This was already announced last week and isn't a response to WN.

Love when journalists at major publications can’t do a basic google search. “No competition on the route” between CMH-CUN? Oh, ok. Just DL, WN, and Vacation Express. All weekends as well. C’mon reporters...

Why would WN respond by opening a new station? Most of what AA announced are resumptions of previously existing service.
I think WN just sees an opportunity. Frontier seems to have abandoned their MIA focus city for now and AA was a dumpster fire even before the pandemic, so now is their best opportunity to start MIA.

Frontier has not abandoned anything at MIA, which is a new pilot base. They have put a hold on the Central America flying, but since COVID have added Dallas, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Buffalo and Providence, and boosted frequency on others. They've been shuffling around schedules last minute in reaction to demand, as all airlines, yes.
