Impact of NB on NATs

Tue May 12, 2020 12:43 pm

The question might be going beyond NATs and NB, but I'll let it stay to show what I think could become a problem.

Do you think increasing number of NB planes, significantly slower than WB, will create the need to adjust NAT rules?

I can see they're evolving daily, but since NB and WB nowadays have larger speed difference than ever (if you compare 787 to 737, or 350 to 320, it's more or less 0.07Ma, 100nm over whole track), it could become a real challenge soon.

I can see vertical allocation (for example) for slower/faster planes, but shall we see such solutions?

Is it a problem over continent as well? I think ATC quite often faces two crafts at the same speed with high speed delta, right?

Gander and Shanwick handled Varying Mach numbers for decades when spacing was 2,000’ and 60nm lateral, 10 minutes longitudinal. With 30/30 and RVSM, not a big problem, if at all a problem. Typically in the day, speeds varied from .77-ish (military and corporate planes) to .83-.85 (DC-10/747) with 767 at .80-ish.
