Liverpool John Lennon - potential new international routes?

Mon Dec 30, 2019 5:30 pm

Is the lack of international routes here because of the proximity to MAN? Seems like a SZN/CAN kind of thing. Even EK don't fly here, which tells you something.

At least transatlantic flights should be able to maintain demand from Liverpool (if not eastbound).

Caribbean? Miami? JFK?

It's just not a huge airport. You cannot compare CAN and SZN which are both pax in 10s of millions

The runway is too small and any demand will just go through MAN

The only thing I see for LPL is a seasonal NYC service but thats about it. Its not far from MAN at all by car/rail (if its on time that is)

I seconded the runway part - you're talking about a runway that's <7500ft long, which more or less means no TATL flights could takeoff from there without payload restriction.

And LPL has plenty of international flights. Going to AGP or ALC or even DUB is international...

Imagine all the people, needed to support these flights. MAN covers that area, there wouldnt be the passenger volumes to support Liverpool as well. But you may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one.

I’d possibly say a couple of long haul holiday ones could work. Maybe a CUN or a MCO once or twice in the summer. But I Guess it would have to take a payload hit still and then would it be worth the cost of doing all the admin and logistics just for a few flights that are well supplied at MAN? I would imagine not.

But then again you'd face the problem of a short runway. Although Bristol has an even shorter runway and does handle long haul flights to Florida on TUI, so in theory it should be possible. But these flights would be weight restricted, they cannot carry any meaningful payload.

With Manchester just next door which has much longer runways, that's where all the long haul flights will go. Liverpool is great for short haul within Europe, but that's it.

The difference between Bristol and Manchester is that Bristol doesn't have any other meaningful airport nearby. That's why TUI operates those long haul flights out of there. Liverpool does have another larger airport nearby.
