HAL 3 - interesting routing today

Tue May 12, 2020 6:51 pm

I was tracking HAL 3 today (0512) and upon leaving LAX the flight went north along the California coast before turning west to HNL just south of San Jose.

Not the most important thing going on today but I thought I would point it out.

Routing probably due to prevailing winds. "Pressure pattern" flying term used in old days.

A combination of winds and ETOPS requirements are likely the most common cause for this routing.

Presure pattern flight ops is not likely as stated as it used a fairly random routing formula although the resultants winds would still be applicable and applies as such.

One thing that many people do not realize is that SFO is over 100 nm closer to HNL than LAX.

Not saying that was part of the routing decision, just the way distances work out over long distances.
Not all who wander are lost.

Correct. Very typical to see SFO and OGG as ETP alternates for a LAX to HNL flight. Probably the same for a lot of LAX to HNL flights on that day and time period.
