Is Air New Zealand 80% owned by the New Zealand government still?

Sun Jun 02, 2019 7:33 am

After the collapse of Ansett Australia the New Zealand government injected NZ$800 million into Air New Zealand owning 80% of its shares.

Is it still the case? Have they sold the shares? Air New Zealand is still a listed company right?

Air New Zealand is dual-listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange (NZX) and the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX).

NZX listing: AIR

Are there plans of the NZ govt. to go for further disinvestment by selling off their shares and getting it more into the hands of private investors?

Wow! I don't realize that there are still airlines from Western countries that their governments hold the majority shares. What other Western country airlines that the majority shares belong to the government?

TAP Portugal is 50% owned by Portugal, state of Finland holds around 55% of Finnair. While not majority, the largest 2 shareholder of SAS group is government of Sweden and Denmark.

These 3 comes up in mind but there might be others too. While not that common, it isn't that rare too

Depends on your definition of a Western country, if you include Latin America, Argentina is a good example that comes to mind. Also, the Latvian government owns the majority of Air Baltic and the Polish government also owns the majority of LOT.

Unlikely with the current Governent, the current party in control is anti selling of state assets.

The New Zealand government gets an very health return yearly from there investment in NZ.

Not likely, thankfully. We've done the stupid selling off of state owned assets too many times already.

If the airline is makeing an profit, I believe Qantas, Air New Zealand and RyanAir are all few of the airlines that are ranked investment grade.

While it’s worth noteing NZ has an large government shareholding, under New Zealand law the Government has very little influence in the running of the airline. They are simply an shareholder and have the same rights as any other shareholder. For example the Goverment can’t tell NZ what routes to operate or make them operate domestic routes that lose money. NZ has dropped plenty of loss making regional routes over the last couple of years.

Hope the Govt. of India/South Africa/Italy and the likes, take valuable lessons from the NZ govt in running a profitable airline along commercial lines with little interference. Those countries have literally embarrassed themselves with the situation their state run airlines have come to. They literally drain their economy in running and keeping alive a white elephant.

NZ's Running of ANZ is the best running of a state owned airline. Governments can't run airlines. Run them as businesses not political tools.

As nationalism rises and governments seek to protect strategic assets, don't expect to see huge sell offs in the future.

Does not help that profits have declined recently so there's less appetite for private companies to invest.
