Tag on flight-who still have them

Sat Jan 04, 2020 5:49 pm

Given improvement in airliner's range and popularity of P2P bought in by 787, A350 et al, who still operates a short haul tag from long haul flight, I know KLM does KUL-CGK, SIN-DPS and TPE-MNL, but who else does this? Why such tag became unpopular bar improvement in aircraft? We had AF, SR, BA to MNL from HKG before

Is any foreign carriers doing SYD-MEL? I know AI did that before.

I get that the efficiency of those new aircraft removes the need for a lot of the tag ons. But part of me thinks it could almost inspire new ones for small airlines. For example an airline with one or two long haul planes such as Air Tanzania could do LHR and FRA in one go. I’m only an armchair enthusiast so probably very good reasons why not haha

BA have actually just started a new tag on flight from LHR. The LHR-BAH flight now carries on to DMM

Lufthansa still operates some:
LH624 FRA-KWI-DMM

LH636 FRA-RUH-BAH

LH594 FRA-ABV-PHC

LH568 FRA-LOS-SSG

And vice versa. Probably mostly to fill the flights. In the past they had some more. I was a few times on FRA-KUL in 2015, which continued to CGK. Some time later, they removed the short hop to CGK and afterwards they shut the route completely.

Before that LH flew FRA-SIN-CGK.

Also there is LATAM Chile SCL-AKL-SYD.

Emirates does SYD-AKL and SYD-CHC, both bookable in their own right.
QR does SYD-CBR, but only bookable on a CBR-SYD-DOH intinerary.

I know the title is ambiguous and it's a matter of judgment, but the OP asks for a "short haul tag from long haul flight." Some of the things getting posted here are fifth freedom flights (fine; most tags are) but with 5+ hour block times. For example, I'm not sure in what world MXP-JFK is a short haul flight. Similarly, I wouldn't consider the CA IAH-PTY a short tag even though it's short relative to the flight it's tagged onto.

A poster above mentioned ET, and some of theirs are definitely in the wheelhouse for this thread (e.g. ADD-ARN-OSL). SQ also operates a SIN-DME-ARN. Both of those are bookable on the short tags as standalones.

AC does YYZ-SCL-EZE. They tried separating them for a while but brought them back together in one flight again.

In earlier years, SYD-MEL and GRU-GIG were some of the more common ones for long haul carriers but not seen as much anymore.

Not sure if it counts as a tag-on, but KL and SN do a number of continuous triangle flights in Africa (eg: AMS-KGL-EBB-AMS)

Emirates still do SYD-CHC but dropped SYD-AKL (as well as MEL and BNE - AKL quite some time ago.

Oops, thanks for the correction. Have to admit I haven’t done SYD-AKL with them since a345

Do triangle routes count? Air China flies PEK-ISB-KHI-PEK. One of only three non-ME4 major carriers to serve Pakistan, the other being Thai and recently BA.

There's also KQ, with routes like NBO-LVI/VFA-CPT or NBO-BKK-CAN.

In South Africa, there's SQ's SIN-JNB-CPT (No Fifth Freedom) or TK IST-JNB-DUR along with QR DOH-JNB-DUR (Neither has fifth freedom rights) that are textbook definition of tag-ons.

As for EK, routes like DXB-BKK-PNH (and also DXB-BKK-HKG) along with DXB-GIG-SCL/EZE has to count as tag-on. While at BKK RJ also fly AMM-BKK-HKG/KUL, and MS CAI-BKK-HKG.

Ultimately, tag-ons (some are triangular routes) are very common in Africa. Gotta love those FIH-BZV flights by AF, AT, and also KP (ASKY).

Triangular flights are not really tags as it more or less goes in a circle and have quite often the same flight number from and to Amsterdam

Another one that's "textbook" definition of tag-ons: CX745/746 HKG-DXB-BAH. CX does have other fifth freedom flights, but they feel more like an "1 stop" flight rather than tag-ons (HKG-TPE-KIX/NGO/NRT/ICN and HKG-BKK-SIN).

There's another LATAM Chile route that's textbook definition of tag-on: SCL-MAD-FRA (LA704/705).

From PRC, 3U operates CTU-HEL-CPH. They used to also operate CTU-PRG-ZRH in 2018 (ZRH was then dropped).

It's true that tag-ons that involved USA are mostly gone, though.

According to OP, these routes do not qualify as they are equally long (roughly 3h+3h each), however KQ offers other options in West or Southern Africa that could be included (despite being operated in 737/E90 and not in a WB) - like your BKK-CAN in Asia i.e.
For the rest I do agree with you

Lots of great ones in the Carribean and the Middle east. Look for airlines fly routes from places farther than you would expect to cities smaller than you would expect. Example-In the middle east, you can see that Cathey flies to Bahrain. Hong Kong is very far away, and Bahrain is a fairly small place. That smells like a tag-on flight, and sure enough, it is one from Dubai.
Instead of typing in "mods", consider using the report function.
Love how every "travel blogger" says they will never fly AA/Ethihad again and then says it again and again on subsequent flights.
