Civil liberties in the wake of a tragedy

Tue Aug 06, 2019 5:30 pm

Our civil liberties are firmly embedded in the Constitution. After a tragedy, there is always a temptation to erode those liberties.

The latest example is Cory Booker. He is demanding that Trump’s Manchester rally next week and all future rallies be cancelled. In other words, he is insisting that his political opponents have their First Amendment rights stripped.

This is the doings of a despot.

It is important that we keep our Constitutional rights intact in light of these tragedies. If the Constitution needs to be amended, then so be it. But ignoring the rule of law is simply not the answer.

Is Cory Booker demanding that ? Let's see that source?

First off, give this a read.

Increased background checks? We have them already. to exercise a right, my background has to be investigated? Why not a background to vote? The purchaser has to pay for the background check, the left will cry out paying for a background check to vote is a poll tax...

The hate is coming from the left. Dispute it? Prove it. The blanket charges that Trump is a racist, prove it. Remember, racist, pertaining to race.

No real media there. And nothing from Cory Booker.
Seems to me to be just racist right wing lies exaggerating a campaign manager's request to cancel the racist rallies for some real gun legislation. Seems funny how the right wing nuts complain about civil rights, buy deny others their rights.

My link shows a copy of the actual press release. She is Corey’s paid mouthpiece. Are you saying that she has gone rogue? That’s even scarier!

What did she say to deny Trump's civil liberties?

What did she say to deny Trump's civil liberties?

She is attacking Trump’s Constitutional right of assembly and is demanding that he not enjoy that right as he sees fit.

VTKillarney must stand on his left leg for an hour on Wednesday mornings.

Have I made you stand on your leg?

Asking someone to do the right thing different from making them do the right thing.

How? She sent out a press release asking Trump to cancel his rally. That is not the denial of civil liberties. Despite what your right wing racist rags might say.

I did,
and I still fail to see where your thread start comes from. They want Trump to do his job instead of hold a campaign rally for his supporters..

It’s not their call. That’s my point. It’s scary that they think it is.

Indeed, after major gun, criminal and terrorism attacks, there is often cries for more invasive security of our persons, more limits on public access, calls for taking away guns, more laws that just complicate and conflict with other rights and laws. The USA has a very strong right to free speech, unlike many countries one can express favorable views of Nazism or display their symbols although it is very offensive. We have seen after gun massacres, there are calls for more laws to restrict guns, but our 2nd Amendment, as terribly flawed as to the 21st Century it is, and fears of disarming the general public prevent more extensive reforms. Fears of gun violence and terror acts means you can't bring a bottle of water into a football stadium taking away our ability to not be forced to buy exorbitantly priced food and beverages inside.

There is the old saying, alleged connected with Benjamin Franklin: many will trade freedom for security but end up with neither. We need a much better balance of security to keep our freedoms and not just do knee-jerk reactions that won't work or make our lives worse.

Would you say it's Trump's call ? Because that is who they are asking.

And either way, it was not Cory Booker calling for it. Just a campaign manager exercising her First Amendment rights.

I understand that you read right wing racist websites, but please quote from them if you are going to blame Cory Booker, and not from the tweets embedded in the sites that say nothing of the sort so we can see what sites you are reading .
