Passengers heard 2 claps and said, that pilots “were trying to re-start the engines”. Thankfully they managed to remove the chassis, or it would be much more than we have.

Well done to the pilots for putting this bird down safely with no casualties on board. I’m sure the A321’s advanced systems also played a major part in this not ending in disaster.

Wow!! Amazing skill from the pilots. Very lucky this happened where there was space available to make a crash landing in the fields. If this had happened over a populated built up area, the result would have been too awful to think about.

1) holy smokes!

2) EVERYTHING is recorded in Russia.

3) impressive putting it down in a field and keeping the cabin intact.

Good skills to perform under such a pressure. Fortunately no populated areas.

About the filming, it should be a better idea to be in brace position rather than holding your phone against the window.

On the "landing" video, is that the sound of the engine surging? Like a spooling up (with a buzz) and then spooling down sound?

At this point the aircraft was pretty much a glider, so I doubt the safe outcome was a result of advanced systems. This was good piloting/luck.

Those systems prevent the pilots to stall the plane when pulling on the stick too much.

The A320/321 seem to be a good glider.
Right after it happened they must get the plan to keep plane level and go into the field. In such a stressful situation I think it proofs a good crew skill.

Thank goodness there was some field right after the end of the runway, had this been a a place like LHR or similar it would have been an absolute disaster.

They landed with gear up.

Would it have been better had they lowered the gear? :stirthepot:

Is it technically an "emergency landing" If it barely takes off and glides down onto a field with its landing gear up? It's more like a gentle and well handled crash.

When paragliding, in french, if you land in a crop field you "salad" yourself, if you land in a pasture you "cow" (vache) yourself. These guys just saladed a bloody airbus. Brilliant. Kudos to the crew. This could have been a horrible accident. The normal rule here is you have to give the farmer 5 bucks, but I don't know what the rule is for a narrowbody LOL

It's very fortunate that there was no fire...Also that the corn field actualy might have helped.
Isn't this kind of failures is extremely rare?
The weather looks just fine, is there any confirmation about a possible bird strike or that something went to sh-- inside the engines?

yes, airline and all other sources reported multiple bird strike for both engines.

you can see them on portside video just after V2

for both engines- rare. previous notable was at 2009. for single - common issue usually not reported in media.

Nice gesture by passengers applauding and thanking pilots and crew members for saving them shortly after evacuation:

Also per passenger comments, there were 1 or 2 people trying to save the cabin bags, but quickly realized it is not worth it.

Dear A-netters,

I would have a question related to the envelope protection system of the A320 series in this situation (double engine failure):
What flight mode will be active if both engines will fail, causing also a failure of both green and yellow hyd systems? Would it stay in normal, degrade to alternate or even drop to direct mode? Is it correct that only blue hyd system is available in this case?

Best regards,
Hendric

It's definitely just as impressive and challenging as the situation the crew of US1549 faced. It's a shame this miracle won't gather as much attention simply because of where it happened. These pilots deserve all the awards. They truly did something very impressive here

Those 320/321 Buses look pretty and dainty, but seem to be built quite robustly. On the other hand, kudos to the flight crew for managing the evacuation of 200+ passengers. It isn't a joke. Any time you lose your source of propulsion, all bets are off with respect to the outcome. And here, there was even lesser time available than the Hudson event. The pilots had to take a now or never decision, considering the terrain. For that ALONE, they deserve great commendation.

Sure luck played a part because the corn field was handier than a populated area would have been. But as far as the aircraft is concerned a robust design and well designed systems don’t hurt. Fantastic job done by the crew and kudos to Airbus. I won’t say what most people are no doubt thinking because my post will probably be deleted.

They hit the ditch with engine nr 2 first it seems, which caused the engine to detach (as designed), making the aircraft turn a bit to the right hand side.
Could have ended much worse, glad everyone survived without serious injuries.

How do they evacuate passengers when a plane crash lands like this? Do they deploy the slides or do they evacuate over wing?

I'm not going to down play that the crew have obviously done a good job in a very poor situation, they were extremely lucky though. Obviously besides the point of flying through a flock of birds and losing both engines, but besides that, thankfully they had pretty much everything else go in their favour.

* Good weather and daylight.
* They weren't too high, which meant they weren't going to travel too far. Which in this instance was a blessing.
* Flat, open terrain. So, no buildings, trees, hills/mountains, roads, etc to collide with.
* Farm land with corn at least 8 to 10 feet high, however small, it would've helped cushion the impact and slow the aircraft down on the ground.
* The aircraft has managed to jump over the ditch in the farm land. Could've easily nosed first into the ditch.
* Speed was relatively low.

The best thing that Sully had going for him was a bit more altitude and time to make a decision, besides water, not too many open spaces around New York.

Another example of "luck" that I can think of is the SAS MD80 that went down shortly after take off, coming down on an icy field.

If this had happened here in SYD, it would've resulted in either a ditching or a total disaster.

Good airmanship by the crew here and a huge dose of luck for everyone on board.

Is it just a matter of luck that there was no fire?
Or are there systems in place that prevent fuel spilling when the plane crashlands and an engine breaks off. Because I can imagine sparks flying around with a landing like this.

Now let's debate this:

They landed with gear up.

Would it have been better had they lowered the gear? :stirthepot:

Did they land gear up ?

Hard to tell from the drone footage. The QRH procedure would be to have them down.

I didn't hear the normal chimes on either the takeoff or landing videos to indicate gear retraction.

From the videos it looks like the bird strikes were either just before or after rotation.
