Why So Slow?

Thu May 07, 2020 4:52 am

So it's my understanding from what I've seen and read that the Yak-42's landing speed is somewhere between 90-110kts. Now to be fair this information was provided in a comment section of a youtube video that I remember watching a few months ago but I can't remember what specific video it was. When I watched some recent videos of the Yak-42 landing, it appears that it's landing slower than some more modern airliners like 738s or a320s. I know I can't really compare the aircraft to anything else since it's unique to its class, specifically being a trijet with a MTOW of 125k lbs. Supposedly it doesn't even have thrust reversers because of this. Is it true that the Yak has a really abnormal landing speed? What's the reason to pinpoint for which helps the yak land at such slow speeds?

Are you sure you aren't thinking about the Yak-40? Because that one has a straight wing which will always have the ability to fly slower than a swept one.

The Yak-42 is designed to fly from short, rough airfields in the rural parts of the USSR, while still being able to cruise at jet speeds. Note how it also has 4-wheel main gear bogeys and built-in airstairs.

Slower landing speed is a GOOD thing for the market for the Yak-42.

737/A320 landings speeds in their market would be BAD things.

Also, the presence of thrust reversers is not used to calculate landing runway length allowable for an aircraft landing speed and weights.
