North Korean airspace

Mon Aug 05, 2019 7:17 am

Why can’t airlines use North Korean airspace? It’s not a war zone or anything.

Well, DPRK is also banned for US non-diplomats.

I'm sure once North Korea (DPRK) and US get an agreement to have liaison offices in each respective country, which is like the first step to have formal diplomatic relations.
I do think is likely considering the events unfolding now with both leaders, both could also get to a point of axing the travel ban, and airspace may also be a possible relaxation. Just a matter of time.

Technically it is, as is the south. There was a ceasefire but never an official end to the Korean war.

Any countries can decide to close or open their own airspace. Such as Pakistan did a couple of weeks ago.

There is talk going on to open the airspace for foreigners careers.

Cheers,

A.

Still some airlines do fly through North Korean airspace, mostly European airlines on their flights between Japan / South Korea and Europe. Not too long ago this was discussed here on Airliners.net.

https://ops.group/blog/north-korea-dprk ... fe-to-fly/ The only reason why North Korean airspace isn’t open is that America won’t allow it to happen

I think airlines use it all the time, Finnair for example crosses North Korean airspace from time to time, there is now an Asiana flight just over Pyonyang.

you should checkout on flightaware and check the difference in routes between the South Korean airlines and Russian airlines on the Seoul Vladivostok route. Korean carriers on flights to Vladivostok take outrageously huge detours.

Lufthansa is also using the DPRK airspace for their Japan flights.
