Probably a dumb question: Do chartered planes use jetways at airports?

Sat Jan 04, 2020 10:23 pm

Are chartered planes (Tour companies or something) confined to just use parkings or are they allowed to use the jetways like regularly scheduled flights?

Sometimes yes and sometimes no.

AT CATIIevery5yrs said, it depends. I know at SeaTac the bus gates are cheaper, so if they might just choose to operate from bus gates for cost reasons.

Although, if you're worried about cost in the Seattle area, I could also see people airlines using Boeing Field.

Tour companies use jet bridges all the time, especially the ones that charter airplanes going to the average CUN, PVR, or HUX
Instead of typing in "mods", consider using the report function.
Love how every "travel blogger" says they will never fly AA/Ethihad again and then says it again and again on subsequent flights.

The issues are
1) FBO cost vs terminal
2) Availability of TSA at the FBO if required
3) Need for CBP clearance

Generally a scheduled flight would not be bumped to a hard stand for a charter, although there are exceptions. OTOH, in most cases the terminal would not be full and a jetway would be used.

Most European airports operate common user gates including those with jetways such as Gatwick , Barcelona , Palma and Manchester and yes inclusive tour and charter operators routinely use jetways .

Long haul remote arrivals and buses are also used even by BA at Heathrow, so no hard fast rules this side of the ocean

gate ownership/rentals are more common in the US than anywhere else.

Add privacy vs convenience to the list. Whereby passengers on a cruise charter, especially of the older generations, may appreciate a jetway, your average NFL team will probably put up with the minor convenience of having to step up to their plane from the apron over walking through the terminal to their gate...

Why not? Avianca when charterring Wamos to fly on their behalf use jetways.

Also add where the airplane is coming from and going to. If the plane turns from or to a revenue flight (at the terminal), that can change the calculus.
