Why would WN respond by opening a new station? Most of what AA announced are resumptions of previously existing service.
I think WN just sees an opportunity. Frontier seems to have abandoned their MIA focus city for now and AA was a dumpster fire even before the pandemic, so now is their best opportunity to start MIA.
