Redeye on a Delta 767-400 (LAX-JFK) & AA A321

Tue Jun 30, 2020 6:20 pm

I was going home for a few days, because I had a wedding to attend. I was originally supposed to fly on a redeye from PHX-JFK. There were thunderstorms in NY, so my flight ended up being delayed. I got an email from DL, that gave me the option to switch to an earlier flight. I decided to change my flight, to one leaving earlier in the evening. I would also get to fly on a 767-400, which I had only flown on once previously. I got to the airport around 5pm. I dropped my bag, and headed up to the gate. The airport was not very busy. There was only one other flight to Salt Lake City, that had been delayed from earlier in the day.

As everyone was boarding, the sky started to get darker. It looked like a dust storm was developing. The winds were picking up, and all departures were stopped. The captain made an announcement about the situation. He said, that we would be remaining at the gate, until he had more information. About 10 minutes later, the weather started to deteriorate at the airport. After a few go arounds, all arrivals were put into holds. As the weather got worse, we just sat at the gate. The captain made a few announcements, letting us know what was going on. At 7:20pm, the captain said that we were going to quickly pushback. There had been a break in the weather, and we were going to try to depart.

As we started to taxi, a thunderstorm moved over the airport and once again all departures were stopped. We came to a stop, and ended up sitting for another 40 minutes before we were able to depart.

Finally at 8:15pm, over 2 hours after boarding we took off from runway 25R

There were storms directly to the west of the airport. We took off and as soon as we were in the air, we immediately made a right turn to the north. It was a turbulent climb out of PHX, as we flew around the weather. We climbed up to flight level 280, and it smoothed out 30 minutes into the flight. The flight attendant in first class, came around with drinks and a snack basket.

We started our descent 25 minutes before landing, we landed on 25L at 9:20pm. We parked at gate 21, 10 minutes after we landed.

I had a little over about 45 minutes until boarding was supposed to begin. Shortly after deplaning, I got a notification that the flight would be delayed 20 minutes. The plane had taken off late from JFK.

After a few days at home, it was time for me to fly back. For the flight back I was flying AA through PHL. I got to the airport at 5:00pm, for my 6:15pm flight.

The weather had moved just to the east of the airport. We were departing right towards it. ATC gave us a heading to the south, around the weather. We started that turn immediately after taking off. Despite being near the weather, it was a smooth climb up to 15,000ft. A few minutes later, we descended down to 12,000ft. The flight attendants came through with drinks and Biscoff cookies.

After takeoff, we climbed up to 34,000ft where we stayed for the entire flight. Once we reached our cruising altitude, the flight attendants handed out pretzels. They then started to come through with drinks. About 45 minutes into the flight, someone in the row ahead of us, on the other side of the plane rang their call button. A flight attendant came. She then went towards the back of the plane. Right after this the lights were turned on, an announcement was made that there was a medical emergency. Any one that was a doctor or medical professional was asked to ring their call button. The flight attendants came back with oxygen. The girl near us was having problems breathing. A few passengers and the flight attendants talked to her, and figured out the situation. Eventually things settled down. It was not that serious, because we did not divert. A little while later, a flight attendant came back. She asked the girl some questions, because she had some paperwork to fill out. Later on in the flight, the same thing happened again. This time the girl kept the oxygen on. The flight attendants came around often to check on her, throughout the flight.

With everything going on near me, the flight passed by really quickly. We descended into PHX from the northeast, on the EAGUL6 arrival. We landed to the west, on runway 26 at 10:19pm

The following weekend, I went on vacation with my family. The flight attendant that was at the front of the plane during deplaning, was also working my flight from PHX to CLT, 5 days later. After deplaning, I headed down to get my bag. It ended up taking 45 minutes for the bags to start coming out.
