They should have went for ZRH instead but I will take MXP (centre of Italian fashion/industry and always has business with Asian manufacturers).

This is exciting I hope they will launch more long-haul destinations. They are one of my favourite carrier and I think they are underrated.

You cannot go wrong much in the Alpine Region... be that Zurich, Munich, Milan... al good and affluent destinations that combine business with leisure.
The strongest out of these three is perhaps Munich, but ok Milan is fine...

This route is more suited for a B789 initially considering that annual p2p demand is only 34,000 pax round trip.

They don’t have enough slack in the 787 fleet to make this route happen. Probably going to be carrying a lot of cargo on the 777 since MXP is a big cargo station in Europe.

Maybe that is the reason for MXP, because as far as I am aware the air transport agreement between Taiwan and Germany has not been updated yet and this would be a requirement for BR being able to fly into MUC.

The est. route LIMC TO RCTP (assuming 7/15/19) would be around 5700 NM. Based on a B777 300ER estimated 350 3 Class Pssgrs. and B787 900 estimated 270 3 Class Pssgrs. with cargo loading to approach max. takeoff wt., and typical contingency and final reserves fuel, total flight time would be around 11 hrs.- 20-30 min. (with avg. W/C P022). The B787 900 would fly at a higher avg. Mach (Est. .850) than the B777 300ER (est. .835-.840), so would have a lower total flight time. The B787 900 on this route would be significantly more fuel efficient and require significantly less total block fuel and trip fuel, but of course would be carrying much fewer 3 class total passengers than the B777 300ER, as noted.
Looks like the B777 300ER aircraft selection was made based on more ticket revenue via more total passengers/flight and more revenue with maximizing cargo loading (it fits for LIMC) vs. the lower fuel costs of a B787 900 and it's lower flight time.

I think EVA don't have enough 789 to do this trip. They will be flying YVR and VIE and that already got their 789s busy. Unfortunately this cannot be flown with 78X given that EVA will have 20 of them coming in the next 3 years..
MUC should probably be next for EVA... according to some news source. but ask SQ22 pointed out, the traffic right is an issue as of now..

it is overdue for a major revamp... but Angie and her folks were probably too heavy on the China side to touch this yet.

I'm surprised they didn't go with ZRH, but MXP is also logical for them. However I'll admit I'm surprised they went 77W on it and not 789.

Queensland probably is more focused towards the market from TPE e.g. Beaches, Great Barrier Reef etc. Queensland is typically pretty strong with the Asian market.
So does this new route give away when they they are planning to get back the dry leases 77W that NZ has had for the past year from them.

also there is a much larger Taiwanese community in Brisbane compared to Melbourne or Sydney. Hence a higher O&D.
