Why did Corsair operate the 747SP?
Corsair operated an ex-South African 747SP from 1994 to 2002. Did this aircraft have too much range for them? Did it have First Class on the upper deck?

Can't tell you why, but yes the upper deck had their business class product.
Suspect the 343 seats the SP carried was probably more reasonable for some markets especially seasonally vs the 539/580 than its larger brother -200/300s had at the time.

In the "too much range" context, it is important to remember that range and payload are to a large degree interchangeable. Having an aircraft with more range than you will use means you can carry more payload.

Their flights from Orly to Reunion and Mauritius would be pretty long, I imagine the 747SP would be a good choice for that route. Could the 100/200 do that non-stop?

The -200 should be able to but definitely not the -100.

I remember they leased this bird to TN briefly in 2001 when I worked for NZ at AKL, I think it was the only SP I got to go inside. Never flew one. Odd sight at AKL.

Actually it was a very smart move to operate the 747SP, together with the 747-100/200 core fleet.
At some destinations and at some midweek days Corsair was unable to fill all seats in the the 747-100 or -200.
With the 747SP they could use the same flight crew and the trip costs (lower OEW) were less than using a half loaded normal 747.
Also maintenance savings were possible : the 747SP uses the 747-100 brakes and tires and the same PW JT9D engines, as installed at the 747-100/200 fleet.

Sorry to use this thread for a definition question but does the Boeing 747SP fall into the category of Classic Boeing 747? Also do the Boeing 747-300 or SUD after stretches of the 747-100 and 747-200 fall into that definition as well? Thanks in advance.
