Lufthansa (Eurowings) Announces Frankfurt to Calgary

Wed Feb 26, 2020 2:34 pm

Begins June 1, 2020, on the A330-200 “in cooperation with Eurowings”

4x weekly.

Pretty huge Canadian expansion from LH this year with adding FRA-YOW in May.

LH’s FRA-YYC will also go against Condor.

Could this be a reaction to LO buying Condor? I mean they are going after this market with Eurowings.

If we factor in all flights from Canada to LH Group hubs, I suppose no one else comes close? Lufthansa has a pretty firm grip on Canada.

I was not even aware of the fact that Lufthansa had the 330-200 in their fleet. Could it be a Brussels / Eurowings aircraft?

You sure it's on an A332? Unless they are sourcing it from somewhere else they don't have any in the LH mainline fleet.

Updated, it states “in cooperation with Eurowings” in the PR.

So these flights will be operated by Eurowings.

So, now there's 1x Daily YYC-FRA on AC with B77W/B789, 4x Weekly EW A332, and 3x Weekly DE B763? Wow that's a pretty busy route now!

Didn't Condor receive feed from Lufthansa in the past? I suppose that's no longer the case now?

They still do. Without the LH connections, I doubt routes like their new YEG-FRA would be viable.

- flights will be operated by EW with LH code on it
- cooperation with DE will be terminated when the agreement expires (don't know when this will be...)

March 2021, so I heard. I reckon interlining will still be possible, but not at LH internal rates.

Definitely reactionary to LOT buying Condor. Could Condor feed this on its own?

Interesting. I wonder if LO will expand their FRA presence to more than just WAW in the coming years to interline with DE more?

I was in Calgary this summer and the amount of German tourists there was crazy. Off to the Rockies and either back to Calgary or on to Vancouver and back to Germany.

Agreed, this is for sure LH spitting in DE's eye. And I doubt it, I'll wager DE drops YYC what with AC also on the route, I don't see how they could compete against AC/LH especially given the JV. We're hoping here in PHX that DE stands its ground when LH/EW also come here from FRA.

Lufthansa slowly picking off Condor’s routes. First AUS, then PHX, now YYC. Wonder if LH will return to PDX soon with this move and takeover Condor’s PDX-FRA flight.

Here's to hoping that this goes year round ... the morning departure out of FRA is more convenient for connections coming in overnight, rather than wait 6+ hours at FRA to hop on the AC flight.

Isn't this actually a Eurowings flight, and not only "operated by", and Lufthansa just codeshares?

Eurowings also starting ANC this upcoming summer, which has been a DE route for years. They also fly FRA-WDH and FRA-LAS, which compete directly with DE. Both DE and LH are also launching MUC-SEA this summer. I'd say LH is definitely going after DE.

It isn’t reactionary to LOT buying Condor. They have started going head to head on the same long haul routes before LOT got involved already. They are just out to wipe Condor out looks like.

It's a very strange "construct" indeed: EW is actually operating the flight with aircraft, crew and flight number, but despite the fact LH "only" has a codeshare on it, they actually do the whole marketing and sale of those flights.

Starting last year they really go head to head on DE longhaul routes with above mentioned construct. Besides the already mentioned destinations in North America and Africa, they have also implemented flights to the Carribean (PUJ, LRM, SNU, BGI) and also MRU - all from FRA and routes currently flown by DE as well.

Talking about hard-product and comparison to DE: well, with the 332 you get 2-4-2 whereas DE's 76W obviously have 2-3-2 seating. I learned that EW's 332 get a new interior and I guess a Leisure Business class as well as Premium Eco.

Apparently they're installing the current LH Long Haul C on A332s.

Arent Eurowings A332s all operated by SunExpress Deutschland and the A333s by Brussels Airlines? So really this would be a SunExpress wet-lease to LH?

Good, hope everyone is spending lots of money! I suggest this place as the most efficient means to separate one from theirs:

Condor won't be too happy at Eurowings stepping in its turf, with new services competing against Condor in Anchorage and Calgary.

Condor is known for having some unique seasonal flights to places like Fairbanks and Whitehorse. They will certainly not want anyone touching that!

PS: I thought Eurowings was mostly DUS and other airports but very limited in FRA?

Don’t forget about Eurowing’s upcoming FRA-ANC and Lufthansa’s MUC-SEA flights.
