A330 vs A330NEO wing area question/typo?

Tue Apr 07, 2020 9:21 pm

According to Airbus, the A330-200/300 wing area is 3892 square feet with a span of 198'. The A330NEO wing area is given as 5010 square feet with a span of 210'.

Now, something seems off here. The 6' per wing span extension is at the tip where the chord is already pretty small, so there is no way you can get an extra 1118 square feet of wing area from those winglets.

For example, The 747-400 wing added 16' of span -with a wider chord to boot- and still only gained 150 square feet of wing area.

The tip extensions on the NEO might increase wing area to just over 4000 sq ft at best.

Also consider that a 5010 sq ft wing area for an aircraft with a max t.o.w. of 551,000 lbs results in a wing loading of 110 lbs per sq ft. That is far lower than any current jet aircraft. It just doesn't add up. With a wing area that low the A330 NEO should be able to do 6000' takeoff runs at max t.o.w. and cruise at FL470.

Only other possibility is that the chord of the NEO wing is larger than that of the standard A330, but there is no evidence to suggest that is the case.

Any thoughts?

My thoughts are that Airbus would not have published their wingspan or wing area in feet

The reference wing area should be the same.

I once read (here?) that there are different ways to determine the wing area. Maybe the two values stated in the OP were measured according to different methods?

I saw this somewhere before about a month ago. No chord extension, so with the same measurement approach, it should be pretty similar. Something in that reference is off. OP, what's the source doc for it?

WIKI quoting EASA Type Certificate Data sheet (I couldn't find it in there, but didn't look very hard either)

Section 5-9-0 in the A330 ACAP document has the information. Wing area (without the wingtip device) for all models is 306m2. Wingtip device area is 11m2 for the -200/300 and 22m2 for the -800/900.

Nice, those figures make a lot more sense- thanks!
