United Announcing Something Tomorrow (Space Theme)

Thu Jun 20, 2019 3:43 pm

According to their most recent twitter post, United will be announcing something big tomorrow at 1030am Chicago time. The twitter post uses a space theme. Almost wonder if it is related to their new Star Wars livery.

I would imagine the Star Wars 737 is out of paint and this is the public unveiling of the actual airplane.

I don’t believe it is the Star Wars livery being revealed. No B738s are currently in paint according to the UA fleet site (IIRC all paint lines were shut down this summer due to the MAX grounding) and I don’t see any B738 ferry flights from places like AMA/VCV/ROW/GUS into ORD. Plus, rumor is the livery won’t be revealed until Q4 2019, closer to the movie’s release.

I bet this will just be an announcement of some sort of promotion involving Star Wars.

Maybe it’s because they’re ordering the Spacejet ;)

The more I think about it, the more I think it actually is space related and not Star Wars related. Just look at the replies United has responded with... Something concerning the moon... Which would also tie in with the Apollo 11 Reference in the video.

First Airline to offer non-stop flights to the moon?

Probably that United are buying refurbished 737 NG's and that they have decided to take the cheese and tomato paste off the pizza! :duck: :duck: :duck: :duck: :duck:

I agree that some sort of lame marketing promotion tie-in to Star Wars is more likely, but if you were to take it uber-literally and fancifully, perhaps it is some sort of partnership with Virgin Galactic? Get PQMs and MQDs for your 016 ticket stock to the Karman Line... ;)

Seems unlikely as I'm not sure what value such a partnership would provide to both parties (other than perhaps business class flights to/from training and the launch / return sites included in the price)... but who knows. Virgin Galactic is very close to launching revenue service.

Given UAL's presence in Houston, I'm betting this is related to the
upcoming anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission / moon landing :)

My guess is 5x weekly nonstop IAH-Space Station. Probably on the 788. Some weight restrictions.
Next flight: October 17 DL2641 BWI-ATL B739
October 17 DL2607 ATL-TPA B752

I don't believe it has anything to do with Star Wars - it more than likely has something to do with IAH.

I'd say they are partnering with the SpaceX to use the starship to launch flights across the world that would take only half an hour?
To me, it will always be:
- Bombardier CSeries
- Airbus A321neoLR and A321neoXLR
- EMBRACER ERJ-170, ERJ-175, ERJ-190, and ERJ-195
- MITSUBUSHI MRJ

Anti narrowbody-long range-twinjet gang. Long live the A380 and 747!

Sounds like a 50th anniversary Apollo 11 something or another. What was popular in 1969 that they could bring back? Tang, fondue, DC-8's...

The flight attendants working in 1969 are still there however...

Could it be that M100 order? I mean the stupid space puns would make sense. I can't see them hyping up an announcement for jsut a special livery so much. Whereas being launch customer of a new plane would make more sense, even though it still is kinda weird. Plus the M100 is supposed to be formally launched later on. I hope it isn't like that SFO expansion earlier this year

We all know how these "big announcements" are. United isn't the only one guilty of this, plenty of airports and other airlines do this.

Given that it is "space" themed, perhaps it is an onboard improvement to personal space, or luggage space. Could also be some kind of space theme in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo missions. I'd say the latter is more likely.

This makes a lot of sense, particularly with the Paris air show still going on and the recent news about Mitsubishi rejiggering the aircraft to better align to U.S. scope restrictions.

United is already at its scope limit with 255 E170/75, and the 175s are relatively new. The CR7s are being replaced by 175SC and are being STC'ed into CRJ-550s to step into the 50-seat role. To unlock scope, United would have to order a new small narrowbody, and I don't think the SpaceJet/M100 fits that bill.

Well, Houston is in the same time zone as Chicago. I should have mentioned Central time rather than “Chicago Time” in my original post. Anyways, these two posts seem to indicate it may be a long-haul flight and also that Houston may be involved.

Just guessing, it’s likely neither of the two, but it probably could be something out of IAH, People tend to associate Houston with Space, so maybe this could be what UA is teasing.

The SpaceJet has 76 seats, which is the maximum seat count UA can have on its RJs. Is this number specific to UA's scope clause or shared among all the US legacies?

I don't think UA has any China Zone 1 frequencies left to use so they would need to cancel another PEK/PVG route for this. Please correct me if I am wrong.
