" slots, which include 737NG, A320 series, CRJ/E-Jets, and of course, turboprops); Perimeter rule (1000km or less, so no CTS/OKA) that was relaxed around 2000 (4 round trips per day beyond perimeter) before being dropped in 2012. Oh, and of course, nothing over 2 engines (It's irrelevant now, but back in the day JL/NH still runs domestic 747s).

But yes, there are already tons of protectionism for KIX. Although it's not until recently that KIX finally grows towards its potential (Peach growing there along with the greatly increased inbound traffic from both South Korea and mainland PRC).

Or DCA...or LGA.

P.S. People have to remember that HND didn't open up to international flight b/c they really wants to do that, but rather, NRT was reaching capacity and it's just extremely hard to expand around NRT with all those landowners still holding onto plots of land. HND noise concern is actually fairly low as it's next to the bay, i.e. approaches are over water, while departures immediately turn towards Tokyo Bay.

At 14 million+ annual pax, does this make Itami the largest airport around globe without intl flights?

I believe that would be São Paulo‘s CGH with 22m pax.

If anything it would be UKB getting the international flight first, negotiation and discussion have already started.
There is almost 0% chance that ITM can resume back to international operations but UKB is better and more ideal than ITM for international flight anyway.

It’s right next to Sannomiya, center of Kobe and has the proximity to connect to Shinkansen to go to Western Japan.
It doesn’t have noise issue as it’s man made airport. Better infrastructure and lots of land still vacant waiting to be developed.

Well these really aren’t surprising because KIX was originally selected to be built there....

Isn’t UKB owned by Vinci / Oryx?
Greetings from Hong Kong.... a subsidiary of China Inc.

It also takes just as long from UKB to the central train station of Umeda as it takes to get there from KIX and is actually cheaper.

If they expanded the terminals a little bit it could be one of the best airports in Japan! It would be more convenient for international flights for everyone from Amagasaki down to Himeji.

You are right about the HND noise concern, but it will be different when the Yokota airspace opens.
The new flight route directly overflies Tokyo's most abundantly populated areas.
